A read replica can take queries off a database writer and increase read capacity, but it does not automatically guarantee that every read reflects the latest write. If a write goes to the writer and the next read goes to a replica that has not caught up, that read can return an older state. The right fix depends on the database: route freshness-critical reads through a path with the required read-after-write guarantee, and reserve relaxed consistency for data that can tolerate delay.
Why a read replica can return old data
A read replica is a copy or replica database instance used to serve reads while a primary or writer handles writes. Spreading read traffic can improve read capacity, but the reader must receive and apply changes before it can return them. When a write and the following read go to different instances, the read can arrive first. Its result may be valid for the replica’s current state yet older than the writer’s latest state.
This is a freshness issue, not proof that the write was lost. Nor does the word “replica” identify one universal replication design. For example, Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL uses native PostgreSQL replication; Aurora same-Region readers share an underlying data volume but can still experience reader-cache lag; Aurora Global Database has distinct cross-Region replication behavior. Topology, workload, network conditions, and consistency settings all affect what a reader sees.
Eventual visibility and read-after-write guarantees
Under eventual visibility, a read does not wait for recent changes to arrive. It may return the old or updated value, depending on timing and replication progress. That can be suitable when a brief delay is acceptable, but it is not a read-your-writes guarantee.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
AWS documents this distinction for Aurora MySQL write forwarding. In EVENTUAL mode, a query does not wait for updated results to become available. AWS offers SESSION and GLOBAL modes for stronger visibility behavior; these are Aurora-specific features, not universal database controls.
- EVENTUAL: the query does not wait for propagation, so it may observe an older value.
- SESSION: waits when needed so the session can see its own writes.
- GLOBAL: waits for committed changes from all sessions and instances to be visible as of the query’s start.
The stronger modes can add waiting and response time. AWS states in its Aurora read-consistency documentation: “As you increase the consistency level, your application spends more time waiting for changes to be propagated between DB instances.”

Choose the read path by the freshness the feature needs
Decide what the application must guarantee before choosing where a query runs. A feed or dashboard may be useful even if it briefly trails a recent update. An immediate confirmation screen, account balance, permission change, or just-created record may need to reflect the write that just occurred. Those examples are product-design illustrations; the needed guarantee depends on the consequences of showing older data.
- For a freshness-sensitive read: use the writer, or use a database-specific consistency feature that explicitly provides the required visibility. Aurora’s SESSION and GLOBAL modes are examples; verify the exact behavior and failure handling for the engine and configuration in use.
- For a read that can tolerate delay: a replica can serve it without waiting for the newest write, allowing the application to favor read capacity or response time.
- For other engines or architectures: routing based on replication position or a freshness signal may be a design option, but its correctness depends on that database’s documented semantics. Do not assume a generic “wait for replica” switch exists.
Make freshness a product requirement—such as “this session must see its own successful update”—rather than inferring it from a low average lag figure. Then verify that the chosen read path meets that requirement, including when replication is delayed or degraded.

What lag figures do—and do not—tell you
Lag metrics are product- and engine-specific. They can help identify replication health problems, but a single number is not necessarily a direct measurement of how old a particular query result is.
- RDS for PostgreSQL idle periods: AWS says an associated read replica can report lag of up to five minutes when no user transactions run on the source. In this documented context, the metric is calculated from the last committed transaction timestamp, and WAL segments switch by default every five minutes. This is a metric behavior, not a claim that every replica serves data five minutes stale. See AWS’s RDS for PostgreSQL read replica documentation.
- PostgreSQL replay timing: PostgreSQL replication metrics can reflect the time since the last transaction was replayed. That time can rise while the source is idle and fall when a WAL segment switches, so interpret it using the metric’s definition and workload context. AWS explains replica monitoring in Monitoring read replication.
- Aurora same-Region readers: AWS describes typical reader lag in the tens of milliseconds. This is a typical vendor observation, not a worst-case bound or a promise for every workload.
- Aurora Global Database: AWS describes typical physical replication lag under one second. The same AWS FAQ says logical binlog replication lag can grow depending on the change and apply rates and network delays; the typical physical figure should not be treated as a guarantee for logical replication.
The Aurora figures and topology distinctions are described in AWS’s Availability and Durability FAQ. Neither a momentary zero nor a low average lag establishes application-level read-after-write consistency.

Monitor replication health as well as lag
Use the database’s documented monitoring signals to distinguish ordinary delay from a replica that is stopped or degraded. AWS’s replication monitoring guidance covers CloudWatch ReplicaLag and replication status values. Check what the selected metric measures, whether replication is progressing, and whether the workload or network has changed.
- Investigate sustained or growing lag alongside replication status, write volume, and the reader’s ability to apply changes.
- Check network conditions and engine-specific replication factors when a replica falls behind. AWS notes that cross-Region logical lag depends on change/apply rates and network delays.
- Keep availability, durability, freshness, and lag conceptually separate. A reader can be available while behind; a lag metric alone does not establish whether a committed write is visible to a particular query.
What to expect from the consistency tradeoff
Stronger consistency can require waiting, while relaxed visibility can favor responsiveness and read scaling at the cost of showing an older state. The balance is not one universal number. A 2012 paper by Peter Bailis, Shivaram Venkataraman, Michael J. Franklin, Joseph M. Hellerstein, and Ion Stoica, “Probabilistically Bounded Staleness for Practical Partial Quorums”, analyzes latency and consistency tradeoffs in particular partial-quorum systems. Its findings are useful background, not a current-product latency bound for all read replicas.
