Capture a page protected by HTTP authentication
This Python example uses Playwright’s synchronous API. Replace the URL and placeholders with a site and credentials you are authorized to use. The example combines the official authentication and screenshot workflows; it has not been executed as a test.

browser.close()The credentials belong on browser.new_context(), before the page is created and navigated. This configures requests made by pages in that context. See Playwright’s Python network guide and screenshot guide.
Scope credentials to the protected origin
When you know the site’s origin, set it explicitly. The origin format is scheme://host:port; include the port when the site uses a non-default one.

)By default, Playwright sends the credentials after a 401 response containing a WWW-Authenticate header. Its browser API also documents an always send mode, which sends credentials on each request. Without an origin restriction, credentials may be sent to any server after an unauthorized response, so limit their scope when practical. Check the installed version’s Browser API reference for the current accepted fields and behavior.
For multiple protected origins, the API accepts an array of credential records and selects the first matching entry. A record without an origin can match any request, so avoid an unrestricted entry when credentials should only apply to known sites.

Choose what the screenshot returns
Viewport or full page
By default, page.screenshot(path="screenshot.png") captures the current viewport. Set full_page=True to capture the entire scrollable page.
Save to a file or keep bytes in memory
Passing path writes the image to disk. If you omit it, page.screenshot() returns image bytes that you can pass to another library or upload without first creating a file:

image_bytes = page.screenshot(full_page=True)Capture one element
Use a locator’s screenshot method when you need a specific element rather than the whole page:
page.locator("main article").screenshot(path="article.png")The selector is an example; replace it with one that matches the target page. Playwright documents screenshot options and recommends locator-based screenshots over the older ElementHandle approach. HTTP authentication is not application login
http_credentials handles HTTP authentication challenges. It does not sign in to a website’s application form or restore an existing browser session. For sites whose login state is held in cookies or other browser storage, use Playwright’s saved authenticated-state workflow or automate the login form instead. Saved state can contain cookies and headers that allow someone to impersonate the account: keep it out of version control and treat it like a password. See the Playwright authentication guide.
Common problems and fixes
- The browser still shows an authentication prompt or an unauthorized page: Confirm the username and password, the target URL, and that the site uses HTTP authentication. Make sure the credentials are on the browser context that created the page, before navigation.
- Credentials are set on an API request context, but page navigation is unauthenticated:
APIRequestContextcredentials apply to API requests, not browser page requests. Sethttp_credentialsonbrowser.new_context()instead. See the APIRequest reference. - The site uses a normal login page: HTTP credentials will not complete that application login. Automate the form or initialize the browser context with saved authenticated state.
- The screenshot is only what is visible on screen: Add
full_page=Trueto capture the full scrollable page. - You need an image for further processing rather than a file: Omit the
pathargument and retain the bytes returned bypage.screenshot(). - A screenshot option or credential field is rejected: Check the documentation for the Playwright version installed in your environment; API options can vary by version.
