The Raspberry Pi AI Camera is a camera module co-developed by Raspberry Pi Ltd and Sony Semiconductor Solutions. It uses Sony’s IMX500 intelligent vision sensor, which captures images and runs supported AI inference on the camera itself—so a separate AI accelerator is not required for those workloads. It works with Raspberry Pi computers, including Raspberry Pi 5, through the libcamera and Picamera2 software stack.

What is the Raspberry Pi AI Camera?

Announced on September 30, 2024, the Raspberry Pi AI Camera is a physical camera module built around Sony Semiconductor Solutions’ IMX500 intelligent vision sensor. Sony supplied the sensor and co-developed the product with Raspberry Pi Ltd. The companies described it as an edge-vision camera for developers: image capture and AI processing happen together on the module rather than requiring all inference to run on the Raspberry Pi computer.

The module connects to a Raspberry Pi using a standard camera ribbon cable. Check the connector and cable length required by your particular board before buying a replacement or extension cable.

How does its AI processing work?

The IMX500 combines an image sensor with an integrated AI accelerator. A compatible neural-network model can run on the camera, and the Raspberry Pi receives image and inference data to use in an application. Offloading inference can leave the Pi’s processor available for tasks such as application logic, networking, or responding to detections.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

This is not a promise that any model can be copied onto the camera and run unchanged. Raspberry Pi’s documented workflows include model conversion and cover both packaged models and custom model deployment. Official examples include MobileNet SSD for object detection and PoseNet for pose estimation; the software tools also support interpreting inference data in rpicam-apps and Picamera2.

Does it work with Raspberry Pi 5?

Yes. Sony says the camera is compatible with Raspberry Pi’s range of single-board computers, including Raspberry Pi 5, and Raspberry Pi’s product page lists compatibility with all Raspberry Pi computers. The documented software path uses Raspberry Pi’s libcamera-based tools, including rpicam-apps and Picamera2.

What are the camera’s resolution and frame modes?

The launch specifications differ between the two companies’ materials on the frame rate for the 2,028 × 1,520 mode, so the figures below retain their source attribution rather than treating them as one settled specification.

Source Resolution and frame rate Other stated specification
Raspberry Pi Ltd, 2024 4,056 × 3,040 at 10 fps; 2,028 × 1,520 at 30 fps 12 MP sensor; 78-degree field of view
Sony Semiconductor Solutions, 2024 4,056 × 3,040 at 10 fps; 2,028 × 1,520 at 40 fps Approximately 12.3 effective megapixels

Do you need a separate AI accelerator?

Not for supported inference workloads that run on the camera’s built-in accelerator. That is the central difference from a conventional camera setup in which inference runs on the Raspberry Pi or on an added accelerator. You still need a compatible Raspberry Pi computer to run your application, and a custom model must follow the camera’s supported conversion and deployment workflow.

The official materials describe the integrated processing and model workflows, but do not provide an independent, like-for-like benchmark against a conventional camera paired with an external accelerator. They therefore do not establish a numerical advantage in latency, power use, or total system cost for every project.

How much does the Raspberry Pi AI Camera cost?

At launch in 2024, Sony stated a suggested retail price of $70.00 before applicable local taxes. Raspberry Pi’s product page lists the camera at $70 and says it is available now. Actual stock, tax, and reseller pricing can vary by region, so check an approved reseller for the current delivered price. Raspberry Pi’s current product page also says production is planned to continue until at least January 2028; that is a production plan, not a guarantee of local availability.

When is this camera a good fit?

  • Consider it if you want to experiment with on-camera inference using the documented MobileNet SSD, PoseNet, or custom-model workflows, or want to keep supported inference workloads off the Pi’s processor.
  • Check the workflow first if your project depends on a particular neural network, image mode, or real-time performance target. Confirm that the model can be converted and deployed, and test the complete camera-and-board setup for your requirements.
  • Compare alternatives carefully if you already own a conventional Raspberry Pi camera and an accelerator. The AI Camera moves supported inference onto the camera, but official sources do not supply benchmark data for a universal speed, power, or cost comparison.

For organizations scaling IMX500-based applications beyond development, Raspberry Pi identifies Sony AITRIOS as an enterprise scale-up path.
