RCS adds richer features to supported phone-number conversations, while SMS and MMS remain carrier-delivered messaging options. In Google Messages, the message type you can use depends on app and service support, your recipient’s setup, and—in some cases—your carrier and region. RCS is not automatically available in every chat, and it is not end-to-end encrypted in every app or conversation.
What is RCS messaging?
RCS stands for Rich Communication Services. It is an industry messaging standard intended to support more dynamic conversations than SMS and MMS. Google Messages can use RCS for compatible conversations, but the standard does not guarantee that every messaging app, carrier or recipient supports the same capabilities. Google’s RCS overview and the GSMA Universal Profile 3.0 specification describe the standard and its capabilities.
RCS vs. SMS and MMS: what changes?
| What you’re comparing | RCS | SMS and MMS |
|---|---|---|
| Features | Can support features such as read receipts and richer group messaging; available features depend on the app and conversation. | Do not provide the same RCS feature set. |
| Compatibility | Requires support from the messaging app or service and the other participant; carrier, region and device arrangements can also affect availability. | Remain carrier-delivered alternatives. |
| Delivery | Uses RCS when the conversation supports it. In Google Messages, an undelivered RCS message can be switched to SMS/MMS if fallback is available. | SMS and MMS delivery continues through the carrier. |
| End-to-end encryption | Available only in eligible app and conversation combinations; do not assume every RCS chat is end-to-end encrypted. | Not end-to-end encrypted. |
Google highlights read receipts and richer conversations among RCS capabilities. Exact behavior can differ by app and service, so RCS should be understood as a standard with support-dependent features—not a guarantee of a uniform experience. Google Messages Help.
When will an Android conversation use RCS?
In Google Messages, RCS is available only when the necessary app or service support is in place and the recipient can participate. Carrier or service arrangements and regional availability can also matter. If a chat does not support RCS, it may use SMS or MMS instead. Check the conversation’s composer or message details in your app for the current sending mode; labels and controls may vary by app version.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
What happens if an RCS message does not send?
Google Messages can let you switch an undelivered RCS message to SMS or MMS. That changes the delivery route to the carrier messaging option; it does not make the SMS/MMS message an RCS message. Google says the corresponding RCS message is deleted from the queue when you switch to carrier SMS/MMS. SMS and MMS delivery through the carrier otherwise continues as before. Google’s RCS guidance.
Are RCS messages encrypted?
Not necessarily. Google says SMS and MMS are not end-to-end encrypted, and RCS is not end-to-end encrypted if the messaging app does not support it. Some eligible Google Messages conversations can use end-to-end encryption (E2EE). Google also describes TLS protection for its RCS chats when E2EE is unavailable; TLS and end-to-end encryption are different protections. Check the encryption indicator in the specific conversation rather than assuming that RCS alone means E2EE. Google’s encryption explanation and security guidance.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
What about RCS between Android and iPhone?
Cross-platform encryption is being introduced conditionally, not universally. On May 11, 2026, Google announced a beta rollout of end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging for iPhone users on iOS 26.5 with supported carriers and Android users on the latest Google Messages. That announcement does not establish that every Android–iPhone RCS conversation is encrypted or that the feature is available to every user. Google’s May 11, 2026 announcement.
The GSMA’s Universal Profile 3.0 specification, published March 13, 2025, defines requirements and user experience for end-to-end encryption of RCS messages, files and other user-provided content. A specification describes capabilities and requirements; actual availability still depends on implementation and support in the apps, services and networks involved. GSMA Universal Profile 3.0.
