Yes, if the ticketing plugin you choose includes a browser-based scanner. Staff open the check-in page in a phone’s browser, allow camera access, and point the camera at each attendee’s QR code. Nothing has to be installed on the door phone. Whether this works smoothly at your event depends on the plugin, because HTTPS requirements, staff access, manual fallback and connectivity differ between products. Check those points before you sell a single ticket.
What the app-free workflow needs
- A plugin with a browser scanner. Orange Cat QR Event Tickets describes scanning with the phone camera in a mobile browser, with nothing to install, in its WordPress.org listing. The QR Code Tickets & Check-in extension documentation for WooCommerce describes scanning and validating tickets with a mobile camera “(no app required).” That wording applies to that extension, not to WooCommerce core or every WordPress ticketing plugin.
- HTTPS on the check-in page. The Orange Cat listing states that the check-in page must be served over HTTPS because browsers require a secure origin before they grant camera access.
- A phone with a working camera and a current browser. The sources describe no dedicated scanner hardware. A phone camera is the scanner.
- Staff accounts with limited access. Each plugin controls this differently, as covered below.
- Server-generated QR codes. Tickets have to carry a code the browser can read. The Events Calendar documentation notes a server-side dependency that can stop codes from generating, covered under the comparison.
Setting it up before event day
- Choose a plugin whose current listing or documentation explicitly describes browser scanning. Feature descriptions change between versions, so confirm them against the version you will install rather than against an older tutorial.
- Create a test ticket and confirm it displays a QR code. If it does not, fix code generation before anything else.
- Confirm the site loads over HTTPS and that the check-in page opens on that address.
- Create staff accounts and give them only the access the plugin’s permission model requires. In Orange Cat’s case, that is a protected check-in capability for logged-in users. In the WooCommerce extension’s case, it is role-based controls.
- On the actual door phone and browser, log in as a staff account, open the check-in page, allow camera access, and scan a test ticket. Then check in a second test ticket by manual lookup.
- Test with the connection you will have on the day. If the plugin claims offline check-in, turn off mobile data and Wi-Fi, check in a ticket, restore the connection, and confirm the record syncs. If the plugin needs a live connection, plan around that.
- Keep a list of attendee emails and order numbers available for lookup, so the fallback works even when a code is unreadable.
How the documented options compare
The table compares what each vendor document says. These are documented feature descriptions, not independent tests, and no controlled performance comparison exists for these products.
| Product and source | Scanning method | Staff access | Manual fallback | Offline behavior |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Orange Cat QR Event Tickets (WordPress.org listing) | Phone camera in a mobile browser; nothing to install | Capability-protected check-in page for logged-in staff | Lookup by buyer email or order number | Advertised as offline check-in with later synchronization (vendor claim) |
| QR Code Tickets & Check-in, WooCommerce extension (extension documentation) | Mobile camera, “no app required” | Role-based controls | Manual ticket-code entry | Not stated |
| The Events Calendar with Event Tickets Plus (Knowledgebase) | Dedicated app | Permissions described; specific arrangement not stated | Not stated | Not stated |
| Event Espresso (product documentation) | Mobile app scanning | Not stated | Manual attendee lookup | Not stated |
The Events Calendar documentation is the clearest example of a dependency that can break ticket generation. It says QR codes may fail to generate if PHP’s GD extension is missing or disabled. Ask your host to confirm GD is active before you sell tickets, and treat a missing QR image on a test ticket as a server problem, not a scanning problem.

Connectivity: what offline support means here
Orange Cat’s listing advertises offline check-in with later synchronization. That claim belongs to Orange Cat’s plugin and version. It does not apply to browser scanners in general.

The question “Can we check-in QR codes when mobile is offline (not connected)?” appears in a WordPress.org support thread. An older reply in that thread, written about another plugin, said offline scanning was not available at that time. That reply is historical and plugin-specific. It tells you nothing reliable about the current behavior of any product, so verify offline support in the current documentation and then test it on your own phone.
Access and fallback at the door
Staff access
Restrict the check-in page to the staff accounts that need it. Then test the restriction: a logged-out visitor, or an account with an ordinary customer or subscriber role, should not reach the scanner. The sources describe a protected capability (Orange Cat) and role-based controls (WooCommerce extension) but do not describe how an API key or other access method would work, so confirm the exact mechanism in the plugin you choose.

Manual fallback
A scan will not always work. A ticket may be on a dark screen, a printout may be creased, or an attendee may have forgotten the code. Orange Cat’s listing describes lookup by buyer email or order number. The WooCommerce extension documentation describes manual ticket-code entry. Event Espresso documents manual attendee lookup in its mobile app. Confirm which route your plugin provides, and make sure staff can use it without asking for help.

- The camera prompt never appears, or access was refused. Confirm the page loads over HTTPS. Then open the browser’s site settings for that address, allow the camera, and reload the check-in page.
- The code is blurred or the screen is hard to read. Adjust the distance and lighting and try again. If it still fails, switch to manual lookup rather than holding up the line.
- The attendee’s ticket has no QR code. On an Events Calendar setup, check that PHP’s GD extension is active on the server.
- A staff member cannot open the check-in page. Check that the account holds the capability or role the plugin requires.
- The connection drops during the event. If the plugin is documented as offline-capable, keep scanning and let the records sync later, then confirm the sync worked. If it needs a live connection, manual lookup will also fail without one, so have a plan for check-in on paper or in a second list.
Sources and limits
- WordPress.org plugin listing for Orange Cat QR Event Tickets. Its feature statements are vendor claims, not independent testing.
- Extension documentation for QR Code Tickets & Check-in, a WooCommerce extension. It describes that extension only.
- The Events Calendar Knowledgebase article on QR codes and ticket check-in. It documents an app-based implementation and the GD dependency.
- Event Espresso product documentation on mobile app scanning and manual attendee lookup.
- A WordPress.org support thread about offline scanning. It is older and concerns a single plugin.
No independent security audit, supported-device list, adoption figure, or universal offline behavior was established for these products. Check the plugin you choose against its current documentation before event day.
