There is no universal deadline for reactivating a SIM card. The time depends on your country, carrier, and why service stopped: a registration suspension may be restored within days, while an expired prepaid number may have only a short recovery window. Contact your carrier as soon as possible and ask whether the number is active, suspended, disconnected, or recycled—and what exact steps and deadline apply.
What “deactivated SIM” can mean
The phrase can describe different account states, and the remedy depends on which one applies. A SIM card is the physical card; the phone number and service are controlled by the carrier.
- Suspended or blocked: Service is temporarily unavailable, for example because identity registration is incomplete. The carrier may restore it after the issue is resolved.
- Expired: A prepaid plan or validity period has ended. Some carriers allow a limited period to restore service, often with a top-up or other conditions.
- Permanently disconnected: The carrier has ended the service. The number might still be in a waiting or recycling period, but restoration is not guaranteed.
- Recycled: The number has returned to the carrier’s pool or has been assigned to someone else. The reviewed policies do not establish a right to reclaim a recycled number.
- Lost or damaged SIM: If the account is still active, a replacement SIM may let you use the existing number. Replacing the card does not reverse a terminated account or reclaim a recycled number.
Ask the carrier for the account status, not just whether the old SIM works.

How long reactivation can take
Published timelines vary by operator and by the event that starts the clock. The examples below are local policies, not a global standard or a guarantee that another carrier will follow the same schedule.

These dates are measured from different events—such as last use, cancellation, or expiry—so they cannot be compared as if they were one common countdown. Check the carrier’s current policy for your account and location.

It may be too late once the carrier’s recovery window ends and the number is returned to its pool or assigned to another subscriber. The cutoff depends on the carrier’s rules. Orange Egypt says it may resell a line after its 15-day post-deactivation window. Dialog publishes a six-month recycling interval after permanent disconnection for prepaid lines, while Telkomsel describes a 60-day recycle period after its expired period. None of those timelines determines what another carrier will do.

India’s Department of Telecommunications instructions say a deactivated or disconnected mobile number may not be allocated to another subscriber until 90 days have elapsed. That country-specific reallocation rule is not a promise that a former customer can demand restoration during those 90 days. Department of Telecommunications instructions.

What to do now
- Contact the carrier through an official channel. Use its app, support number, website, or store. Give the affected number and ask whether it is active, suspended, permanently disconnected, or recycled.
- Ask for the exact deadline and start date. Find out whether the countdown begins at plan expiry, cancellation, last use, or formal deactivation—and ask for the final recovery date for your number.
- Confirm every restoration requirement. Ask whether you need identity verification or re-KYC, a top-up or fee, a replacement SIM, or an in-person visit. For example, Jio lists payment, re-KYC, and any applicable recharge; Telekom Deutschland says the carrier performs reactivation.
- Request a replacement SIM only if the account remains active. Government instructions in India define replacement as getting a new SIM for an existing subscriber in place of a lost or non-working SIM. It is a hardware and account-servicing step, not a way to reclaim a terminated number. Department of Telecommunications instructions.
- Secure accounts if recovery is unavailable. Change the phone number on banking, messaging, email, and other important services wherever possible. Review account recovery methods and secure any account that still sends codes to the old number. Telkomsel warns that recycled numbers may later be used by another person and may be linked to banking, fintech, e-commerce, messaging, and social accounts. Telkomsel guidance on recycled numbers.
