Real-time data processing is a pipeline, not a single product: systems capture events, retain or route them, process them as they arrive or incrementally, and deliver results to applications or storage. There is no fixed, canonical set of ten technologies; six documented options illustrate the different roles involved: Apache Kafka, Apache Flink, Spark Structured Streaming, Apache Beam, Redpanda, and Amazon Kinesis Data Streams.

What real-time data processing means

A real-time pipeline handles events quickly enough to meet an application’s needs. “Real time” does not specify one universal latency threshold: a fraud alert, a live dashboard, and an overnight report can have very different requirements. Set the acceptable delay, including how the system should behave during bursts or outages, before choosing tools.

The pipeline usually has several responsibilities: capture events from sources, retain or route them, compute on the incoming data, then make the output available to a destination. Apache Kafka’s event-streaming documentation describes this connected lifecycle, including durable storage, processing, retrospective retrieval, and routing. That helps explain why a message or event platform and a stream-processing engine are often complementary rather than interchangeable.

Six technologies and the roles they play

Technology Primary role Documented distinction
Apache Kafka Event-streaming platform Captures, durably stores, processes or reacts to, and routes event streams; also provides the Kafka Streams API. (Apache Kafka documentation)
Apache Flink Distributed processing engine Supports stateful computation over bounded and unbounded streams, with event-time processing and late-data handling. (Apache Flink documentation)
Spark Structured Streaming Stream-processing engine Models a live stream as an incrementally updated table and uses Spark’s structured APIs. (Spark Structured Streaming documentation)
Apache Beam Programming model Defines batch and streaming pipelines that a runner executes on a processing system; documented runner examples include Flink, Spark, and Google Cloud Dataflow. (Apache Beam documentation)
Redpanda Event-streaming platform Stores events in topics and supports producer and consumer interaction through the Apache Kafka API. (Redpanda documentation)
Amazon Kinesis Data Streams Managed AWS streaming service Can feed downstream processing with options discussed by AWS including Lambda and managed Apache Flink. (AWS architecture whitepaper)

Apache Kafka: retain and route event streams

Kafka is suited to the event-streaming layer: it can sit between event producers and the systems that consume those events. Its Streams API also supports processing within Kafka applications. Kafka’s introduction gives examples including payment and financial transactions, fleet and shipment tracking, sensor analytics, customer interactions and orders, and event-driven architectures. These are examples of possible uses, not evidence that Kafka is the only appropriate choice for them.

Apache Flink: stateful computation with event-time support

Flink is a processing engine for computations over streams, including stateful workloads. Its event-time capabilities let a pipeline reason about when an event occurred rather than only when it arrived. That distinction matters when records are delayed or out of order. Flink documents late-data handling as well as checkpoints and savepoints; these are relevant to recovering state and managing processing, but do not by themselves establish an end-to-end delivery guarantee across every source and destination.

Spark Structured Streaming: incremental table computation

Structured Streaming expresses computations on a live stream through Spark’s structured APIs, treating incoming data as an incrementally updated table. Its documentation describes offsets and checkpointing for tracking progress and recovery. That model may be a natural fit where a team wants to express streaming computations in Spark’s structured programming approach; confirm the supported behavior and configuration in the documentation for the Spark version in use.

Apache Beam: separate the pipeline model from the runner

Beam is not itself one fixed processing service. It provides a unified model for batch and streaming pipelines, while a runner executes the pipeline on an underlying system. Beam documentation names Flink, Spark, and Google Cloud Dataflow as runner examples. This separation can offer flexibility in execution targets, but the runner remains part of the operational and capability decision: verify the runner’s support for the transforms and behaviors the application needs.

Redpanda: Kafka API-compatible event streaming

Redpanda describes an event-streaming platform organized around topics and producer/consumer access through the Apache Kafka API. API compatibility is relevant when evaluating integration with existing Kafka-oriented clients and applications. It should not be read as proof that every Kafka feature, configuration, operational behavior, or ecosystem component is identical; check compatibility for the exact clients and capabilities your pipeline depends on. Performance statements in Redpanda’s own documentation are vendor claims, not neutral cross-platform benchmark results.

Amazon Kinesis Data Streams: managed AWS ingestion

Kinesis Data Streams is a managed AWS service for streaming data. AWS’s architecture material discusses downstream processing options that include AWS Lambda and managed Apache Flink. This is a service-layer choice rather than a general-purpose programming model: check current AWS documentation for the target region when evaluating availability, supported integrations, pricing, and service limits.

How to choose for a workload

Start with the job the pipeline must do, then identify which layer you are selecting. A broker or managed stream can handle event capture and distribution; an engine computes results; a programming model defines a pipeline that a runner executes. One architecture may combine several of these.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
  • Define the timing requirement. Specify the useful response time for the application rather than treating “real time” as a universal number. Consider delayed and out-of-order events, not just newly arriving ones.
  • Choose the processing semantics. If event time and late data affect correctness, examine how the candidate engine handles them. Flink documents event-time and late-data features; compare the exact behavior required against the relevant platform documentation.
  • Plan for state and recovery. Identify what must be restored after a failure and how the source, processor, and destination coordinate progress. Flink documents checkpointing and state consistency; Spark Structured Streaming documents offsets, checkpointing, and fault-tolerance mechanisms. Assess the whole path rather than assuming a component’s recovery feature guarantees delivery end to end.
  • Check integrations and compatibility. Confirm that producers, consumers, destinations, and existing clients work with the selected platform. Redpanda documents Kafka API compatibility; Kafka describes routing streams to destination technologies.
  • Choose the operating model. Decide whether you want to operate the streaming infrastructure and processing runtime yourself, or use a managed service such as Kinesis Data Streams. With Beam, include the runner in that decision because it performs the execution.
  • Validate cost and capacity for the actual deployment. Compare the current pricing, limits, scaling behavior, and operational workload for the specific service, region, versions, and configuration. These cannot be settled by product category alone.

There is no defensible fastest-to-slowest ranking from the product descriptions above. A fair performance comparison would require the same workload, versions, hardware, configuration, and measurement method; no such independent, comparable benchmark is established here.
