For most website images created or edited as pixels, start with Pillow. It can create raster canvases, resize and composite images, and save supported formats. If your source artwork is SVG and you need a PNG or another supported conversion, use CairoSVG. They solve different problems, and a workflow can use both: convert the vector artwork with CairoSVG, then make pixel-level edits with Pillow.

Neither choice means every dependency is written in Python or that every file format works in every installation. Pillow’s available formats depend on the installed build; CairoSVG has native system dependencies and documented SVG feature limitations. Check these against the runtime where you will generate the site assets.

Choose a package by the kind of image you have

Task Best starting point Check before shipping
Create a raster canvas, resize or composite images, generate thumbnails, or save a supported raster format Pillow Installed format support, output encoding requirements, and input-size limits
Convert existing SVG artwork to PNG, PDF, PS, or SVG CairoSVG SVG feature coverage, native dependencies, target platform, and license terms
Rasterize SVG and then manipulate the resulting pixels CairoSVG followed by Pillow Both packages’ dependencies and the actual output at the intended dimensions

This is a role-based choice, not a performance ranking. Pillow is a general raster-image workbench; CairoSVG is specifically for SVG conversion. Neither package supplies design direction or guarantees delivery infrastructure, and the cited documentation does not establish support for every modern image format or SVG feature.

Create a website image with Pillow

Pillow is the maintained PIL fork described by its project as a Python image-processing library. Its image API includes constructing images, processing and compositing them, and generating effects such as gradients and noise. It is a practical choice when a script or application needs to create or transform raster assets rather than render a web page.

Install and generate a simple PNG

Install the package in the same Python environment that runs your script:

python -m pip install Pillow

This complete example creates a 1200-by-630 RGB canvas with a background gradient and centered text, then saves a PNG. Replace the sample copy with your own; the default font is used so the example does not depend on a separate font file.

from PIL import Image, ImageDraw, ImageFont

width, height = 1200, 630
image = Image.new("RGB", (width, height))
pixels = image.load()

# Paint a vertical blue-to-violet gradient.
for y in range(height):
    t = y / (height - 1)
    red = int(25 + (74 - 25) * t)
    green = int(91 + (45 - 91) * t)
    blue = int(190 + (160 - 190) * t)
    for x in range(width):
        pixels[x, y] = (red, green, blue)

draw = ImageDraw.Draw(image)
font = ImageFont.load_default()
headline = "A generated website image"
bounds = draw.textbbox((0, 0), headline, font=font)
text_width = bounds[2] - bounds[0]
text_height = bounds[3] - bounds[1]
draw.text(
    ((width - text_width) / 2, (height - text_height) / 2),
    headline,
    fill="white",
    font=font,
)
image.save("website-image.png", format="PNG")

The result is a PNG file in the script’s current working directory. This example is intentionally small in scope: Pillow draws pixels and encodes an image, but it is not a browser layout engine. For more polished typography, use a font file available to your application and measure the rendered text at the intended output size.

Resize or create a thumbnail

For an existing image, Pillow documents thumbnail workflows. A thumbnail operation can fit an image within a bounding box while maintaining its aspect ratio; choose the resampling and output format deliberately for your use case. Confirm the exact supported format and encoding options in the installed build using the Pillow format handbook.

Save to memory or work with uploads

Pillow accepts filenames, path-like objects, and file-like objects. The file-handling documentation also describes writing image data to an in-memory BytesIO object. That can be useful when an application needs bytes rather than a file path; how those bytes are returned in an HTTP response is up to the surrounding application. See Pillow’s file-handling documentation for the supported patterns.

Protect image-processing services from oversized input

When processing user-supplied images, treat dimensions and memory use as a security and reliability concern. Pillow documents a decompression-bomb warning and error behavior because a compressed image can expand to consume excessive resources; its API uses a pixel-count threshold. Do not disable that protection casually. Review the current Image API reference and set application-level upload and resource limits appropriate to your service.

Convert SVG artwork with CairoSVG

Use CairoSVG when the input is SVG artwork and the goal is conversion to a raster or another listed output. Its Python module exposes functions such as svg2png, and its command-line tool can convert an SVG file to PNG. It is not a replacement for Pillow when you need general pixel-level operations.

Install and convert from Python

The documented pip package name is cairosvg. Depending on the operating system and environment, installation may also require native components or build tools. Check the current platform-specific instructions in the CairoSVG documentation before adding it to a deployment image.

python -m pip install cairosvg

With CairoSVG and its required system dependencies installed, this example reads an SVG file and writes a PNG:

import cairosvg

cairosvg.svg2png(
    url="logo.svg",
    write_to="logo.png",
    output_width=1200,
)

The input path must identify an SVG file accessible to the process. The output width requests a raster width of 1200 pixels; validate the resulting dimensions and appearance in your actual asset pipeline.

