Both a Raspberry Pi 4 and Raspberry Pi 5 can be considered for looping a video to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, but neither board is a guaranteed 24/7 encoder. The key difference is how they handle video encoding: Raspberry Pi lists hardware H.264 encoding up to 1080p30 for the Pi 4, while the Pi 5 uses software video encoders. If your file can be sent without transcoding, that distinction may matter less; if it needs video encoding, it matters more.
Choose based on the source file, output settings, and the board you already own. Inspect the media, verify your FFmpeg build, and test the complete stream at its intended resolution and frame rate before relying on it unattended.
Which Raspberry Pi should you choose?
| Factor | Raspberry Pi 4 | Raspberry Pi 5 |
|---|---|---|
| Documented video encoding path | Raspberry Pi lists H.264 encoding up to 1080p30. Its encoding note includes a Pi 4 configuration using h264_v4l2m2m. Raspberry Pi 4 specifications and Raspberry Pi video-encoding note. |
Raspberry Pi documents software video encoders; its comparison configurations use libx264. CPU load and the selected preset therefore matter when transcoding. Raspberry Pi video-encoding note. |
| Practical implication | A sensible choice to investigate if your workflow needs H.264 transcoding and the documented hardware path fits your output requirements. The specification alone does not guarantee sustained performance for a particular stream. | A reasonable choice if you already own one or your tested software-encoding settings handle the workload. Raspberry Pi’s camera guidance does not establish an FFmpeg-specific low-latency setting. |
| Other setup detail established by the cited specifications | Model B specifications list Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi, a microSD slot, and USB-C 5V input with a minimum 3A rating. | A full connectivity comparison is not established by the cited sources. |
| Cost, availability, cooling, and continuous reliability | No comparative result is established by the cited sources. Check current local availability and validate cooling and stability in your own setup. | |
In short, if you must buy a board primarily to transcode H.264, the Pi 4 has a documented hardware-encoding capability worth considering. If you already have a Pi 5, test the software-encoding load before buying another board. Neither is the universal winner, and no published specification here establishes that either will run every file-loop workload continuously.
Check whether FFmpeg needs to encode the video
A file’s .mp4 extension does not tell you whether its video and audio streams suit your chosen YouTube ingest settings. Inspect the actual codecs, resolution, frame rate, audio, and container first. With FFmpeg installed, a useful starting point is:

ffprobe -hide_banner -i input.mp4
Compare what it reports with the output mode you intend to send. If the existing streams are compatible with that output and the chosen protocol/container, stream copying may avoid video encoding. If they are not compatible, FFmpeg must transcode the video, audio, or both. Whether copy mode works depends on the file, output format, and installed FFmpeg build; verify rather than assuming.
- If video needs transcoding: the Pi’s encoder path is central. The Pi 4’s documented H.264 capability is up to 1080p30; the Pi 5 relies on software video encoders.
- If video can be copied: the video-encoding difference may be less important, but FFmpeg still has to read and send the file in real time, and audio or output compatibility may still require work.
- If audio needs transcoding: confirm the necessary audio encoder is present in the installed FFmpeg build and account for that processing in your test.
Encoder availability and option support vary by FFmpeg build. Check the installed build with ffmpeg -version and inspect available encoders with ffmpeg -encoders; then test the actual command and file on the target board.

Set YouTube’s output requirements before choosing a command
Choose the output resolution and frame rate first, then use YouTube’s current live encoder table to select the supported settings and recommended bitrate for that exact mode. YouTube’s recommendations vary by resolution and frame rate, so there is no single bitrate to apply to every stream. Its guidance supports AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS ingestion. Check the current requirements at YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Use the stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube’s own live setup. Treat the key as a password: do not paste it into a public script, screenshot, forum post, or article. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s live settings.

Build and validate the FFmpeg loop
FFmpeg documents -stream_loop as an input option and -re as a way to read an input at its native rate, which is useful for pacing file input as a live stream. Option order matters: input options belong before the relevant -i. See the FFmpeg documentation and FFmpeg protocol documentation for the installed version’s exact syntax and supported output protocol.
A command’s encoding options depend on your file, installed build, selected output mode, and YouTube’s current requirements. Do not copy a generic command with a made-up key or assume an encoder name will be available. In particular, verify that the chosen video and audio encoders appear in your build, that copy mode is compatible if you use it, and that the output URL uses the RTMPS details provided by YouTube.

- Inspect the source. Use
ffprobe -hide_banner -i input.mp4to record the video and audio codecs, dimensions, frame rate, and stream layout. - Choose the target mode. Select resolution and frame rate, then consult YouTube’s live encoder table for the corresponding bitrate and other requirements.
- Decide copy versus transcode. Copy only streams that are compatible with the output combination; otherwise select encoders that your FFmpeg build and board support. On Pi 4, investigate the documented
h264_v4l2m2mpath if H.264 video encoding is needed. On Pi 5, expect software encoding and validate CPU load with the settings you intend to use. - Loop and pace the file. Apply
-stream_loopas an input option and use-reto pace file input at native rate. Follow the FFmpeg documentation for the exact placement and syntax for your version. - Send to YouTube securely. Use YouTube’s RTMPS ingest details and private stream key. Confirm that YouTube’s preview or ingest status shows a healthy signal before treating the setup as ready.
- Run a sustained test on the actual setup. At the intended output mode, watch CPU load, board temperature and throttling, network behavior, dropped frames, FFmpeg output, and YouTube’s ingest status. A short successful start is not evidence of continuous reliability.
Raspberry Pi documents --low-latency as an option for its rpicam-vid camera software on Pi 5, with coding-efficiency and maximum-frame-rate tradeoffs. That option is not an FFmpeg flag and does not configure an FFmpeg file-loop stream. See Raspberry Pi’s camera software guidance.
Prepare the Pi for an unattended stream
- Use a suitable power source for the exact board; the Pi 4 Model B specification lists USB-C 5V input with a minimum 3A rating.
- Plan cooling and test temperatures under the real encoding load, particularly if transcoding.
- Prefer a dependable wired network for a fixed installation when practical, but Ethernet does not guarantee sufficient or uninterrupted upstream bandwidth.
- Decide how FFmpeg will restart after an error or reboot, and how you will notice that YouTube is no longer receiving the stream.
- Keep the stream key out of shared files and logs, and limit access to the account and device that can use it.
- Check that the video and audio are yours to stream or that you have the necessary rights. YouTube’s copyright and monetization rules still apply to a looped prerecorded stream; looping a file does not itself establish permission or eligibility.

FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder
The installed build may not include the selected encoder. Check ffmpeg -encoders and choose an encoder actually available on that installation; do not assume every Raspberry Pi image ships with the same FFmpeg build.

The stream starts but drops frames or cannot sustain the selected mode
Transcoding may exceed the board’s practical capacity, or the network may not sustain the output. Confirm whether video could be copied instead, test a lower output mode against YouTube’s settings, and inspect CPU load, temperature/throttling, and network behavior. Recheck the YouTube bitrate recommendation for the mode you choose.
YouTube does not accept the feed
Check the RTMPS server URL and stream key against YouTube’s live setup, then review the selected resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and audio format against its current encoder guidance. Keep the key private while correcting it.
The image works but audio does not
Inspect the input audio stream with ffprobe, verify that your output audio codec is supported for RTMP/RTMPS, and check whether the required audio encoder exists in your FFmpeg build. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio in its live encoder guidance.
The Pi runs for a while, then becomes unstable
Check power, cooling, temperature, throttling, and network reliability under sustained load. The cited board specifications do not guarantee a particular 24/7 result; validate restart and recovery behavior rather than assuming a successful initial connection will persist.
