Indian markets enter the week of 5–9 October 2026 with three closely watched events: the RBI’s scheduled Monetary Policy Committee meeting, TCS’s media-reported September-quarter results date, and volatile crude prices. The RBI meeting is confirmed for 5–7 October, but a rate hike remains a forecast—not a decision. TCS’s reported 8 October results date is not confirmed in the investor-calendar excerpt reviewed. Oil and global market pressures are important context, not a dependable forecast of where shares will go.

Key dates and what is confirmed

Date Event Status
5–7 October 2026 RBI Monetary Policy Committee meeting Scheduled in the RBI’s 2026–27 calendar, as reproduced by Track RBI (schedule).
7 October 2026 RBI policy decision Week-ahead coverage identifies Wednesday as the expected announcement day; the meeting schedule itself lists 5–7 October.
8 October 2026 TCS September-quarter results Reported as the expected date by Upstox, but not confirmed in the current TCS investor-calendar excerpt reviewed.
5–9 October 2026 Crude oil and wider market developments Prices and market conditions are volatile; the figures below are dated observations, not live quotes.

Why the RBI decision matters

The RBI’s August 2026 MPC meeting left the repo rate at 5.25% and retained a neutral stance, according to the resolution reproduced by Track RBI (August resolution). The statement cited uncertainty around growth and inflation, crude prices, geopolitics, monsoon risks and global trade policy.

Mint reported on 4 October that the RBI was widely expected to raise the repo rate by 25 basis points, to 5.50%, describing it as a possible first hike since February 2023 (Mint’s 4 October report). That is a reported market expectation, not an RBI commitment or an announced outcome. Mint also reported retail inflation of 4.82% in August, compared with 4.45% in July. The decision will be read against both inflation concerns and the growth uncertainty identified in the August statement.

TCS results: what markets may look for

Upstox reported that TCS was expected to announce September-quarter results on Thursday, 8 October, opening the large Indian IT earnings season (Upstox’s 4 October week-ahead report). The TCS investor-calendar excerpt reviewed lists a 9 July 2026 Q1 FY27 release and a 9 October 2025 Q2 FY26 release, but does not list the reported 8 October 2026 event (TCS investor relations calendar).

For the results and management commentary, the week-ahead report points to several items investors may watch:

  • Constant-currency revenue growth and operating margins.
  • Major contract wins and signals about discretionary technology spending.
  • Management commentary on how AI is affecting pricing.

These company-specific indicators may influence IT shares, while the RBI decision, oil prices and global risk conditions shape the broader setting.

Crude oil: volatile prices, uncertain supply signals

Upstox reported that the MCX crude 19 October contract settled at ₹9,008 per barrel, up 1.8% over the prior week, and that crude was above US$100. These are observations reported on 4 October, not current quotes or a reliable indication of the next move. The report attributed recent volatility to Gulf supply developments and geopolitical risk, and noted oil’s relevance to the rupee and inflation.

Before Asian markets opened on 5 October, Upstox reported that seven core OPEC+ producers were due to meet on Sunday, 4 October. The pre-meeting expectation was that November production targets would remain unchanged while a separate cut of about 2 million barrels per day continued through the end of 2026 (Reuters report on the pre-meeting expectation). The meeting’s eventual outcome is not established here; the reported expectation should not be mistaken for a result.

Market conditions going into the week

Upstox reported that the NIFTY 50 closed the prior week at 22,421, down 3.1%, while the SENSEX closed at 71,909, down 2.7%. It described an eight-week losing streak and said only 8% of NIFTY 50 stocks were above their 50-day moving average as of 1 October. These figures describe the market snapshot reported on 4 October; they do not predict the coming week.

The same report cited foreign selling, US 10-year Treasury yields at a 24-year high, a weaker rupee and crude above US$100 as pressures on risk sentiment. Those factors can complicate the response to domestic news: a policy or earnings signal will arrive amid external influences, rather than in isolation.

How to read the week’s signals

  • Separate schedule from forecast: the RBI meeting dates are scheduled; the possible rate increase is a reported expectation.
  • Check the company announcement: treat 8 October as TCS’s media-reported results date, not as confirmed by the investor-calendar excerpt reviewed.
  • Keep oil figures in context: the MCX settlement and above-US$100 observation are dated snapshots, while supply expectations are not the same as confirmed OPEC+ action.
  • Distinguish context from prediction: recent index declines, foreign selling and elevated yields describe the backdrop, not a certain direction for Indian markets.
