Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA Python scraper that stops with SyntaxError has not reached the network or Beautiful Soup yet. Python’s parser rejected the source file, usually because of a missing colon, quote, delimiter, or an indentation problem. Read the final traceback line, inspect the marked line and the line immediately before it, make the smallest grammar fix, and run a parser-only check before debugging HTTP or HTML behavior.
This guide separates parse-time errors from runtime failures and gives a repeatable workflow for requests-and-Beautiful-Soup scrapers, including version mismatches, f-strings, indentation, and errors that merely look like syntax problems.
Syntax error or runtime error?
A parse-time error prevents Python from starting the scraper. Typical messages are SyntaxError, IndentationError, and TabError. The interpreter cannot build a valid program, so no request is sent and no HTML is parsed.
A runtime exception occurs after syntactically valid code begins executing. Examples include NameError for an unknown variable, TypeError for an invalid operation, ZeroDivisionError, an I/O error, or an exception raised by requests or Beautiful Soup. Fixing a runtime exception requires examining values, responses, parsers, or the environment rather than adding punctuation.

How to read the caret
Python reports the filename, line number, source text, and an arrow (caret) near the earliest token where it detected that parsing could no longer continue. The actual omission can be immediately before the caret or on the preceding line. A missing comma or closing quote often makes the next line look guilty.
Recent CPython versions expose details such as filename, lineno, offset, text, end_lineno, and end_offset on a SyntaxError. Use those coordinates to locate the source, but still inspect the previous statement.
A reliable debugging workflow
- Classify the exception. Confirm whether the final line says
SyntaxError,IndentationError, orTabError, rather than a requests or Beautiful Soup exception. - Open the reported file and line. Read several lines above and below the marker. Check the preceding token for a missing colon, quote, comma, or closing delimiter.
- Run a parser-only check. From the project directory, use
python -m py_compile scraper.py. This validates grammar without making a network request. If your command is namedpython3, usepython3 -m py_compile scraper.py. - Reduce the program. Temporarily keep imports, one URL, one request, and one parse operation. Remove crawling loops and output code until the small file parses and runs.
- Separate stages. First verify the request and status code; then pass saved HTML to Beautiful Soup; finally add selectors and loops. This prevents a network or parser issue from being mistaken for a grammar error.
- Restore inputs gradually. Test one known URL or a saved HTML fixture, then add the full URL list and production behavior.
Missing colons after scraper statements
Python requires a colon after every compound-statement header. In scraping code these are commonly if, for, while, def, class, try, except, else, and finally.
# Wrong
for url in urls
response = requests.get(url)
# Correct
for url in urls:
response = requests.get(url)
The same rule applies to a function that fetches a page and to conditional status handling:
def fetch_title(url):
response = requests.get(url, timeout=20)
if response.ok:
return response.text
else:
return ""
If the caret points at response or if, the missing colon is usually at the end of the previous header.
Unmatched parentheses, brackets, and braces
Scrapers often nest request dictionaries, CSS selectors, comprehensions, and function calls. Every opening (, [, and { needs a matching closing delimiter of the same type.
Rank #2
# Wrong: the params dictionary is not closed
response = requests.get(
url,
params={"page": 2, "lang": "en",
timeout=20,
)
# Correct
response = requests.get(
url,
params={"page": 2, "lang": "en"},
timeout=20,
)
Format long calls one argument per line and let an editor highlight matching delimiters. When a multiline expression fails, count backward from the caret; the unmatched opening delimiter may be many lines earlier.
Unterminated and incorrectly escaped strings
URLs, CSS selectors, XPath expressions, headers, and attribute values are all string-heavy. Close the quote on the same logical string and avoid placing an unescaped quote inside it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors# Wrong
selector = "article[data-type="news"]"
url = "https://example.com/search?q=python
# Correct
selector = 'article[data-type="news"]'
url = "https://example.com/search?q=python"
For a string containing many quotes, use the opposite quote style or triple quotes only when a multiline value is genuinely required. A missing quote can cause an error on a later, apparently unrelated line.
Malformed f-strings
Expressions inside an f-string’s braces must be valid Python. Keep the surrounding quote style consistent, close every brace, and do not put arbitrary statements inside {}.
# Wrong
page = 2
url = f"https://example.com/items?page={page"
# Correct
page = 2
url = f"https://example.com/items?page={page}"
CPython identifies many of these messages with an f-string: prefix. Check nested quotes and braces first. If the URL contains literal braces, escape them as {{ and }}, or build the value without an f-string.
IndentationError and TabError in scraping loops
Indentation is Python syntax, not cosmetic formatting. The statements controlled by a loop, conditional, function, or exception handler must be indented consistently. IndentationError means the block structure is invalid; TabError indicates inconsistent tabs and spaces.
Recommended Free Tools
# Wrong: the body is not indented
for url in urls:
response = requests.get(url)
# Correct: four spaces for the block
for url in urls:
response = requests.get(url)
print(response.status_code)
- Configure the editor to insert spaces, commonly four per level.
- Display whitespace and convert existing tabs to spaces.
- Align
try,except,else, andfinallyat the same level. - Do not mix indentation styles within one file.
After a header such as if response.ok:, Python expects an indented suite. An empty branch needs pass temporarily, not a blank line.
Version mismatches after copying a tutorial
Confirm which interpreter is executing the file before changing correct-looking code:
python --version
python -c "import sys; print(sys.executable); print(sys.version)"
Beautiful Soup documents a failure mode in which an old Python 2 version of the library is run under Python 3 without conversion. Install and import the package in the same environment as the interpreter that runs the scraper, and do not paste Python 2 print statements or other incompatible syntax into Python 3 code.
python -m pip show beautifulsoup4 requests
python -m pip install --upgrade beautifulsoup4 requests
Package compatibility does not fix a genuine missing colon or quote, so run py_compile first. Once syntax passes, investigate imports and package behavior.