Use the command line

The CLI is convenient in a build step when you do not need Python-side control:

cairosvg logo.svg -o logo.png

Use the CLI name and options supported by the version installed in the target environment. The documentation lists SVG 1.1 conversion to PNG, PDF, PS, or SVG, but that does not mean every feature in every SVG implementation is supported.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Check SVG compatibility and licensing

CairoSVG’s documentation identifies limitations involving ICC color schemes, color interpolation and gamma correction for external raster images, and only a subset of SVG filters. If the source artwork relies on these features, render representative files in the deployment environment and inspect the output rather than assuming identical rendering. The documentation describes CairoSVG as LGPLv3 licensed; review the license terms for your distribution model.

Combine CairoSVG and Pillow when the workflow needs both

A common two-stage pipeline is to rasterize a vector asset, then use Pillow to resize, composite, or otherwise manipulate the pixels. This follows the documented roles of the two packages; it is not a claim that every SVG can be rendered identically or that this combination is required.

from io import BytesIO
import cairosvg
from PIL import Image

# Rasterize SVG bytes in memory, then create a web-sized PNG.
svg_bytes = open("badge.svg", "rb").read()
png_bytes = cairosvg.svg2png(bytestring=svg_bytes, output_width=800)

with Image.open(BytesIO(png_bytes)) as image:
    image.thumbnail((400, 400))
    image.save("badge-small.png", format="PNG")

This flow avoids an intermediate raster file between the conversion and resize stages. It still needs CairoSVG’s native components, and the final result should be checked for transparency, dimensions, color, and SVG-feature fidelity.

Deployment, reliability, and cost considerations

Verify the exact runtime, not just your laptop

Pillow and CairoSVG have different installation concerns. Pillow’s available formats can vary with the installed build and its dependencies, so verify the formats needed by your output pipeline. CairoSVG documents support for Linux, macOS, and Windows, but native Cairo and FFI-related components and platform-specific installation needs can affect whether installation succeeds. Pin and test the dependencies in the same type of environment used for production.

Measure resource use for your inputs

Image dimensions, decoded pixel count, and the number of simultaneous jobs affect memory and processing demand. This matters particularly for services accepting uploads: enforce reasonable input limits, handle Pillow’s documented decompression-bomb warnings and errors, and test large or malformed files. Neither package documentation cited here provides a universal throughput figure, so benchmark your own representative assets if processing time or capacity is a requirement.

There is no package price comparison to make

The cited package documentation does not establish a paid plan or per-image charge for either library. Your operational cost depends on the environment and workload you choose, including compute, storage, and deployment dependencies; do not treat the absence of a package price as a claim that the full application pipeline is cost-free.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • Pillow cannot save the requested format: Confirm that the installed build supports the format and that the requested encoder is available. Consult the format handbook and test in the target runtime.
  • The generated image uses an unexpected font or text size: The sample uses Pillow’s default font. Load a font file available to the process, then measure text against the actual font and output dimensions.
  • An upload triggers a decompression-bomb warning or error: The decoded image may exceed Pillow’s configured pixel-count threshold. Check the API guidance, limit input size and dimensions, and only adjust safeguards after assessing the memory risk.
  • CairoSVG installation fails on a server: The pip package alone may not satisfy native dependency or build-tool requirements. Follow the installation instructions for the operating system and verify required Cairo and FFI components in the deployment image.
  • An SVG’s colors, filters, or external raster images look different: The SVG may rely on behavior CairoSVG documents as unsupported or limited. Simplify or revise the source artwork, or use a conversion approach that supports the specific features required; inspect output from representative files.
  • The output has the wrong dimensions or appears blurry: Check the requested output size and the source artwork’s aspect ratio, then inspect the saved file at its actual display size. Raster output cannot retain SVG’s resolution-independent character.

If by “website image” you mean a screenshot of a live page

That is a different job from generating an image with Pillow or converting SVG with CairoSVG. A screenshot tool renders a URL in a browser and captures the page; it does not replace either package for drawing or post-processing raster graphics. If that is the asset you need, ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first: it is a website screenshot API and MCP server, with cookie-banner and popup cleanup and billing only for clean shots.

Or skip the browser setup

One GET request can return a screenshot. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API options.
