Raytheon has secured a five-year agreement valued at up to $24.4 billion to support production of the U.S. Navy’s SM-6 missile, RTX announced on October 1, 2026. The agreement also includes two option years. The figure is a maximum announced value—not confirmation that the full amount has been obligated or will be spent. RTX says the deal is intended to increase missile availability, but it has not disclosed a production quantity or delivery schedule. The headline’s exact speed figure of 2,660 mph is also not verified by the official sources cited here; the Royal Australian Navy describes the missile as traveling at “Greater than Mach 3.”
What the $24.4 billion SM-6 deal includes
RTX said its Raytheon business secured a five-year contract, with two additional option years, valued at up to $24.4 billion. The company characterized the agreement as a way to secure a consistent supply for the Navy and increase SM-6 availability. RTX’s October 1, 2026 announcement does not state how many missiles the agreement covers, how much funding is currently obligated, or when deliveries are expected.
Those omissions matter: a contract ceiling is not the same as money already committed, and an announced production objective is not a disclosed output schedule. RTX says it is investing in facilities, workforce, supplier partnerships, and factory automation to expand capacity. Those are the contractor’s descriptions of its efforts, not published unit or delivery targets.
Raytheon President Phil Jasper said in the announcement: “SM-6’s multi-mission capability is vital to our customer, and Raytheon is intensely focused on meeting the demand.”

What the SM-6 does
The SM-6 is a U.S. Navy missile designed for several roles. RTX identifies anti-air warfare, anti-surface warfare, and ballistic-missile defense among its capabilities, and says the missile has been fired from Navy ship-based platforms and land launchers. The Navy’s Director, Operational Test and Evaluation FY2022 report describes fleet air defense, extended-range over-the-horizon attacks against surface targets, overland air defense as part of an integrated fire-control concept, and sea-based terminal defense against short- and medium-range ballistic missiles.
These capabilities vary by block and configuration; they should not be read as a claim that every SM-6 variant has identical performance. The FY2022 report distinguished Block I and IA from Block IB, which the Navy then planned to use to extend engagement range with a new second-stage rocket motor. That report’s schedule reflects FY2022 planning, not a current delivery-status update.

Is the SM-6 really a 2,660-mph missile?
The exact 2,660-mph figure is not verified by the official sources cited for this article. The Royal Australian Navy’s public SM-6 specification gives the speed as “Greater than Mach 3,” without stating an exact miles-per-hour value.
Mach is a ratio to the local speed of sound, which changes with atmospheric conditions. Converting “greater than Mach 3” into a single mph figure therefore requires assumptions about those conditions. Without a source specifying those assumptions, “greater than Mach 3” is the more defensible description.

The numbers are not interchangeable. In particular, the Navy’s 139-missile budget plan is not a production target attached to the later RTX announcement, and the possible German sale is not part of the U.S. Navy contract.
