The announcement followed QCT’s qualification as an OCP Solution Provider and covered the F03A and F03C servers, JBR storage, the T3048-LY2 switch and the Windmill F03 motherboard.
Rackgo X was built around Open Rack, an OCP design that replaces the conventional 19-inch equipment model with a wider, rack-level power and service architecture. The launch was aimed at data-center operators and other enterprise buyers, not ordinary consumer hardware shoppers.
What Quanta launched with Rackgo X
QCT presented Rackgo X as a complete set of compute, storage, networking and board-level building blocks for OCP-style data centers. The company said the designs would be contributed to the Open Compute Foundation so other manufacturers could develop products from them.
| Product | Form and purpose | Announced specification |
|---|---|---|
| F03A | High-density compute server | 2 OpenU (OU), four nodes |
| F03C | Compute server with greater I/O flexibility | 2 OU, three nodes |
| JBR | JBOD storage enclosure | 2 OU, hidden-shelf design and 28 hot-swappable 3.5-inch drives |
| T3048-LY2 | Data-center Ethernet switch | Layer 2 and Layer 3 switching with dual-speed 1/10-gigabit Ethernet for public- and private-cloud deployments |
| Windmill F03 | Motherboard for Rackgo X enclosures | Half-width, dual-socket Intel Xeon E5-2600-family board with 16 DIMM slots |
The Windmill F03 was not a complete server by itself. It was a board option designed to slide into Rackgo X enclosures, allowing a system builder to use the common chassis and rack infrastructure with a different compute configuration.

What Open Rack is
Open Rack is an OCP rack specification for large-scale computing. Its physical dimensions differ from the EIA-310 19-inch rack convention used by most general-purpose servers.
| Attribute | Open Rack | Traditional 19-inch rack |
|---|---|---|
| Equipment bay | 21 inches inside a 24-inch rack column | 19-inch equipment width |
| Vertical unit | 1 OU = 48 mm | 1 rack unit (U) = 44.5 mm |
| Published equipment-space efficiency | 87.5% | About 73% |
| Power arrangement | Rack-level power shelves and rear bus bars; servers do not carry their own power supplies | Power supplies are normally installed in each server |
| Chassis range described by OCP | Modular designs from 0.5 OU to 12 OU | Varies by conventional server and rack design |
The 87.5% and approximately 73% space-efficiency figures are OCP’s 2013 design claims, not independent comparative test results. The wider bay creates more usable equipment width, while the taller OU gives each vertical increment slightly more height than a conventional U.
How Open Rack power differs
In an Open Rack design, a server connects to rear bus bars rather than carrying its own internal power-supply units. The bus bars receive power from rack-level power shelves. OCP described both AC and DC power paths, with battery cabinets or battery backup units able to supply DC power if the AC source is lost.

This centralizes a function that is normally repeated in every server. It also means that the rack’s power shelves, bus bars and backup arrangement become part of the system that a data-center operator must design, qualify and service. A conventional 19-inch server can generally be moved between compatible racks without adopting this rack-level power architecture; Open Rack equipment is designed around it.

OCP described Open Rack as a front-serviceable, modular platform. Chassis can be assembled in sizes from 0.5 OU through 12 OU, and individual components can be replaced according to their own life cycles instead of replacing an entire server whenever one part becomes obsolete.
OCP’s comparison used a 2.5-year whole-server replacement cycle and component lives that can reach 10 years. Those numbers describe the OCP design rationale published in 2013; they are not a later field study or an independent reliability test. The practical benefit depends on the operator having compatible replacement modules, an inventory plan and staff familiar with the Open Rack system.

Open Rack versus a standard 19-inch rack
Space and equipment fit
The 21-inch Open Rack bay is wider than a 19-inch bay, and OCP’s published calculation therefore assigns it higher equipment-space efficiency. That extra width is useful only when the server, storage and networking hardware is designed for the Open Rack envelope. Standard 19-inch equipment does not automatically become compatible merely because it is placed in a wider cabinet.
Power and cabling
Open Rack moves power conversion and distribution toward the rack. Conventional systems usually bring power supplies, power cords and related cabling into each server. The two approaches require different procurement, spares and installation procedures.

Thermal management and maintenance
Open Rack’s modular chassis and front-service orientation are intended for dense, repeatable deployments. They can simplify planned component replacement, but they do not remove the need to engineer airflow, power capacity and service clearances for the specific rack population.

Compatibility with existing hardware
OCP stated that Open Rack could be adapted to accommodate existing 19-inch equipment. The cited material does not establish universal compatibility, so operators should verify the mechanical adapter, power, cooling and cable requirements for every legacy device rather than assume that any 19-inch server will fit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the 2013 announcement mattered
QCT identified itself as the sixth company to qualify as an OCP solution provider, alongside Hyve Solutions, Avnet, Amax, Penguin Computing and Racklive. Rackspace was named as a Quanta technology customer. The announcement positioned Rackgo X as a way for data-center customers to obtain OCP-inspired systems from a commercial supplier while keeping the underlying designs open for broader industry use.
The target customer was an operator seeking scalable, capital- and operational-efficiency improvements across a data center, rather than someone assembling a single workstation or home server. The T3048-LY2 addressed the network layer, JBR addressed dense disk storage, and the F03A, F03C and Windmill F03 supplied multiple compute configurations within the same rack family.

Can you buy Rackgo X or Open Rack on Amazon?
No Amazon listing is established by the cited launch material. The sources describe specialized data-center procurement for Rackgo X F03A/F03C servers, JBR storage, the T3048-LY2 switch, the Windmill F03 motherboard and Open Rack infrastructure such as racks, bus bars and power shelves. They do not document consumer Amazon listings or current retail availability.
A generic Amazon search for “server rack” or “network switch” may return conventional 19-inch products, but those results should not be represented as Rackgo X or Open Rack hardware. Anyone evaluating a deployment should contact an OCP solution provider or the relevant manufacturer and verify present-day availability, mechanical compatibility, power architecture and support terms.
Quick Recap
What to verify before specifying an Open Rack deployment
- Whether the required servers, storage and switches use the Open Rack 21-inch equipment envelope and the 48 mm OU height.
- Rack power-shelf, bus-bar, AC/DC and battery-backup requirements for the planned load.
- Cooling, airflow and front-service clearances for the exact chassis mix.
- Availability of replacement modules and the operator’s intended component-replacement schedule.
- Any adapters and electrical or thermal constraints for legacy 19-inch equipment.
- Current supplier qualification, support coverage and delivery status, since the Rackgo X announcement dates from 2013.
