For a DIY radio whose main purpose is playing online stations, a Raspberry Pi running internet-radio software such as Volumio is the more direct documented route. If you want local DAB, FM, or AM broadcasts over the air—or want stations without relying on an internet connection—consider a Pi build with a compatible tuner shield and antenna. These are different ways to receive radio, so neither is a universal winner.

What “Raspberry Pi radio” can mean

The phrase can describe two distinct builds. An internet-radio Pi plays station streams over a network; a Pi with a broadcast tuner receives terrestrial signals through tuner hardware and an antenna. Both can be built into a radio-style enclosure, but their station sources and hardware needs differ.

That distinction matters more than the name on the project: a tuner shield is not required just to play internet stations, and streaming software alone does not provide over-the-air reception.

Internet-streaming Pi: the more direct route for online stations

Volumio’s getting-started guide documents installing its software on a Raspberry Pi to make a music player and streamer. Its Help Center article on internet radio says Volumio includes web-radio streams and lets users add their own. This route suits a project when the stations you want are available online and the radio can connect to a usable network.

A typical design involves choosing a Raspberry Pi board, a supported network connection, player software, an audio output, and—if desired—physical controls and an enclosure. Network setup and wireless support vary by Pi model and adapter, so check the Raspberry Pi setup and connectivity documentation for the exact hardware you plan to use.

Pi MusicBox is another documented internet-radio option, with HDMI and USB soundcard outputs described in its project documentation and manual. Those materials are old; verify that the image and your chosen hardware are still compatible before building around them.

Pi with a terrestrial tuner: choose it for broadcast reception

A Raspberry Pi radio tuner HAT or DAB/FM tuner shield adds radio-reception hardware for over-the-air stations. The Raspiaudio digital-radio project README describes a shield and software supporting DAB/DAB+, FM, HD Radio, AM, and AM HD, with antenna and audio connections. The project describes playing stations without depending on internet streaming.

Those listed formats describe that project, not every tuner shield. Before buying or assembling a tuner build, check that the particular device supports your Pi model, the bands you want, and broadcast standards used in your region. Plan for the antenna connection as well as the audio connection; receiving an over-the-air signal is a different job from opening a station stream.

Choose the audio output separately

Neither receiving method dictates how audio has to reach your speaker system. Raspberry Pi documents audio HATs and configuration; a USB DAC for a Raspberry Pi, HDMI audio, or another supported output may also fit the design. The right choice depends on the exact board, software image, and speakers or amplifier. Confirm compatibility rather than assuming every output works with every combination.

How to decide for your build

Build choice Best fit What it depends on Extra considerations
Internet-streaming Pi Stations available as online streams A suitable network connection and compatible player software Choose and verify the audio output; physical controls and display are separate interface and enclosure work.
Pi with terrestrial tuner Local broadcasts or use where internet access is not wanted or available A compatible tuner, its supported bands and regional standards, and an antenna Verify Pi compatibility and plan the tuner’s audio connection.
  • Choose streaming if your preferred stations offer streams and the radio’s location has dependable network access.
  • Consider a tuner shield if receiving local terrestrial broadcasts or playing radio without an internet connection is central to the project.
  • For either build, decide separately whether you want a Raspberry Pi audio HAT, USB DAC, HDMI, or another compatible audio path.
  • If you want a full display, tactile buttons, or a volume knob, treat those as additional control and enclosure choices; there is no single standard control kit established by these project examples.

What the comparison does—and does not—establish

The documented build paths explain the different reception methods, but they do not establish a universal winner for cost, sound quality, reliability, or complexity. Those outcomes depend on the specific Pi, software, tuner or audio hardware, network, and region. Choose by the stations and reception method you need, then verify the compatibility of the exact parts.
