Keep delivery-map events only as long as their purpose requires, and do not make a live-stream token a pass to all map history. Treat transient presence, vehicle locations, dispatch changes, and delivery proof as separate data classes. For reconnects, restore the current state from a snapshot and allow only bounded replay; authorize both subscription and replay on the server with a narrow, expiring grant.

What should a delivery map retain?

Retention should follow an event’s operational purpose, sensitivity, and audit value—not the fact that it passed through a realtime stream. The periods below are design starting points, not legal classifications or a universal schedule. Set actual retention with the operational, customer, contractual, and jurisdictional requirements that apply to your service.

Event class Retention approach Reconnect and access design
Editor cursor or transient presence Keep current state or a small, bounded buffer; every past movement is rarely needed. Return the current position in a snapshot. Grant only the event class and short replay range needed for collaboration.
Vehicle location Keep a short operational history; aggregate or sample older points if they remain useful. Restore the last known location and a bounded track. Authorize older-history queries separately.
Dispatch assignment or edit Maintain a durable history when needed for audit, support, or operations, apart from ephemeral map updates. Retrieve ordered or revisioned changes through an authorized history path rather than relying on a transient cursor grant.
Delivery proof Keep a durable, access-controlled record when business, contract, or applicable law requires it. Do not expose it through an ephemeral presence or cursor grant. Set its schedule for the relevant jurisdiction and contract with appropriate legal or compliance advice.

How should replay work after a reconnect?

A reconnect should restore a client to a correct current view without requiring the realtime stream to preserve every old transient event. Use a snapshot for current state, then replay only a bounded range of changes if the client has a valid, server-accepted position within the retained window. If that position has expired or the stream was reset, send a fresh snapshot instead.

  1. Authenticate the client. Establish the principal using the application’s normal authentication mechanism.
  2. Authorize the requested map and event classes. Check tenant, map, and permitted event types on the server; do not treat a browser-supplied map ID or scope list as proof of access.
  3. Return a current snapshot. Include the state needed to render the map, such as current presence or last known location, rather than replaying an unbounded trail.
  4. Resume only within the replay budget. Accept a cursor or revision only if it is valid for the authorized stream and falls within the permitted replay window.
  5. Fall back cleanly. If the cursor is expired, invalid, or no longer available, provide a new snapshot and establish a fresh stream position.
  6. Process duplicates safely. Make event handlers idempotent so receiving an event again does not apply the same state change twice.

Keep stable event identifiers for deduplication separate from stream positions or revisions used for resumption. A replay identifier is not necessarily a sequence number. Salesforce documents that its Pub/Sub API Replay IDs are opaque, may not be contiguous, and must not be calculated from another ID; it also notes that IDs may not be unique during certain maintenance activity and recommends event IDs for uniquely identifying platform events. Those details describe Salesforce’s platform, but they illustrate why clients should not increment opaque cursors or infer ordering from their numeric appearance.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How long should the replay window be?

Choose a bounded window based on the value of reconnecting clients being able to recover recent changes, the event rate and size, fan-out, storage and replay-read costs, network egress, and the time required to return a client to live state. Measure reconnect frequency, replay bytes, and snapshot recovery time under your own workload. A bounded window and snapshot are design choices, not a guarantee that a particular system will avoid overload.

Route older history through a separate, explicitly authorized query path. If it serves investigation or analysis rather than immediate map recovery, it can use different access controls and a lower-priority workload path so historical reads do not compete without limit with live delivery.

For scale, practitioner SyltharWave2946’s 2026 planning arithmetic estimates about 648 MB before overhead for 2,000 editors each generating one 180-byte event every two seconds over one hour. This is arithmetic for that stated scenario, not a measured production result or a general benchmark. Include indexes, replication, compression, and event encoding when estimating actual retained storage.

What should a replay token authorize?

Make a replay grant narrow enough that possession does not imply access to every map or every kind of data. As an application design, it can identify the authenticated subject, tenant or map, permitted event classes, expiry, and maximum replay age. These fields are a recommended design shape, not a standardized claim set.

  • Validate the audience. RFC 8725 requires audience validation in the described case where a JWT issuer serves multiple recipients. A token intended for another recipient should not authorize this map service.
  • Enforce application scope at the server. Check the principal, tenant, map, event class, and requested replay time before fetching or delivering events. Recheck authorization for both subscription and replay requests.
  • Limit token lifetime and exposure. Use an expiry appropriate to the task and avoid putting bearer credentials in client-visible URLs when the transport offers a safer authenticated header.
  • Consider proof of possession where token theft matters. RFC 9449 defines DPoP, which binds an OAuth token to a client key. It strengthens token-use checks, but does not replace map, tenant, event-class, or replay-age authorization.

RFC 9449 states: “The resource server MUST NOT grant access to the resource unless all checks are successful.” In practical terms, validating a token’s signature alone is not enough; the application must also complete its relevant authorization checks.

Never trust coordinates, cursor payloads, map IDs, or scope lists supplied by the browser as an authorization boundary. They are request data. The server must decide which principal may access which map and events before returning data.

Do SSE or WebRTC set the retention policy?

No. A transport carries or exchanges data; it does not decide how long the application retains that data or who may replay it. The W3C WebRTC specification defines browser communication APIs, not a delivery-map retention schedule. A Wanderer Team example dated 2025-06-21 documents SSE backfill and webhooks for its map-events API, but that vendor-specific example is not a general retention or security standard.

Transport details can affect how credentials are supplied. For example, native EventSource may lead an implementation to use a query parameter, while putting a bearer secret in a client-visible URL creates exposure risk. Prefer a safer authenticated-header approach where supported; if a transport constraint requires another pattern, design around the exposure rather than treating the URL as private.

How to evaluate the policy before launch

  • Can a reconnect restore the current map without replaying every intermediate cursor or location event?
  • Are dispatch history and delivery-proof records stored and authorized separately from ephemeral stream state?
  • Does the server reject a request for the wrong tenant, map, event class, audience, or replay age before reading events?
  • Can expired or reset cursors recover through a fresh snapshot, and can duplicate delivery be handled safely?
  • Have storage, replay bytes, reconnect rates, and recovery time been measured against the expected event rate and fan-out?
  • Can operators observe expiry and deletion behavior, and can older-history access be audited independently?

Salesforce’s Pub/Sub API provides a platform-specific retention example: Salesforce says platform events and change-data-capture events are retained for 72 hours, may sometimes remain longer, and are not guaranteed to be available after 72 hours. That is Salesforce behavior, not a recommended duration or general standard for delivery-map systems.
