A read replica can take eligible read traffic off a database’s primary and add capacity for a read-heavy workload. It does not, by itself, make an inefficient query more efficient: the same excessive scanning, poor join strategy, or avoidable sorting may still consume resources on the replica. Diagnose whether the problem is the work done by one statement or the total read demand before choosing a fix.

What a read replica changes—and what it does not

A query plan describes how the database will retrieve and process data for a statement. A replica changes where some reads run and can increase the capacity available to serve them. Those are different levers: tuning targets the cost of a query; replication can distribute workload.

PostgreSQL’s planner chooses a plan for each query it receives. Its PostgreSQL 17 EXPLAIN documentation describes plans as trees of operations, including scans and, as needed, joins, sorts, and aggregations. If a plan makes a query read or process far more data than necessary, sending that query to a replica does not automatically remove that work.

Do not assume a primary and replica always produce identical plans. Engine, statistics, configuration, data, and service architecture can matter. The useful question is whether the instance serving the slow statement has a suitable plan for its data and workload—not whether a replica exists.

First determine what is actually slow

Identify the statement and its workload

Pin down the exact SQL statement, its parameter values, how often it runs, its concurrency, and which database instance serves it. A replica only helps with reads the application actually routes there; write traffic remains a separate workload. A query that is slow in isolation may also be part of a broader concurrency problem, so capture the surrounding load.

Inspect the plan on the relevant instance

Use EXPLAIN on the engine and instance relevant to the problem. It shows the planned operations without running the statement. For PostgreSQL, EXPLAIN ANALYZE executes the query and adds observed execution information, including actual row counts and timing. It does not send the query’s result rows to the client, and measurement itself can add overhead. Its timing is therefore not the same as end-to-end application latency; interpret it in the context of the environment and data shape being investigated.

Read the tree from the scans upward and compare estimated rows with actual rows when execution data is available. Look for estimates that diverge substantially, and check whether joins, sorting, and aggregation fit the query’s intended work. If your platform exposes buffer or other I/O instrumentation, consider it alongside the plan; the details and interpretation are platform-specific.

Do not treat every sequential scan as a defect

A sequential scan can be the right choice, especially for a small table or a query that needs a large share of its rows. PostgreSQL’s documentation notes that a small table can make a sequential scan sensible even when indexes exist. Whether a scan is inefficient depends on table size, selectivity, data distribution, and the work the statement needs to perform.

Check whether planner statistics reflect current data and whether predicates and joins can use existing indexes. An index is not automatically the answer: its value depends on the query and data distribution, while maintaining it adds write and storage costs and may affect other statements. Make schema or index changes only after evaluating those trade-offs against the observed workload.

Choose a remedy based on the bottleneck

Option Use it when What to evaluate
Query tuning or schema/index changes The plan shows excessive work in a particular statement. Actual versus estimated rows, query latency, write overhead, storage, and effects on other statements.
Replica-based read scaling Aggregate read demand or contention on the source is the constraint, and eligible reads can be routed to replicas. Capacity gained, application routing changes, replication lag, freshness tolerance, and operating cost.
Plan stability controls A plan regression has been demonstrated after a plan-affecting change. Whether the engine offers an appropriate control, plus its configuration, maintenance, and version constraints.
Larger instance or a different architecture The plan is reasonably efficient but constrained by CPU, memory, or I/O, or the workload is better handled elsewhere. The measured resource bottleneck and the needs of the specific workload; there is no universal threshold established here for changing instance size or moving analytics.

Replica count alone does not measure query efficiency. If the statement itself is wasteful, adding replicas may distribute the cost without eliminating it. Conversely, if individual queries are reasonably efficient but the source is overloaded by concurrent reads, routing eligible reads to replicas can address a capacity problem.

Account for freshness and plan changes

Replica lag is not plan quality

A replica introduces a freshness consideration separate from query performance. AWS describes RDS for PostgreSQL read replicas as read-only replicas using native PostgreSQL replication. Its documentation also explains that the reported lag can rise to five minutes when there are no source transactions, because the default WAL segment switch interval is five minutes. That is a documented reporting behavior, not a guarantee that every replica is actually stale by that amount.

AWS describes routing application reads to RDS replicas as a way to reduce load on the source and scale read-heavy workloads; its general comparison distinguishes this scalability role from replication used for availability or disaster recovery. Non-Aurora RDS read replicas use asynchronous replication, so decide whether the resulting freshness characteristics fit the application. Make read-after-write needs explicit before routing a read to a replica.

Aurora PostgreSQL has a different architecture: its replicas share a cluster volume, and AWS defines ReplicaLag in terms of reader page-cache lag relative to the writer. That metric and architecture should not be conflated with the RDS for PostgreSQL lag-reporting behavior above. AWS notes Aurora lag is usually much less than 100 milliseconds, but that is not a general performance promise; workload and write rates affect lag. See AWS’s Aurora PostgreSQL replication documentation for the product-specific explanation.

Plan stability addresses a different problem

Plans can change as statistics, data, configuration, or database versions change. AWS calls a change to a less optimal plan after an environmental change a plan regression. For Aurora PostgreSQL specifically, query plan management can constrain the optimizer to a set of known plans. This is a plan-stability control, not a general property of PostgreSQL replicas or a feature that applies to every database vendor. Check the current Aurora engine and extension documentation for supported statements and configuration requirements before adopting it. See AWS Aurora PostgreSQL query plan management.

A practical decision sequence

  1. Locate the slow work. Record the statement, parameters, frequency, concurrency, and the instance serving it.
  2. Capture a representative plan. Run EXPLAIN on the relevant engine and data. Where safe, use EXPLAIN ANALYZE to compare actual rows and timing with estimates, accounting for its measurement overhead.
  3. Investigate excess work. Check scans, row estimates, joins, sorting, aggregation, statistics, and whether existing indexes suit the query. Treat sequential scans in light of table size and selectivity.
  4. Make one evidence-based change. Depending on the diagnosed cause, adjust SQL, statistics, schema or indexes, configuration, or version. Consider plan-management controls only where the engine supports them and a regression is established.
  5. Compare before and after. Recheck the plan and latency under representative data and workload. If the query is reasonably efficient but read concurrency still strains the source, test routing eligible reads to replica capacity and measure response time and lag against freshness needs.

For RDS replica behavior and scaling context, consult AWS’s RDS Read Replicas overview and AWS’s RDS for PostgreSQL read replica documentation. Product behavior depends on the database service and engine; verify the applicable documentation for your deployment.
