For React screenshot testing, render a repeatable UI state, capture it, and compare the image with an approved baseline. Playwright Test offers direct screenshot assertions for pages and browser journeys; Storybook stories paired with Chromatic suit reusable component states and hosted visual review. A pixel difference is a signal to inspect—not proof of a defect.

What React screenshot testing catches

Screenshot testing, also called visual regression testing, compares rendered pixels. It can reveal changes to layout, color, size, spacing, and other visible details that a DOM or serialized markup snapshot may not detect. Markup snapshots answer a different question: whether the rendered markup changed. Neither image diffs nor markup changes alone establish whether the change is wrong; use behavioral assertions for interaction outcomes.

A typical visual test renders a page or component state, captures an image, compares it with a previously accepted reference, and presents differences for review. A change may be an unintended regression, an intentional design update, or a consequence of changed browser or operating-system rendering.

Choose a workflow: Playwright or Storybook with Chromatic

Comparison Playwright Test screenshot assertion Storybook visual test with Chromatic
Best fit Full pages, browser-rendered routes, and selected points in end-to-end journeys. Reusable component and design-system states already represented as stories.
Baseline and review Reference screenshots are managed with test snapshots. Update them with Playwright’s snapshot update option and review the changes. Chromatic hosts captures and diffs; review and accept or reject changes in its workflow.
Environment Keep browser, platform, fonts, and rendering conditions stable. Different browsers and platforms may need separate references. Cloud capture uses standardized browser/device configurations and supports configured viewport and browser variations.
Noise controls Offers pixel thresholds and capture stylesheets; the test author controls page state. Pauses several animation types, but JavaScript-driven animation still needs deliberate handling.
Infrastructure Runs in the project’s test workflow, with reference files managed alongside it. Requires a connected Chromatic project and an authenticated CI run for automated checks.

The approaches can complement each other: use stories to define reusable component states, then use Playwright for workflows that require a running application. Storybook documents reusing stories in Playwright or Cypress end-to-end tests.

Capture React UI changes with Playwright

Install and configure Playwright Test in the project before adding a visual assertion. This minimal test captures the page reached at the root route:

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('landing page visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('/');
  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot();
});

On the first run, Playwright creates the reference screenshot; subsequent runs compare against it. You can give the screenshot a name with toHaveScreenshot()‘s supported options. Playwright associates snapshots with browser and platform because rendering and fonts can differ, and its documentation notes that separate references may be needed for different browsers or platforms. See the Playwright visual comparison documentation for current setup and assertion options.

Approve an intentional change

After confirming that a UI change is intended, regenerate the reference with:

npx playwright test --update-snapshots

Review the resulting image changes in version control. Updating a baseline should record an approved appearance, not silence an unexplained diff.

Control comparison noise carefully

Playwright uses pixelmatch and supports comparison configuration, including maxDiffPixels. It also supports a capture-time custom stylesheet, which can hide known volatile content such as an iframe. Use these controls narrowly: a generous tolerance or broad stylesheet can hide a real visual regression.

Use Storybook stories with Chromatic

Stories define repeatable component states, making them useful visual test cases for a design system or component library. The official Storybook visual testing addon is @chromatic-com/storybook; Storybook describes it as a Chromatic integration that turns stories into visual tests. Initial runs establish baselines. Later runs highlight changed stories and pixels so a team can correct unintended changes or accept intentional ones.

Storybook recommends using the addon during development and running Chromatic in CI before merge; checks can appear on pull or merge requests. Chromatic documents snapshot inputs from Storybook stories, Vitest browser-mode tests, and Playwright and Cypress end-to-end tests. Its flow loads tests in a selected device and viewport, waits for rendering, captures screenshots, and diffs them against the prior baseline. Stories cover isolated states; browser tests can exercise flows and capture chosen points along a journey.

Chromatic documents pausing CSS animations and transitions, videos, and GIFs during capture. JavaScript-driven animations remain the test author’s responsibility, and captures of interaction tests wait for the Storybook play function to finish. Device pixel ratio (DPR) also matters: Chromatic’s current snapshot documentation describes Capture 9 visual snapshots at DPR 2.0 and notes that switching from DPR 1.0 to DPR 2.0 is reported as a visual change. Keep capture configuration consistent and deliberately approve expected changes. See Storybook’s visual testing documentation and Chromatic’s snapshot documentation.

Make screenshot comparisons reliable

  • Render deterministic states. Seed or mock data, wait for the relevant UI to settle, and avoid uncontrolled clocks, network responses, random values, and asynchronous transitions.
  • Keep the environment stable. For local Playwright image comparisons, use the same browser and operating-system environment to create baselines and run CI. Playwright warns that host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect screenshots.
  • Choose the capture area deliberately. Decide whether each test covers a viewport, named element, or full page, then keep that choice consistent.
  • Hide only irrelevant volatility. Freeze or hide content that is genuinely volatile and outside the test’s purpose; do not remove content whose appearance is part of the behavior under test. Playwright’s stylePath capture stylesheet is one option.
  • Handle animation by type. Chromatic pauses CSS transitions and animations and media animation, but JavaScript-driven animation needs a test-specific strategy.
  • Inspect every baseline change. Confirm design intent and review affected images rather than blindly accepting all new snapshots.
  • Use tolerances for known noise only. An overly permissive pixel threshold can conceal a meaningful regression.

Or skip the browser setup

For a one-off capture, or to fetch an image from a script without setting up a browser test runner, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL in one GET request. The example saves a WebP screenshot; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Troubleshoot common visual-test failures

  • A diff appears after no intentional UI change: Check browser, operating system, fonts, DPR, headless mode, and other rendering conditions for drift. Then inspect dynamic content and animation before changing a threshold.
  • The first run reports a missing reference: This is expected when establishing a Playwright baseline. Generate it, inspect the image, and commit the approved reference so later runs have a comparison point.
  • An approved UI update leaves tests failing: Regenerate Playwright references with npx playwright test --update-snapshots, then review and commit the image changes. For Chromatic, review the changed stories and accept only intended changes.
  • Captures vary between runs: Stabilize data and timing, wait for the relevant content, and isolate truly volatile elements. For Chromatic, account separately for JavaScript-driven animation.
  • Many pixels change after an environment or capture-setting migration: Confirm whether browser, platform, viewport, or DPR changed. A change such as DPR 1.0 to 2.0 can alter the result; keep settings aligned or deliberately review a new baseline.
  • A markup snapshot passes despite a visible styling regression: Use an image-based assertion for appearance. Markup snapshots test markup, not pixel-level rendering.
