React Compiler automatically memoizes eligible components and hooks during your build, reducing some avoidable repeated work without requiring you to add memoization wrappers everywhere. It is a stable build-time tool—not a runtime switch or a guarantee that every app will get faster. Its benefits depend on your code, workload, and rollout.

What does React Compiler do?

React Compiler analyzes React code and transforms eligible components and hooks so React can reuse values and skip some unnecessary work. The React team describes it as “a build-time tool that optimizes your React app through automatic memoization.” It analyzes data flow and mutability, allowing it to memoize at a more granular level—including conditionally—rather than relying only on manually placed wrappers and hooks. React Compiler v1.0

That is the practical meaning of “magic”: the compiler does analysis and code transformation during the build, based on the Rules of React. It does not make rendering free, optimize every possible bottleneck, or change behavior through a runtime toggle. The React team says it can work without component rewrites when code follows those rules, and its validation passes report diagnostics through the React Hooks ESLint tooling.

What the reported performance results show

In the stable-release announcement, the React team reported that the Meta Quest Store saw initial loads and cross-page navigations improve by up to 12%, while certain interactions became more than 2.5× faster. Those are results from one named deployment, not a cross-app benchmark or a forecast for your application. Actual effects depend on the app’s code patterns and workload; profile the parts of your own app that are expensive before assuming the compiler will improve them.

Should you try React Compiler?

For a team already using React, the compiler can be introduced through the build pipeline and rolled out gradually. You do not have to fix every lint diagnostic before starting: the installation guide says a component or hook with a compiler lint error is skipped while eligible code can still be optimized. React 19 is the recommended version and uses the compiler runtime APIs built into React. React 17 and 18 are supported, but need the separate react-compiler-runtime package and a compiler target matching the React major version. React Compiler version targeting

If you use Babel, put the compiler plugin first in the plugin pipeline. It needs to see original source information before other plugins transform it. For a framework-specific project, follow the current instructions for that framework rather than assuming a generic Babel configuration applies.

Choose a rollout scope

You can start with the compiler’s default behavior or control which code is compiled. The configuration reference documents annotation mode, in which only functions marked with "use memo" are selected, along with gating for gradual rollout and a panic threshold that can skip problematic components instead of failing the build. Logging and other configuration options can help teams understand what is happening as they expand coverage. React Compiler configuration reference

A selective rollout gives a team tighter control over the diagnostic surface and which code is affected, but requires configuration and annotation. Broader default compilation is simpler to begin with; lint diagnostics and staged gating help assess its behavior before widening adoption.

What should you do about useMemo, useCallback, and React.memo?

For new code, React recommends relying on compiler memoization by default and using useMemo or useCallback when you need precise control. That avoids adding manual memoization everywhere as a precaution. React Compiler incremental adoption

In an existing codebase, do not immediately remove useMemo, useCallback, or React.memo. The React team recommends leaving existing manual memoization in place or testing carefully before removing it, because removal can change the compiler’s output. Make changes incrementally and compare the behavior and performance of the affected code.

How can you verify that React Compiler is working?

  • Check React DevTools: the installation guide recommends looking for the “Memo ✨” badge on optimized components.
  • Inspect generated build output: confirm that compiler runtime and memoization logic have been inserted.
  • Read compiler lint diagnostics: they can reveal code that was skipped or that does not follow the Rules of React. A skipped component does not prevent other eligible code from being compiled.
  • Use an opt-out to diagnose a problem: the guide documents a temporary "use no memo" directive for opting a component out while investigating.

Check the common setup failures

  • React 17 or 18 runtime error: verify that react-compiler-runtime is installed and that the compiler target matches the React major version.
  • Babel output looks wrong: confirm the compiler plugin is first in the plugin pipeline so it receives the original source.
  • A component is not optimized: inspect its compiler lint diagnostics and check whether it follows the Rules of React; the compiler may skip code it cannot safely compile.
