Publicly documented military AI today ranges from intelligence processing and sensor analysis to planning software and counter-drone systems. Some of it is in use, according to the military or alliance that operates it. Some of it is a trial, a contract-funded demonstration, or a production milestone for hardware whose AI role is not described. This guide names the cases that have a dated public source and labels how far each has actually progressed.
No single public source confirms a total of 21 military AI deployments, so this guide does not use that number. The inclusion rule below decides which cases appear.
How to read a status label
Military and alliance sources use words such as “deployed,” “fielded,” “tested” and “demonstrated” loosely. The labels below are used throughout this guide, and each one follows the wording of the source it describes.
- Trial or exercise: run during a scheduled event with participants. It shows a capability worked in that setting, not that it is routinely used.
- Demonstration: shown to work for a customer, often under a contract with milestones. A demonstration is not a delivery.
- Fielding: delivered to units or installations, as stated by the responsible office.
- Production: the program has moved into manufacturing, and units are kept for operational use.
- Operational use: the operator or an official account says the system has been used in real missions. Check the date and the speaker of that statement.
“Military AI” covers different jobs
The term is an umbrella. The cases in this guide fall into five different jobs, and a system that works in one job is not evidence for another.

- Intelligence processing: sorting and analysing large volumes of collected data.
- Sensor analysis: detecting and locating objects from cameras and other sensors.
- Situational awareness and planning: combining data from several sources into a shared picture for commanders and planners.
- Uncrewed systems: aircraft, vessels or ground vehicles operated without a crew on board. Being uncrewed does not make a system AI-enabled.
- Interception: defeating hostile drones, including with kinetic interceptors.
Separate the AI from the platform and from ordinary automation
News coverage often merges three layers. Keep them apart when you read a claim.
- The platform: the aircraft, interceptor, ground station or software suite that carries out the task.
- The AI component: the part a source describes as learning, classifying, recognising, fusing data or recommending. Some sources name it; many do not.
- Conventional automation: scripted or rule-based functions that do not learn from data. A system can be automated without being AI.
Public accounts of uncrewed systems do not always name an AI component, so look for one before treating a system as AI-enabled.
The inclusion rule
A case appears in this guide only if it meets all five tests:

- The source identifies an AI-enabled element, not just a platform or a network.
- Its stage is recorded with the labels above, and trials and demonstrations are listed as such.
Announced trials, contract awards and prototypes that fail any test are left out. Adding them would lengthen the list without verifying it.

Intelligence processing and targeting support
Gospel (Habsora)
The Israel Defense Forces’ statement of 18 June 2024, “The IDF’s Use of Data Technologies in Intelligence Processing,” says Gospel, known as Habsora, was first used operationally in 2021. This is the IDF’s own account of its tools, which it presents as data technologies supporting intelligence processing.
The Associated Press reported on 18 February 2025, drawing on interviews and internal documents, that AI-supported intelligence processing and targeting were in use. AP also reported on commercial cloud and AI services supplied to the Israeli military, and framed the issue as the technology’s role in decisions about who lives and who dies. Keep the two accounts separate. The IDF describes its own systems; AP’s account rests on the sources it cites, and the IDF’s statement does not settle the questions AP raised.
Lavender
The IDF’s statement covers Lavender alongside Gospel as a data technology that received media attention. Public sources do not establish a verified operational description of Lavender beyond the IDF’s account and the press coverage that followed. Treat detailed claims about how it was used as contested unless they are tied to a named, primary source.

AUKUS RAAIT sensing trials
A U.S. Department of Defense report on AUKUS Pillar II milestones (2024) describes autonomous and AI-enabled sensing systems deployed during RAAIT trials in March 2024. Personnel from Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States took part. One example was a Tactical Assault Kit plug-in supporting a UK RedKite UAV in detecting opposing-force locations. A second UAV supplied imagery for confirmation.

