For an audio file that has already been recorded, use the separate Audio transcription endpoint instead. The available official references do not document a Java-specific Realtime SDK or a verified Java sample, so the Java work is integrating a compatible transport and protocol—not copying a confirmed Java client example.
How do I transcribe live audio in Java with OpenAI?
Use the Realtime API for a live microphone or other audio source when your application needs low-latency interaction. OpenAI documents WebRTC, WebSocket, and SIP interfaces for Realtime connections. A Java backend or desktop application needs a client capable of using one of those transports and implementing the documented Realtime events. The API reference describes the protocol, but does not establish which transport is best for Java. OpenAI Realtime API reference.
Realtime audio and its optional transcript are not the same thing. The Realtime model consumes audio directly; enabling input transcription starts a separate, asynchronous speech-recognition process that produces text as guidance about the audio. That transcript is not guaranteed to match exactly what the Realtime model understood.
Choose the path that matches your audio
| Approach | Use it for | What the application handles |
|---|---|---|
| Realtime session | Audio arriving live, when low-latency interaction or updates matter. | A supported connection, audio/session events, and asynchronous server events. |
| Audio transcription endpoint | An existing recording submitted as a file. | A file upload in a supported format and the endpoint’s current model options. |
The Realtime reference lists WebRTC, WebSocket, and SIP, but the available documentation does not provide Java-specific comparisons among them. Select a transport based on your runtime, network environment, and surrounding client architecture, then verify that your implementation can satisfy the current protocol.

How can I stream microphone audio to OpenAI and receive transcript events?
Think of the Java application as four cooperating parts: audio capture, a Realtime connection, event handling, and the user interface or downstream processing. The exact APIs for microphone capture and connection setup depend on the Java platform and transport you choose; the steps below describe the integration responsibilities rather than a tested Java library.
- Establish a Realtime connection. Choose a supported transport—WebRTC, WebSocket, or SIP—and configure the session using the current Realtime API reference.
- Capture and send audio. Read audio from the microphone or another live source, encode it as required by the selected flow, and send the documented session and audio events. Confirm the format and event requirements in the current reference rather than assuming an encoding.
- Enable input transcription if the application needs text. Configure the session’s optional input-transcription process. It is separate from the model’s direct audio understanding.
- Parse server events by type and identifier. Handle transcription events and response events as they arrive. In particular, do not assume that the transcript-completed event always comes before or after response events; associate related events using their IDs. The input-audio transcription completed event reference documents the completion event.
- Update the interface according to the events your flow supports. Treat an in-progress transcript and a completed transcript as distinct states only where the selected flow and event protocol provide those states. Do not present a transcript as a guaranteed verbatim record of what the Realtime model perceived.
- Plan for interrupted connections and failures. Define how the application reports connection and transcription errors, handles reconnects, and avoids silently losing or duplicating audio. Check the relevant current event and session documentation for the details of the flow you implement.
- Protect credentials. Keep long-lived API credentials out of browser or other untrusted client code. Choose a credential and connection design appropriate to the client architecture and follow OpenAI’s current security guidance.
No Java library, Maven or Gradle coordinate, or tested Java code sample is established by the cited API references. OpenAI’s developer quickstart surfaced Java as an API language choice, but it is not evidence of a Java Realtime SDK or Realtime implementation example. The Java connection code therefore needs independent verification against the current API protocol.

When should I use the Audio transcription endpoint instead?
For prerecorded audio, use POST /v1/audio/transcriptions rather than opening a live Realtime session. The Audio API reference lists FLAC, MP3, MP4, MPEG, MPGA, M4A, OGG, WAV, and WebM as accepted formats, along with Whisper and GPT-4o transcription variants. It also states that streaming is not supported for whisper-1. Model availability and endpoint behavior can change, so check the current Audio API reference before choosing a model or designing a streaming workflow.
The practical distinction is whether audio is already a file or is being captured now. File transcription is a direct upload-and-result path; Realtime adds a persistent live connection and event handling. A file format accepted by the transcription endpoint does not, by itself, establish that the same format or encoding is suitable for a Realtime session.

How should I choose microphone noise reduction?
The Realtime API offers near-field and far-field noise-reduction settings for different capture situations. Near-field is intended for close-talking headphones; far-field is intended for laptop microphones or conference-room audio. Choose according to the speaker’s distance and microphone environment, and verify the current session configuration in the Realtime reference.
These options do not establish a quantified accuracy improvement, nor do they require an external microphone. They describe audio-processing choices for different microphone situations, not a hardware purchase recommendation.

What should Java developers verify before shipping?
- That the chosen Java networking or media stack can establish the selected supported transport and follow the Realtime event protocol.
- That audio capture, encoding, and session configuration match the current documentation for the specific Realtime flow.
- That event handling tolerates variable ordering and correlates events by their identifiers rather than relying on a fixed sequence.
- That the interface labels transcription appropriately and does not imply that asynchronous text is a guaranteed verbatim representation of the model’s audio understanding.
- That reconnect, error, credential, and audio-loss behavior are explicit and tested in the target environment.
- That uploaded-file format and model choices are checked against the current transcription endpoint reference when using
POST /v1/audio/transcriptions.
The cited documentation supports the API-level distinction and event behavior, but does not supply a Java Realtime client recommendation. No Java sample was compiled and no transcription test was run for this article.
