Managing a real-time database on raw flash takes more than a fast device driver. The database kernel and flash-management stack must account for transaction deadlines, recovery, wear, bad blocks, error correction and garbage collection; the device-specific driver is one bounded part of that larger system. A simple driver interface can make hardware adaptation more manageable, but it does not make the complete storage system simple or guarantee hard deadlines.
How the storage stack divides the work
A conventional persistent-flash stack can include the hardware, a bus driver, a low-level protocol driver, a flash translation layer (FTL) and, commonly, a file system. A 2025 Embedded.com search-result description presents this layered framing and says the device driver implements the flash protocol, exposing functions the FTL uses to control the raw device and move data. That page’s specific claims are available here only through its search-result description, so treat the framing as an account of that article rather than a universal architecture prescription.
In practice, the work is divided across layers: the driver handles device communication, while higher layers must make data placement, transaction behavior and recovery work together. A straightforward interface at the bottom can shield the database and FTL from some device-specific details; it cannot remove their responsibilities.
- Device and bus interface: Carries commands and data over the selected device interface.
- Low-level protocol driver: Implements that device’s protocol and offers the control and data-transfer functions used by the FTL.
- Flash translation and management: Maps logical storage operations onto physical flash and manages media constraints. With raw NAND, host-side work includes wear leveling, bad-block management and error-correction coding; garbage collection and these management operations can affect latency.
- Database and transaction layer: Schedules work and defines update, commit and recovery behavior in light of storage timing.
These are responsibilities, not necessarily separate software packages: an implementation may combine or rearrange components. The important point is that a device driver does not, by itself, provide the complete media-management or database-timing policy.

What changes with raw versus managed NAND?
Raw NAND gives the host more direct control over flash behavior, but also leaves more integration and management work to the host system. Managed NAND puts an internal controller between the host and the underlying flash, abstracting much of that work. The trade-off described in McObject’s 2025 white paper on real-time database management on NAND is greater host control with raw NAND versus reduced host workload, but less control over flash management, with managed storage.
| Approach | Host’s role | Trade-off for real-time design |
|---|---|---|
| Raw NAND | Integrate an FTL or dedicated NAND controller and account for media-management responsibilities such as wear leveling, bad blocks and error correction. | More direct control, alongside more integration work and latency-affecting management operations. |
| Managed NAND, such as eMMC, UFS or NVMe SSDs | Use a device that performs flash management internally rather than exposing raw NAND management directly to the host. | Less host-side work, with less control over the internal flash-management behavior. |
“Managed” does not mean that storage timing can be ignored: it means the device handles more of the media management internally. The sources do not specify a target flash part, controller, capacity, interface, error-correction requirement or workload, so they do not support a device recommendation or a universal choice between raw and managed NAND.

What does the flash driver need to do?
The driver is device-specific glue between the host’s higher-level storage software and the flash device’s protocol. In the layered description surfaced by Embedded.com, the driver implements the protocol and exposes functions to let the FTL control the device and move data. That is a comparatively bounded task once the surrounding stack and its interface are defined—not a claim that every driver is trivial or that protocol support alone makes storage predictable.
The interface itself depends on the device. The Embedded.com search-result description lists serial SPI, QSPI and OSPI as well as parallel interfaces; it does not establish one as best for every real-time database. Selection and implementation depend on the actual device and system requirements, none of which are specified here.

- Implement the selected device’s protocol and expose the operations expected by the FTL.
- Ensure that the FTL can use those operations to control the device and transfer data.
- Keep the driver boundary aligned with the upper layer’s needs; do not confuse that boundary with responsibility for wear management, transaction scheduling or database recovery.
The precise command set, timing bounds, error-handling behavior and interface contract are device-specific and are not established by the available sources. They must be determined from the chosen device and system design rather than inferred from the phrase “simple driver.”
Where do transaction deadlines meet flash behavior?
A real-time database has to consider storage timing as part of transaction behavior, not just measure average throughput. Flash-management work—including garbage collection and other media operations—can add latency variability, so an average response time alone cannot establish whether transactions will meet deadlines. The McObject paper discusses scheduling approaches including Earliest Deadline First (EDF) and Rate-Monotonic Scheduling (RMS), and describes copy-on-write transaction updates as a way to avoid in-place changes and simplify rollback. These are design approaches discussed in a vendor paper, not universal requirements or proof that any particular implementation meets hard deadlines.

That distinction matters when assessing a system: transaction scheduling, update and recovery strategy, and the flash-management policy interact. A well-bounded driver is useful, but deadline behavior depends on the complete path and the workload. The cited sources provide no specific timing target, database workload or device configuration from which to claim a deadline guarantee.

A 2016 study by Yi Wang, Zhiwei Qin, Renhai Chen, Zili Shao, Qixin Wang, Shuai Li and Laurence T. Yang reports an RFTL design for NAND flash storage. In the authors’ hardware evaluation, their experimental comparison against representative FTL schemes reported a 41.51% improvement in worst-case response time and an 88.85% improvement in average response time. These are results from that study’s evaluation—not expected gains for other hardware, workloads or the system described by the Embedded.com article.

The comparison is useful because it reports both worst-case and average response results: real-time design cannot be judged on averages alone. The paper record identifies the work as published in IEEE Transactions on Multi-Scale Computing Systems, volume 2, issue 1, pages 17–29. See the PolyU Scholars Hub record for the RFTL paper for the study and its reported results.
How to evaluate an implementation
Begin with the complete storage path and the system’s timing needs, then decide which responsibilities belong in the driver, FTL, controller and database. A useful review asks:
- Which operations and timing guarantees does the database workload require?
- Who performs flash translation and media management, including handling bad blocks and error correction?
- How do transaction scheduling, updates and recovery behave when storage work takes longer than usual?
- Are latency claims based on worst-case behavior as well as averages, and are they measured on the intended hardware and workload?
- Does the chosen interface and protocol match the selected device, rather than an assumed universal driver design?
McObject’s embedded database white-paper page lists its NAND paper and references eXtremeDB/rt; that establishes topical relevance, not independent validation of a particular product’s timing behavior.
