For numeric RGB, the default channel range is 0–1; call turtle.colormode(255) before using familiar 0–255 values. Turtle does not define a separate universal color-name list: its named colors come from Tk.
Python Turtle colors list: where to find the full list
Turtle color strings follow Tk color specifications, so the authoritative named-color reference is Tk’s color manual, not a Python-specific Turtle list. The Tk 9.0.2 color reference lists symbolic names and their 8-bit RGB values. It includes forms such as alice blue and AliceBlue, along with numbered variants such as aquamarine1 through aquamarine4.
Python’s Turtle documentation describes accepted color strings as Tk color specifications, with examples including "red" and "#33cc8c". The Python reference cited here is for Python 3.15.0rc3; the named-color table cited here is Tk 9.0.2. Check the Tk reference that applies to the Tk version installed on your system if a particular name matters.
How do I use RGB colors in Turtle?
Use an RGB tuple or pass the three channel values as separate arguments to pencolor() or fillcolor(). Turtle’s default color mode is 1.0, so each numeric channel must be between 0 and 1. For example:

turtle.pencolor(240, 160, 80)
turtle.fillcolor((50, 193, 143))Passing values such as (240, 160, 80) while the mode is still 1.0 is outside the allowed range and raises a TurtleGraphicsError. The documented modes are 1.0 and 255; channel values must fit whichever mode is active.

How do I set a hex color in Python Turtle?
Pass a Tk hex color string, including the leading #, to a color-setting method. For example, "#33cc8c" is a documented Turtle color-string example:

turtle.pencolor("#33cc8c")Hex strings are color specifications, not numeric RGB arguments, so changing colormode is not needed for this use. Named strings are convenient to read; hex strings and numeric RGB make the intended color more explicit. Both string forms still follow Tk’s color-string rules.

Which Turtle color method should I use?

These methods accept color strings; pencolor() and fillcolor() also accept RGB tuples or three separate numeric channel arguments. The Python Turtle reference documents the method signatures and color behavior.
What does turtle.colormode(255) do?
turtle.colormode(255) sets the numeric RGB channel range to 0–255 rather than the default 0–1. Use it before sending 8-bit RGB channel values; it does not create or change the available Tk color names, and it is not required for named or hex color strings.

If Turtle will not open
Turtle graphics depends on tkinter. Python’s documentation notes that some Linux distributions and other platforms package the optional Tk interface separately. If the graphics window fails to launch, check whether Tk support is installed for your Python environment; this is separate from choosing a color.
