For most beginners, Raspberry Pi OS is the better first choice for learning Linux and exploring cybersecurity on a Raspberry Pi. It is the official, free Raspberry Pi operating system, and Raspberry Pi recommends it for most uses. Choose Kali Linux when you already understand Linux and have a specific, authorized security-testing task that needs Kali’s tools—not as a shortcut to learning the basics.
Is Raspberry Pi OS good for hacking?
If by “hacking” you mean learning cybersecurity legally, Raspberry Pi OS is a practical place to begin. You can learn the Pi, Linux, and networking fundamentals before adding specialized security tools. Raspberry Pi OS is based on Debian Trixie, according to the current Raspberry Pi OS documentation, which identifies it as the official free OS and recommends it for most uses.
Raspberry Pi OS is a general-purpose operating system, not a dedicated penetration-testing distribution. That is an advantage at the beginning: you can build basic Linux skills without first navigating a specialized toolkit. A Raspberry Pi is one possible learning computer, not a requirement for studying cybersecurity.
Should a beginner use Kali Linux on a Raspberry Pi?
Usually not as a first Linux system. Kali is built for advanced penetration testing and security auditing. Its documentation says it assumes familiarity with Linux; it also advises against Kali for people unfamiliar with Linux or looking for a general-purpose desktop. Read What is Kali Linux? and Should I Use Kali Linux? for the project’s stated purpose and suitability guidance.

Use Kali when you have a defined, authorized assessment and need its environment. Installing Kali does not grant permission to test a network or device. Kali warns that misuse of security and penetration-testing tools without specific authorization may cause irreparable damage and significant personal or legal consequences.
How to choose between Raspberry Pi OS and Kali
| What matters | Raspberry Pi OS | Kali Linux |
|---|---|---|
| Your Linux experience | A sensible first OS for learning the Pi and Linux basics. | Better suited to users already comfortable with Linux. |
| Your goal | General-purpose use, Linux learning, and foundational cybersecurity study. | A defined penetration-testing or security-auditing task. |
| What you need from the OS | A conventional starting environment for learning and everyday Pi use. | A focused security-testing environment and its toolchain. |
| Wireless testing on Raspberry Pi 5 | This Kali-specific hardware caveat does not determine which OS to use for other tasks. | Kali says its Pi 5 image lacks Nexmon support for the internal Wi-Fi card, so wireless testing requires a USB Wi-Fi adapter. Check compatibility for the specific adapter and task. |
The Pi 5 wireless detail comes from Kali’s Raspberry Pi 5 instructions. It applies to wireless testing on that model with Kali; it does not mean every cybersecurity exercise needs an adapter.

What you need to set up a Raspberry Pi
A Raspberry Pi needs boot media containing an operating-system image. Raspberry Pi says most users choose a microSD card and recommends Raspberry Pi Imager to write the image. For a directly used desktop setup, plan on a display, keyboard, and mouse; headless network access is an alternative when it fits the project. See Getting started with your Raspberry Pi for the setup options.

- Choose Raspberry Pi OS for a first Linux-learning setup, or Kali if you have the experience and specific authorized task to justify it.
- Use Raspberry Pi Imager to write the selected OS image to boot media, commonly a microSD card.
- Set up a display, keyboard, and mouse for direct desktop use, or configure headless access for a project that does not need a local display.
- Before connecting the Pi to a network, secure its user accounts and keep its software updated.

- Learn the shell and how to navigate files.
- Understand user accounts and permissions.
- Learn how to update packages and maintain the operating system.
- Study networking concepts and practice identifying what your own devices are doing.
- Learn to back up important data and re-image boot media so you can recover the Pi.
- Move to an intentionally vulnerable lab, a personally owned test network, or a program that explicitly authorizes the activity.
Do not test random public or neighboring networks. Raspberry Pi’s operational-security guidance recommends protecting user accounts and keeping the OS updated. It also says only the most recent major release has all the latest security fixes, so a learning machine connected to a network still needs routine maintenance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need a Wi-Fi adapter for Kali on Raspberry Pi 5?
For wireless testing with Kali on Raspberry Pi 5, yes: Kali says the Pi 5 image does not support Nexmon on the built-in Wi-Fi card and requires a USB Wi-Fi adapter for that task. This is specific to Kali wireless testing on Pi 5, not a general requirement for running Kali or learning cybersecurity. Confirm that an adapter works for your exact model and intended use; the cited instructions do not establish compatibility for every adapter.
