R versus Python is not a contest with a universal winner. Zivan Karaman’s January 27, 2022 essay argues that perceptions of code quality may partly reflect who uses each language and what their jobs ask them to do. Karaman explicitly says this is a subjective explanation, not one supported by rigorous data or representative samples. It is a useful hypothesis to consider—not proof that one language’s users write better code.
What Karaman’s human-factor argument says—and what it does not
Karaman challenges the idea that R is suitable only for “quick and dirty” analysis. His proposed explanation for differences in how R and Python code are perceived is about people and working context: users may come from different backgrounds and face different incentives in their day-to-day work. The claim is an opinion, not a representative audit of codebases or a measured comparison of code quality.
Karaman states the limitation directly: “This opinion is obviously not based on a rigorous scientific approach, in the sense that it is not based on objective data, as such data is not (and I think can’t be) available.” No representative statistic in the sources cited here establishes which language’s typical code is better, or whether user backgrounds cause a quality difference. The essay should therefore prompt questions about work practices, not settle a ranking.
What the languages are designed to do
R: statistical computing and graphics
The R Project describes R as “a language and environment for statistical computing and graphics.” That focus makes R a natural candidate when the central work is statistical analysis, data exploration, or visualizing results. Norm Matloff’s comparison also discusses R’s data-science workflow and graphics, while noting that package-specific strengths are judgments that can change over time.

Python: general-purpose programming
Python’s official documentation describes it as a general-purpose language with an extensive standard library and the ability to extend it. That breadth is relevant when a data task sits inside a larger scripting, application-development, or systems workflow. Matloff’s December 17, 2023 comparison discusses Python’s general-purpose strengths and neural-network tooling alongside R’s capabilities; it is an expert comparison, not a controlled study of which language produces better work.
Learning difficulty depends on the learner and the task. The official Python tutorial is aimed at programmers who are new to Python, not beginners who are new to programming. That prerequisite is a reason not to assume Python is automatically the easier first language for someone without programming experience; it does not establish that R is easier either.

Choose for the work, the team, and the code’s life cycle
Instead of asking which language is inherently more professional, assess the project’s actual needs. These are practical decision factors, not a quantified scorecard.
- Task: Is the core work statistical analysis and graphics, general-purpose scripting, application development, or a combination?
- Your background: What programming and statistical experience do you already have? A language that fits existing skills may let you contribute sooner, while learning a new language may be worthwhile for the work ahead.
- Team capability: Which language can teammates read, review, test, and support? A technically suitable language can still be a poor fit if nobody on the team can maintain the code.
- Code life cycle: Is this a one-off exploration, a reusable analysis, a maintained project, or a deployed application? Reuse and deployment call for attention to testing, documentation, dependencies, and ownership—not just language choice.
- Project boundaries: Does one ecosystem meet the needs, or would the project benefit from using both? A mixed workflow is possible, but adds integration and environment-management work.
These questions help turn broad claims about user culture into concrete choices about skills, review practices, and maintenance. Neither R nor Python guarantees good or bad code: the team’s practices and the project’s requirements matter alongside the language.

When using both R and Python makes sense
A project does not have to make a permanent either-or choice. Matloff describes reticulate as an option for calling Python from R, allowing a workflow to combine the two ecosystems. That possibility is most relevant when a project has a clear reason to use capabilities from both languages.
Bridging languages is not free of complexity. Mixed R/Python applications can require additional work to manage environments and system dependencies. Before combining them, decide who owns each part, how dependencies will be installed and reproduced, and how the pieces will be tested together. If one language can meet the requirements and the team can maintain it, a single-language workflow may be simpler.

Practical ways to start learning
If your work points toward R, the free online R for Data Science (2e) offers practical instruction in data-science workflows with R. For an environment that supports work with R and Python, Posit describes RStudio Desktop as a free, open-source IDE and Positron as an IDE for both languages. These tools can support learning and development; they do not determine which language fits a project.
How to read the evidence
The best-supported takeaway is modest: R and Python serve overlapping but distinct needs, and people’s backgrounds and incentives may shape how they use them. Karaman’s essay raises that human-factor possibility but disclaims a rigorous, representative evidentiary basis. The official language descriptions clarify their broad purposes, while Matloff offers a dated expert comparison of workflows and tooling. None of these sources demonstrates that one language’s typical code is superior.
