Quad High Definition (QHD) is a display and video resolution of 2560 × 1440 pixels, also known as 1440p. It contains about 3.69 million pixels, which makes it sharper than Full HD (1920 × 1080) but noticeably below consumer 4K (3840 × 2160).
What the QHD dimensions mean
A QHD screen or video frame is 2560 pixels wide and 1440 pixels tall. Android’s developer documentation for the CameraX Quality API describes the QHD video tier as “Quad High Definition (QHD) 1440p video quality” and says that this quality “usually corresponds to a resolution of 2560 x 1440 (1440p) pixels.” The word “usually” matters: the label describes a standard size, but the exact output depends on the camera and the app.
Multiplying the two dimensions gives the total pixel count: 2560 × 1440 = 3,686,400 pixels. Samsung Business Insights (2026) gives the same figure in its comparison of QHD, Full HD and 4K monitors. A government document from the California Energy Commission, dating from about 2013, rounds the same number to 3.69 megapixels.

The “quad” in the name refers to pixel count, not to a fourfold increase in width or height. Full HD (1920 × 1080) is the reference point. QHD doubles the width and the height of 1280 × 720 HD, so the total pixel count is four times that of HD, which is why HP’s consumer explainer describes QHD as quad HD. Note that 2560 × 1440 is not exactly double 1920 × 1080, so the comparison with Full HD is roughly 1.78 times the pixels rather than four times.

QHD compared with Full HD, 2K and 4K
| Name | Dimensions | Total pixels | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| HD (720p) | 1280 × 720 | 921,600 | The base for the “quad” comparison. |
| Full HD (1080p) | 1920 × 1080 | 2,073,600 | Lower resolution than QHD, per the California Energy Commission material. |
| QHD (1440p) | 2560 × 1440 | 3,686,400 | Android’s documented QHD/1440p size. |
| UHD / consumer 4K (2160p) | 3840 × 2160 | 8,294,400 | Android lists this as the usual UHD/2160p size. It is not QHD. |
| Cinematic 2K | 2048 × 1080 | 2,211,840 | A film-production format, not the same as QHD. |
The pixel totals in the table are simple arithmetic from the listed dimensions. The figures for each name come from the sources noted in the text above.
Is QHD the same as 4K?
No. Android’s documentation treats QHD/1440p and UHD/2160p as separate tiers. A 4K display has about 2.25 times as many pixels as a QHD display, so the two should not be used as synonyms in product listings or specifications.

Is QHD the same as 2K?
Often, but not precisely. LG notes that QHD is commonly called “2K” in consumer marketing, while cinematic 2K is 2048 × 1080, a different format with a different aspect ratio. If accuracy matters, use “QHD” or “1440p” rather than “2K.”

- Confirm the panel’s native resolution in the monitor or laptop specification sheet. It should read 2560 × 1440.
- Check the supported refresh rate and color depth at that resolution, since these limits are often different at 1440p than at 1080p.
- On Windows, open Settings > System > Display and confirm that 2560 × 1440 appears under Display resolution.
- If QHD is missing, update the graphics driver and check the cable: older HDMI versions may not carry 1440p at high refresh rates.
