RE ENGINE is Capcom’s in-house engine, developed around the company’s own games. Unreal Engine is Epic’s publicly available engine, with published documentation, source-code access, learning resources, and licensing terms. That makes Unreal’s access and terms easier to assess from public information; it does not make it the better engine for every project. The practical choice depends on whether your team can use the engine, its workflow and platform fit, support needs, and applicable costs. The reviewed official sources do not establish general RE ENGINE access for independent developers or provide a controlled performance comparison.

What is the difference between RE ENGINE and Unreal Engine?

They come from different development models. Capcom describes RE ENGINE as its in-house game-development engine. Epic offers Unreal Engine with public documentation, source-code access, learning materials, and published standard license terms. Capcom’s public materials describe the engine’s use in its own games, but do not establish general external licensing or comparable public terms.

The available evidence is therefore uneven: Epic documents specific Unreal tools and licensing, while Capcom emphasizes RE ENGINE’s use across its portfolio. A longer public feature list is not proof of better results, and neither vendor’s cited material provides a controlled head-to-head benchmark.

What each engine is designed and documented to do

RE ENGINE: Capcom’s in-house technology

Capcom says RE ENGINE supports multiple platforms and is used across its titles. Its examples include photorealistic Resident Evil Requiem and the anime-style Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection, so it should not be characterized as an engine only for horror games or photorealistic visuals. Capcom also says it upgrades the engine to suit individual titles. Capcom’s 2025 report describes these uses.

Capcom reported holding a hands-on game-development class with Kindai University in 2024. That demonstrates an educational activity, not general availability to independent or third-party developers. A 2016 interview offers historical context: in the early Resident Evil 7 period, executive producer Jun Takeuchi said, “Our RE ENGINE includes everything that we need to develop games for next-generation consoles and is also optimized for VR game development.” This reflects Capcom’s statement at that time, not a current independent assessment or complete feature list. Read the 2016 Capcom interview.

Capcom also says the Monster Hunter series moved from MT Framework to RE ENGINE for development of the Nintendo Switch title Monster Hunter Rise. It is an example of Capcom adapting its engine for a different series and hardware target—not evidence that outside studios can license it. Read Capcom’s Monster Hunter Rise interview.

Unreal Engine: a publicly documented toolset

Epic’s game-development overview lists Lumen for dynamic global illumination, Nanite geometry, Virtual Shadow Maps, World Partition, and One File Per Actor. It also describes source-code access and support for multiplayer and networked games, alongside onboarding, tutorials, samples, documentation, and community resources. These are features and resources Epic describes; they are not independent findings about performance, cost, or superiority over RE ENGINE. See Epic’s Unreal Engine game-development overview.

  • Access: Can the team legally and practically use the engine? Unreal is publicly offered with published terms. The Capcom sources reviewed describe RE ENGINE as in-house but do not establish general external access.
  • Project and platform fit: Compare your genre, visual goals, scope, and target hardware with documented examples and capabilities. Capcom’s examples span photorealistic and anime-style games and multiple platforms; Epic describes Unreal game-development features across platforms.
  • Workflow: Identify the rendering, world-building, collaboration, and production workflows your project requires. Epic publicly documents named tools; Capcom’s public materials reviewed here provide less feature-level detail about RE ENGINE.
  • Team readiness and support: Consider existing expertise and the training or technical support your team can actually access. Epic lists public learning resources; Capcom’s university class does not establish broadly available RE ENGINE instruction or support.
  • Cost and obligations: Assess the license category that applies to your product and organization—not just the engine’s headline reputation or whether access appears free.
  • Performance: Benchmark a representative build on your own target hardware. The official sources reviewed do not provide comparable controlled results for these engines.

Can indie developers use RE ENGINE?

The reviewed Capcom sources do not establish general RE ENGINE licensing or access for independent developers. They identify it as Capcom’s in-house engine, and the 2024 university class is not evidence of an open or commercial license. Do not assume an indie team can obtain or ship a game with RE ENGINE without confirming access directly with Capcom.

How do Unreal Engine’s published license terms work?

Epic’s licensing page, accessed in 2026, states that game developers pay a 5% royalty on qualifying lifetime gross revenue above $1 million USD in gross product revenue; revenue from the Epic Games Store is royalty-free under this royalty description. The page also lists a $1,850 USD per-seat annual fee for specified commercial users with more than $1 million USD in revenue in the prior 12 months who are not making a qualifying runtime-engine game or application for third-party end users. These figures apply under the page’s stated conditions and license categories, not universally to every Unreal user. Check Epic’s current licensing terms for the category and terms that apply to your project.

The reviewed Capcom sources do not give comparable external RE ENGINE prices or licensing terms. That gap prevents a like-for-like public cost comparison; it is not evidence that RE ENGINE is free or that access is available.

Is Unreal Engine easier to learn?

Epic publishes onboarding, tutorials, samples, and documentation, giving prospective learners a visible starting point. The reviewed official sources do not compare the engines’ learning curves, so they cannot establish that Unreal is inherently easier. Learning time depends on the team’s background, the project’s requirements, and what training and support it can access.