Because the report describes a trial, this is an exercised capability, not evidence of routine fielding by any of the three militaries. The report does not describe any automated action, so the case shows AI-enabled sensing support, not autonomous targeting.
Planning, situational awareness and industry demonstrations
Maven Smart System NATO
NATO reported in July 2026 that Maven Smart System NATO (MSS NATO) is already used by Allied Command Operations. NATO says the platform brings together data from multiple sources to improve situational awareness, targeting and operational planning. Targeting appears in NATO’s own list of uses, but the announcement does not describe the system selecting targets on its own.
NATO DIANA cohort: a demonstration, not a deployment
On 13 July 2026 NATO announced that 10 companies had been selected through DIANA to integrate and demonstrate tools in NATO’s cloud-based environment, with demonstration work scheduled to culminate by December 2026. Each selected company receives EUR 100,000 in contractual funding for integration and demonstration. That figure is a funding term. It is not a price for a system and does not measure what any tool can do.
Keep this group separate from MSS NATO. The announcement describes these tools as still being integrated and demonstrated, not as operational.

NATO Task Force X: from experiment toward deployment
NATO Allied Command Transformation says Task Force X began in the Baltic in January 2025 to bring commercially available uncrewed systems into operational environments. Its account reports ISR delivery in the first iteration, and says participating nations moved into a second phase involving procurement and deployment in the Baltic Sea.
| Area | Stage as described | What the account establishes | AI element |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baltic Sea | Second phase involving procurement and deployment, after a first iteration | ISR delivery in the first iteration | Not stated |
| North Sea, Arctic and Central Mediterranean | Trials, exploration or testing, with differing maturity | Activities named; each area’s stage is not separately stated | Not stated |
Bart Hollants, Innovation Broker at Allied Command Transformation, said: “Proving that industry is able to deliver at speed and scale is only the first step of the Task Force X model. Next, we moved to direct deployment of uncrewed capabilities into real-world conditions, across the European area of responsibility.” That is his description of Task Force X’s transition. It does not establish that every NATO uncrewed program is deployed.
Programs that have moved into production or fielding
U.S. Army TITAN
The U.S. Army’s announcement of 1 September 2026, “Army Announces Move to Production for TITAN,” says the program has moved to production and that nine prototype units were retained for operational use. That supports describing those units as available for operational use. It does not say how often they have been used in specific operations, and it does not provide measured performance.

Available sources do not establish TITAN’s mission or the AI functions it performs, so its AI role should be treated as unverified.

Marine Corps Installation-Counter sUAS, Anvil and Lattice
The Marine Corps Portfolio Acquisition Executive reports that its Installation-Counter small Unmanned Aircraft System capability has been fielded to five installations. The office describes Anvil as a kinetic defeat drone interceptor, controlled through Anduril’s Lattice interface.
The office’s release is titled “PM GBAD successfully demonstrates kinetic interceptor capability,” and its fielding statement is the claim that describes an installed capability. Both are the office’s own labels, and the fielding claim is an official statement about a counter-UAS capability. It does not establish that every component of that capability uses AI.
Governance: what NATO’s principles require and what they leave open
NATO’s summary of its Autonomy Implementation Plan (13 October 2022) lists six Principles of Responsible Use for AI in Defence:
- Lawfulness
- Responsibility and Accountability
- Explainability and Traceability
- Reliability
- Governability
- Bias Mitigation
NATO says these principles apply to AI-enabled autonomous systems and that international humanitarian law continues to apply fully to all weapons systems, including potential lethal autonomous weapons. These are NATO’s principles. They are not a description of the rules every member state or other military follows.
The NATO Parliamentary Assembly’s report of 24 November 2024 identifies challenges in procurement, interoperability, and ethical and legal governance. It also notes that many AI applications are dual-use and that innovation is often driven outside the military sector. That is one reason a named product or contract does not, by itself, show a mature operational capability.
Quick Recap
What the public record does not show
- No comparable performance measure. The public sources used for this guide do not give a broadly comparable statistic on how much faster, more accurate or more lethal military AI is than human-only processes. Any figure without a named source, test conditions and a date should be treated as unverified.
- Few human-role statements. Most cases in the table above say nothing about who approves an action. Silence is not proof that a human approves every step, and it is not proof that one does not.
- Stage is not maturity. A trial, a demonstration and a production milestone can each be accurate and still describe very different levels of use.
How to check a military AI claim
- Identify the stage word the source uses and compare it with the labels at the top of this guide.
- Identify the speaker: an official military release, an alliance account, a company announcement or journalism. Attribute the claim to that speaker.
- Look for a named AI component. If the source names only the platform, the AI role is unverified.
- Check the date. A 2024 trial and a 2026 production milestone describe different points in a program’s life.
- Look for a statement of the human role. If there is none, do not assume either autonomy or human approval.
