RCI Hospitality Holdings reported that a cybersecurity incident at its subsidiary, RCI Internet Services, exposed files containing personal information about independent contractors. The incident began March 19, 2026, and the company discovered it on March 23. RCI’s April SEC filing said the files included sensitive identifiers; a later notice to an affected individual also listed passport numbers as potentially involved.
What happened in the RCI Hospitality breach?
RCI Hospitality Holdings said its subsidiary, RCI Internet Services, discovered a cybersecurity incident on March 23, 2026. The company said the incident began March 19. After investigating with third-party cybersecurity firms, RCI reported a potential insecure direct object reference (IDOR) vulnerability on an internet information services (IIS) web server. The company’s report was dated April 7 and filed with the SEC on April 13. RCI Hospitality Holdings’ SEC filing
An IDOR flaw can occur when a web application does not properly check whether a user is authorized to access a particular object or file. RCI described the vulnerability as potential; the cited public materials do not include an independent technical forensic report confirming the finding.

In its May 28, 2026 notice, RCI said certain files were accessed and acquired without authorization on March 19. After reviewing the files, the company confirmed on May 13 that the notice recipient’s personal information was in the potentially affected data. The California Attorney General’s registry lists March 23 as the breach date “if known,” reflecting the discovery date rather than the reported start of unauthorized access. In the individual notice, RCI said the recipient’s potentially involved information may also have included a passport number. That recipient-specific notice does not establish that passport numbers were involved for every affected person.
RCI said it had no knowledge that the information had been publicly disseminated. The individual notice separately said there was no evidence of misuse or attempted misuse of the potentially impacted information at the time it was issued. Those are company statements at the time of the reports, not a guarantee that misuse could not occur later.

- Review accounts and credit reports. Look for unfamiliar transactions, new accounts, inquiries, or changes to account details. The notice recommended reviewing statements and credit reports.
- Contact the relevant institution about suspicious activity. Use the number on your card or the institution’s official website, and report suspected fraud to the appropriate law-enforcement or regulatory agency.
- Consider a fraud alert or security freeze. These can make it harder for someone to open new credit in your name. Check current steps with the credit bureaus or an official consumer-protection source, rather than relying on a past notice for current procedures.
- Be alert to targeted messages. Information such as a name, contact details, date of birth, or government identifier can make impersonation attempts more convincing. Verify unexpected requests through a trusted channel before sharing additional information or clicking a link.
