Qualcomm’s X85 is a 5G modem-RF system; Dragonwing FWA Gen 4 Elite is a platform for building fixed wireless access (FWA) gateways around it. Qualcomm announced both on March 3, 2025, and says the FWA platform was shipping to equipment makers at launch. That is not the same as a finished router being available to consumers.
What are the X85 and Dragonwing FWA Gen 4 Elite?
The names describe two related but different parts of a connectivity product. The Qualcomm X85 5G Modem-RF handles cellular connectivity. Dragonwing FWA Gen 4 Elite is the broader platform that equipment makers can use to build fixed wireless gateways and related customer-premises equipment.

Qualcomm describes the X85 as its eighth-generation modem-to-antenna solution and fourth-generation AI-powered 5G connectivity system. It is intended for more than home broadband: Qualcomm also identifies premium Android phones, PCs, automotive, XR, and other connected devices as target categories. The FWA Gen 4 Elite platform is specifically aimed at fixed wireless equipment. See Qualcomm’s X85 announcement and FWA platform announcement.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat fixed wireless access means
Fixed wireless access delivers home or business internet over a wireless carrier network to a stationary gateway at the premises, rather than over a wired last-mile connection such as cable or fiber. The gateway uses cellular connectivity on the network side and can distribute a local connection over Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Service quality depends on the carrier’s coverage, spectrum, network capacity, gateway design, and plan.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
How fast is Qualcomm’s X85?
Qualcomm lists peak rates of up to 12.5 Gbps downlink and 3.7 Gbps uplink for the X85. For the FWA platform, its product brief specifies that the 12.5 Gbps downlink figure uses FR1 and FR2 together; the listed peak for FR1 alone is up to 10.3 Gbps. These are vendor platform peaks, not typical household speeds or a carrier-service guarantee. Reaching them depends on factors including available spectrum, network deployment, signal conditions, device design, and the service plan.
| Qualcomm-listed figure | What it describes |
|---|---|
| Up to 12.5 Gbps downlink | FWA platform peak with FR1 and FR2 combined; Qualcomm specification. |
| Up to 10.3 Gbps downlink | FWA platform peak on FR1 alone; Qualcomm specification. |
| Up to 3.7 Gbps uplink | X85 peak uplink specification; not a user-throughput promise. |
FR1 and FR2 refer to different 5G frequency ranges. Qualcomm lists sub-6 GHz support as well as mmWave capabilities and FR1+FR2 carrier aggregation. Its specifications also include six-component-carrier sub-6 GHz downlink aggregation, 400 MHz downlink carrier aggregation, and 1024-QAM support on sub-6. These features describe what the platform can support; a carrier and a finished device do not necessarily implement every band or combination.
What does 5G Advanced-ready mean here?
Qualcomm lists 3GPP Release 18 support for the X85 and describes Dragonwing FWA Gen 4 Elite as 5G Advanced-ready. That establishes a platform capability, not that every operator has deployed every Release 18 feature or enabled it in a particular location. Actual access depends on carrier network deployment, device implementation, and service availability. Qualcomm’s current X85 product page and FWA Gen 4 Elite product page list platform capabilities.

- Tri-Band WiFi 6E Router - Up to 5400 Mbps WiFi for faster browsing, streaming, gaming and downloading, all at the same time(6 GHz: 2402 Mbps;5 GHz: 2402 Mbps;2.4 GHz: 574 Mbps)
- WiFi 6E Unleashed – The 6 GHz band brings more bandwidth, faster speeds, and near-zero latency; Enables more responsive gaming and video chatting
- Connect More Devices—True Tri-Band and OFDMA technology increase capacity by 4 times to enable simultaneous transmission to more devices
- Unique Design, More RAM, Better Processing - A unique housing design provides optimal heat dissipation, combined with a 1.0 GHz dual-core CPU and 512 MB High-Speed Memory, the AXE75 is designed for long-term reliability and performance.
- EasyMesh-compatible - Extend network range even more by adding EasyMesh-compatible routers, extenders, or wireless powerline adapters for a seamless, whole-home connection. Eliminate dead zones, drops, and lag as you move across your home.
What features can an FWA gateway maker build in?
The Gen 4 Elite brief describes a set of hardware and software options for OEM designs. They are not a guarantee that a retail gateway will include every feature.
Wi-Fi and wired networking
- Tri-band Wi-Fi 7 across 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz, with up to 12 spatial streams.
- Two configurable 10 GE Ethernet ports.
- Software support for OpenWRT, RDK-B, and prplOS.
Those specifications are platform-level options. When assessing a finished gateway, check its own Wi-Fi radio configuration, ports, and software support rather than assuming the platform maximum appears in every model.
AI-assisted network functions
Qualcomm says the X85 has a dedicated tensor accelerator and delivers AI inference 30% faster than the previous generation. For the FWA Gen 4 Elite platform, Qualcomm lists up to 40 TOPS from its AI hardware configuration, which includes a Hexagon NPU coprocessor. Qualcomm describes possible uses such as prioritizing gaming or OTT voice traffic, selecting networks, and supporting edge applications.

The X85 is not itself a consumer router, and the FWA platform is intended for manufacturers to build products. Qualcomm said the platform was available and shipping when announced in March 2025; that statement does not establish that a particular finished gateway is on sale in a given market today.

What to check before choosing a 5G FWA gateway
Choose based on a complete gateway and service offer, not the modem’s headline peak rate. Verify these details with the device maker and carrier for your region:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Carrier approval: Confirm the exact model is accepted on the intended network.
- Local bands: Check that the gateway supports the carrier’s deployed bands, including whether sub-6 or mmWave is relevant where you live.
- Coverage and capacity: Confirm service is offered at the address; available signal and network congestion affect real performance.
- Plan terms: Review data allowances, speed policies, and other service restrictions that can shape the experience.