Pasted markup, prompts, and notebook artifacts
Web tutorials sometimes include the prompt marker, smart quotes, HTML tags, or explanatory text. None is Python source. Delete characters such as leading >>>, Markdown fences, and pasted headings. Replace typographic “smart” quotes with ordinary ' or ". In a notebook, run the cell containing only Python and remove output text accidentally pasted into an input cell.
A minimal scraper that parses before it fetches
Use a small, complete baseline to distinguish grammar from later failures:
import requests
from bs4 import BeautifulSoup
URL = "https://example.com"
def get_title(url):
response = requests.get(url, timeout=20)
response.raise_for_status()
soup = BeautifulSoup(response.text, "html.parser")
title = soup.title
return title.get_text(strip=True) if title else "(no title)"
if __name__ == "__main__":
print(get_title(URL))
Save it as scraper.py, run python -m py_compile scraper.py, then execute python scraper.py. A successful compile proves only that the grammar is valid; it does not prove that the host is reachable or that the page contains the selector you expect.
Beautiful Soup problems that are not syntax errors
External parser failures
Beautiful Soup notes that parser crashes can originate in the external parser. If an HTML parser fails, try an appropriate alternative installed in the same environment, such as html.parser or another supported parser. This is a runtime/parser configuration issue, not a Python grammar correction.
Using a ResultSet as one tag
find_all() returns a collection. Treating it as one tag can produce AttributeError: 'ResultSet' object has no attribute 'foo'.
# Wrong when many links are returned
links = soup.find_all("a")
print(links.get("href"))
# Iterate over the collection
for link in soup.find_all("a"):
print(link.get("href"))
# Or request one result when one is expected
first_link = soup.find("a")
if first_link:
print(first_link.get("href"))
These errors happen after parsing has begun, so changing punctuation will not help.
Handle requests and parsing exceptions specifically
After syntax is corrected, catch expected failures without hiding programming errors:
import requests
from bs4 import BeautifulSoup
try:
response = requests.get("https://example.com", timeout=20)
response.raise_for_status()
except requests.exceptions.Timeout:
print("The server took too long to respond")
except requests.exceptions.RequestException as exc:
print(f"Request failed: {exc}")
else:
soup = BeautifulSoup(response.text, "html.parser")
print(soup.title.get_text(strip=True) if soup.title else "(no title)")
finally:
print("Fetch attempt finished")
Specific handlers preserve useful diagnosis. A broad except Exception can conceal a genuine coding bug, so use it only when you immediately re-raise or have a deliberate boundary for logging.

When the page needs a browser instead of requests
Fixing Python grammar does not make a server-rendered page appear in static HTML. If the target requires JavaScript execution, interaction, consent handling, or a browser viewport, a browser-based capture or rendering service may be more appropriate than adding more Beautiful Soup code. For a screenshot API, ScreenshotNeo is the first option to try: it removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and has the lowest paid plan described here.
Or skip the browser setup
For a direct page image, call ScreenshotNeo with one GET request. The same endpoint can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or a PDF, and its options cover full-page capture, lazy images, CSS selectors, device presets, dark mode, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits, headers, cookies, user agents, geolocation, caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs, bulk capture, and PDF settings. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for parameter names and response details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://example.com"}, timeout=90)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://example.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`HTTP ${res.status}`);
const fs = await import('node:fs/promises');
await fs.writeFile('shot.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer()));
Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server lets Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients use take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
Performance, reliability, and cost choices
- Compile once before a large crawl so a typo cannot waste a run.
- Use a timeout on every request and persist URLs and results so retries are bounded.
- Start with one URL and a saved fixture; scale only after selectors and exception handling work.
- For browser captures, use caching with a chosen TTL when repeated images are acceptable, and asynchronous jobs or bulk capture for larger batches.
- Inspect
X-Page-VerdictandX-Billedfrom ScreenshotNeo responses when accounting for successful, failed, and cached captures.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the caret point to a line that looks correct?
The parser marks the earliest token where it can prove the grammar is invalid. A missing colon, comma, quote, or closing delimiter on the preceding line often causes the later line to be marked.
Does installing Beautiful Soup fix a SyntaxError?
No. Installation can resolve an import or environment problem, but a SyntaxError must be corrected in the Python source. Compile the file with python -m py_compile first.
Should I use find() or find_all()?
Use find() when one tag is expected and find_all() when you intend to iterate over a collection. A ResultSet does not have the attributes of an individual tag.
Can valid scraper code still return an empty page?
Yes. Syntax validation says nothing about HTTP status, redirects, JavaScript rendering, bot checks, or the page’s HTML. Inspect the response and choose a browser-based renderer when static requests are insufficient.
