OmniAuth handles the Rack middleware portion of a provider sign-in flow: it sends a browser to /auth/:provider, processes the provider’s response, and makes an authentication hash available to the callback request. Your Rails application must still decide whether that identity may create or link an account, and how to establish its own session.
What OmniAuth does—and what your Rails app must do
OmniAuth is middleware, not a complete account-management system. A configured provider strategy conducts the authentication flow. On the callback, OmniAuth places the resulting data in request.env['omniauth.auth']. The Rails application is responsible for interpreting that data and applying its own account and session rules.
- OmniAuth and the strategy: handle the middleware flow and return provider authentication data.
- Your callback code: decides what identity information to trust and how it maps to an application account.
- Your application: creates or finds a user, handles account linking or rejection, and establishes its own login session.
A successful provider callback does not, by itself, mean a Rails user has been created or that the user is signed into your application. Treat the authentication hash as input to your account policy, not as a finished application session.
Choose a concrete provider strategy
The omniauth-oauth2 gem is an abstract base for provider-specific strategies; it is not a standalone integration that knows a provider’s identity fields or user ID. A concrete strategy must supply provider-specific behavior and configuration. Provider strategies are maintained separately, so check the selected strategy’s documentation, maintenance status, release compatibility, and provider requirements before integrating it.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Compare strategies on the details that affect your app:
- Which authorization flow and PKCE protections the strategy and provider support.
- Required scopes and the identity fields returned for the account policy you intend to implement.
- Exact callback or redirect URI requirements.
- Whether token refresh is available and how refresh tokens are handled.
- Compatibility with the Ruby, Rails, OmniAuth, and strategy versions you plan to use.
The abstract OAuth 2.0 strategy documentation demonstrates a provider subclass with option :pkce, true. Do not assume that setting is supported or sufficient for every concrete strategy: verify its documentation and the provider’s capabilities.

Integrate OmniAuth into a Rails web app
The OmniAuth project’s Rails-without-Devise example provides a structural outline. It adds omniauth and omniauth-rails_csrf_protection, installs OmniAuth::Builder in the middleware stack, routes the provider callback to a sessions controller, and reads request.env['omniauth.auth'] in that controller.
- Add the integration dependencies. Include OmniAuth, the selected provider strategy, and
omniauth-rails_csrf_protection. Confirm current versions and Ruby/Rails compatibility in the stable-release documentation and the strategy’s own documentation; the project’s README on its in-development branch may not describe the stable release. - Configure the middleware and strategy. Use
OmniAuth::Builderto register the concrete provider strategy and its required configuration. Keep provider-specific values and callback rules aligned with that provider’s documentation. - Route the callback. Map
/auth/:provider/callbackto the controller action that will process the sign-in result. The initial request goes to/auth/:provider. - Apply account policy in the callback. Read
request.env['omniauth.auth'], validate and interpret the identity fields your app needs, then find or create an account, link it under your rules, or reject the sign-in. - Establish the Rails session. After the account decision succeeds, set the application’s own session according to its existing authentication design. Handle failure and cancellation paths as well as successful callbacks.
This outline does not define a safe universal user-creation policy. In particular, decide deliberately how your app handles an identity that matches an existing account, a provider response with missing or changed fields, and an attempted account link. Those are application decisions, not OmniAuth’s.

The Developer strategy shown in the OmniAuth documentation is explicitly insecure and intended only for development. Do not use it as a production identity provider.
Keep OAuth sign-in aligned with current security guidance
RFC 9700, the OAuth 2.0 Security Best Current Practice, recommends authorization code flow instead of the implicit grant, whose authorization response can expose access tokens. Public clients must use PKCE; confidential clients are also recommended to use it. For PKCE, S256 is the challenge method that does not expose the verifier in the authorization request.

RFC 9700 also requires clients to prevent cross-site request forgery (CSRF). PKCE can provide CSRF protection when the client has ensured the authorization server supports PKCE. Keep each PKCE challenge transaction-specific and bound to the client and user agent. Rails applications should include OmniAuth’s documented omniauth-rails_csrf_protection integration and verify how the chosen strategy, provider support, callback, and session work together; do not infer that one setting makes the full flow safe.
- Request only the token privileges needed for the application’s use case and resource audience.
- Do not expose tokens in URLs or logs.
- For public clients, refresh tokens must be sender-constrained or rotated when they are issued.
These are protocol-level recommendations, not a guarantee that every provider or strategy offers each protection. Check the specific provider’s supported flow and token behavior before relying on them.

Check middleware and sessions in Rails API apps
API-oriented Rails applications may not have the session middleware OmniAuth expects. The OmniAuth Rails guidance notes that session middleware may need to be reintroduced, and lists ActionDispatch CacheStore, CookieStore, and MemCacheStore as options. Session options must be passed when the middleware is built. Its CookieStore example also adds ActionDispatch::Cookies.
Before testing the callback, check that the target application has the required middleware in the right order and that the intended session options reach it. The exact setup depends on the Rails version and the application’s middleware configuration; do not copy an example without checking it against your app. If your design is intentionally stateless, decide how the callback completes authentication without assuming that OmniAuth will create a Rails session for you.
Quick Recap
What to verify before shipping
- The chosen provider strategy is maintained and compatible with the versions in your application.
- The provider’s redirect URI, required scopes, identity fields, PKCE support, and refresh-token behavior are understood.
- The callback applies an explicit account-creation and account-linking policy rather than trusting every returned field indiscriminately.
- CSRF defenses and, where supported, transaction-specific PKCE are configured and tested across the full redirect and callback flow.
- Rails session and cookie middleware are present and configured as intended, especially in an API application.
- Tokens are limited to the necessary privileges and are not written into URLs or logs.
