The first Snapdragon X Elite Copilot+ PCs went on sale starting June 18, 2024, running Windows 11—not a separately announced Windows 12 release.
What is Snapdragon X Elite?
Snapdragon X Elite is a Qualcomm system-on-a-chip (SoC) designed for Windows laptops. It combines Qualcomm’s custom Oryon CPU with a Hexagon neural processing unit (NPU). Qualcomm said the processor could run generative AI models with more than 13 billion parameters on-device. Qualcomm’s October 2023 announcement introduced the chip and said laptops from leading PC makers were expected from mid-2024.
At the May 2024 launch, Qualcomm specified an NPU rated at 45 TOPS (trillion operations per second) for Snapdragon X laptop platforms and positioned the chip for local AI workloads. Qualcomm also published performance-per-watt comparisons with Apple M3 and Intel Core Ultra 7; those are vendor-reported figures using Qualcomm’s stated methods, not independent test results. Qualcomm’s May 2024 launch release has its descriptions and comparisons.
When did Snapdragon X Elite laptops launch?
Qualcomm and Microsoft announced the first Copilot+ PCs on May 20, 2024. Qualcomm said more than 20 devices had been announced and that customers could begin buying them from major retailers on June 18, 2024. The first wave included PCs from Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Microsoft, and Samsung. These dates describe the 2024 launch; they do not establish current stock or pricing.

On May 21, Qualcomm separately announced a Snapdragon Dev Kit for Windows for developers building or optimizing Windows AI-PC applications. It was a developer-focused announcement, distinct from the consumer laptop launch. Qualcomm’s Copilot+ PC announcement and its Dev Kit announcement provide the launch details.
Which version of Windows shipped with Snapdragon X Elite?
The first Snapdragon X Elite Copilot+ PCs ran Windows 11 on Arm. The “next version of Windows” wording around the chip’s planned arrival referred to the Windows 11 24H2-era platform used by those PCs. It was not confirmation that Windows 12 would ship with them.

Microsoft’s 2024 battery testing for launch-era Copilot+ PCs used pre-release Windows Version 26097.5003 (24H2), over Wi-Fi, with screen brightness set to 150 nits. Those testing details apply to Microsoft’s reported battery figures, not necessarily to every shipping laptop’s software or results. Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC announcement describes the first devices and test conditions.
Can Windows on Arm run existing apps?
Yes, but support depends on the application. Windows on Arm can run software compiled natively for Arm64, and Microsoft’s Prism emulation engine translates many x86 and x64 applications that do not have native Arm versions. Emulation is a compatibility route, not a guarantee that every app, plug-in, driver, or workflow will behave as it does on an Intel- or AMD-based PC.

Microsoft said nearly 90% of total app minutes in its cited usage snapshot were already spent in apps with native Arm versions. That is a usage measure, not a claim that 90% of all Windows applications are native or compatible. Surface documentation explains the Arm64 architecture, native and emulated apps, Prism, developer tooling, and App Assure support for business customers. Microsoft’s Surface Arm FAQ is a useful starting point for checking the platform.
Before choosing a particular Snapdragon X Elite laptop, check the software you depend on—especially business applications, specialist peripherals, and tools that rely on drivers or plug-ins. Confirm native Arm64 availability with the software vendor where possible, and test essential workflows during the retailer’s return period.

How long does a Snapdragon X Elite laptop battery last?
There is no single battery-life figure for every Snapdragon X Elite laptop: capacity, display, configuration, software, and workload differ by model. In May 2024, Microsoft reported up to 22 hours of local video playback and up to 15 hours of web browsing for Copilot+ PCs under its stated tests. The tests used pre-release Windows Version 26097.5003 (24H2), Wi-Fi, and 150-nit brightness; Microsoft noted that actual battery life varies by device and use. Treat these as conditional, manufacturer-reported maximums, not a promise for every model or everyday workload. Microsoft’s test description gives the conditions.

How to choose among Snapdragon X Elite laptops
Compare specific configurations rather than assuming the processor alone determines the best choice. Check these points against your work and budget:
Quick Recap
- App compatibility: Verify that essential programs and peripherals work natively on Arm64 or adequately through Prism emulation.
- Cooling and sustained performance: Laptop size and thermal design can affect performance over extended workloads. Compare independent reviews that test the exact configuration you are considering.
- Battery life: Look for tests conducted with the same workload and comparable settings; the launch-era Microsoft figures are not a like-for-like comparison of every listed model.
- Display and ports: Match screen size, panel features, and available connections to how you work, including whether you need adapters.
- Repairability and warranty: Review the warranty and service options for the specific model and country.
- Price and availability: Check current retailer listings; the June 2024 launch date does not indicate present stock or pricing.
