Qi is a wireless power-transfer standard developed by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC). It lets a charger send energy to a compatible phone or other device through magnetic induction, with the charger and device coordinating the transfer. A Qi logo or “compatible” claim alone does not prove certification; check the exact product in the WPC’s certified-products database.
What Qi wireless charging means
Qi names a standardized wireless charging system, not a particular charger brand. A Qi charging pad or stand acts as the transmitter; a phone or other device with a compatible receiving coil takes in the energy. The standard is intended to support interoperability between certified products from different manufacturers.
The WPC says more than 13,000 Qi-certified products are on the market. That count appears on its overview page, which does not give a publication date for the figure.

Qi uses magnetic induction. Alternating current in the charger’s transmitter coil creates a changing magnetic field. When a compatible device’s receiver coil is positioned in that field, voltage is induced in the receiver. The device can use that electrical energy or direct it to charging its battery.

The transfer is coordinated, not simply a matter of two coils being nearby. The phone sends control signals to the charging station, including a signal that tells it to stop transmitting when the battery is full. The WPC describes the process in its How Qi Works explainer.
Qi versions and what they change
Qi launched in 2010. The WPC describes Qi v2.0 as launching in 2023 and bringing Qi2, including magnetic attachment and alignment and 15-watt charging. Its standards overview identifies Qi v2.2.1, branded Qi2 25W, as launching in July 2025.

The WPC’s specification-history page records revisions through Qi 2.3, while its public overview highlights Qi v2.2.1/Qi2 25W. Because those pages do not present the same version as their headline, it is safer to consult the WPC’s live specifications information for the status of a particular specification than to treat one page as a definitive statement of the latest version. The detailed latest specification is member-only, according to the WPC.

What Qi2 25W does—and does not—promise
The WPC says Qi2 25W can charge a smartphone battery from 0% to 50% in about 30 minutes. This is the consortium’s general claim, not a guaranteed result for every phone and charger. A device must support the relevant charging capabilities to benefit from them, and a charger’s advertised maximum does not establish the speed a particular phone will achieve.

In an announcement dated July 23, 2025, the WPC said 14 devices completed Qi2 25W certification testing during a limited launch. That figure describes the devices tested in that launch, not the total number of compatible devices now available.
How to check whether a phone and charger will work together
- Look up the exact charger and device. Search the product names or model numbers in the WPC Qi-certified products database. A listing is stronger evidence of certification than a logo on packaging.
- Confirm the Qi generation and power support. Check the specifications for both products. The charger cannot make a phone support a newer Qi generation or use the charger’s full advertised power if the phone does not support it.
- Check magnetic alignment separately. If you want magnetic attachment or alignment, verify that the phone and charger support the relevant Qi2 capability. A charger being wireless or Qi-compatible does not, by itself, establish magnetic attachment.
- Check the charger’s power-adapter requirement. Read the charger’s product documentation to determine what power adapter it requires; the WPC certification listing alone does not establish that requirement.
What certification tells you
According to the WPC, Qi-certified products undergo independent laboratory testing for safety, interoperability, and energy efficiency. Certification is evidence that a product was tested against the standard; it does not guarantee a particular charging speed in every device-and-charger combination.

The WPC warns that a Qi logo can be printed illegally. “Qi compatible” or “works with Qi” wording should not be treated as proof that a product is Qi certified. Use the WPC’s database to verify the exact product.

Match the charger to the device you plan to charge rather than choosing by the highest wattage printed on the box. For a specific phone, prioritize a verified certification listing, the Qi generation and power the phone supports, magnetic alignment if you need it, and the charger’s required power adapter. A Qi-certified pad or stand is the transmitter in this system; confirm its exact model in the WPC database before relying on a certification claim.
