In seven days, you can bridge basic Python and a first, small machine-learning workflow: prepare data, define a prediction task, fit a baseline model, evaluate it, and explain what it does not yet prove. This is a focused introduction—not a promise of ML mastery or job readiness.
The plan below is an editorial sequence based on the topics in Google’s Machine Learning Crash Course and Inria’s scikit-learn course. Neither organization prescribes this exact seven-day schedule.
What you should know before you start
You do not need prior machine-learning knowledge. You will make faster progress, however, if basic Python syntax and a little math already feel familiar. Google recommends comfort with variables, linear equations, function graphs, histograms, and statistical means; it also says learners should be good programmers and ideally have some Python experience. Inria expects basic Python, including variables, functions, and imports. It recommends familiarity with NumPy, pandas, and Matplotlib, but does not require it.
If Python is the main obstacle, use the official Python Tutorial as a language reference before or alongside this plan. Google also recommends NumPy and pandas tutorials as prework for learners new to those libraries. You need not master either library before beginning, but you should be ready to work with data in arrays or tables.

Set up without letting tools become the project
For Google’s programming exercises, you can use Colaboratory in a modern browser; local software installation is not required for that route. The exercises use Python and Keras. Inria’s scikit-learn course offers executable notebooks and a static site, with an interactive Binder option. Its course page describes the latest MOOC version as self-paced and continuously updated to work with the latest scikit-learn.
Choose one environment and keep it for the week. The point is to learn the workflow, not to spend the first day comparing editors or installing multiple libraries. If you prefer working locally, follow the setup instructions for your chosen course or library rather than assuming that browser instructions also apply to a local installation.
Your seven-day learning plan
Day 1: Refresh the Python you will use
Review variables, collections, loops, functions, and imports. Practise reading a short function and tracing how its inputs become outputs. Make a brief list of gaps that slow you down; look up those items as needed rather than trying to relearn all of Python in one day.

Day 2: Work with a small dataset
Use NumPy and pandas concepts to load or inspect a small dataset, check its columns and values, and make a simple transformation. Focus on understanding what each row represents and how the data is organized. This preparation matters because a model’s input is data in a representation you must be able to inspect and reason about.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDay 3: Turn a question into a prediction task
Choose a small question that can be expressed as a prediction. Identify the target—the value you want the model to predict—and the features—the information supplied to make that prediction. Decide whether the target makes the task classification (choosing a category) or regression (predicting a numerical value). Keep the question narrow enough that you can explain the data and result.
Day 4: Fit a baseline model
Train one simple model with a beginner-friendly library. Inria’s course is an in-depth introduction to predictive modeling with scikit-learn, so it is a suitable place to learn that library’s workflow. Treat this first model as a baseline: its purpose is to give you something concrete to evaluate, not to establish that the problem is solved.

Day 5: Evaluate on data the model did not train on
Use a held-out evaluation rather than judging the model only on the examples it learned from. Choose a metric that fits the task and describe in plain language what that metric means for your question. A score is not self-explanatory: its usefulness depends on the task, the data, and the consequences of different kinds of errors.
Pay attention to generalization and overfitting. A model can fit its training examples well yet perform poorly on new ones. Google’s course covers datasets, generalization, overfitting, and classification metrics, making these useful concepts to study alongside your evaluation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Day 6: Inspect the process, not just the score
Look for ways the data or modeling choices could mislead you. Consider whether preprocessing is needed, whether the model choice fits the task, what kinds of examples it gets wrong, and how you would interpret its predictions. Inria’s course explicitly addresses preprocessing, model choice, failure modes, and interpretation. These questions help you learn more than repeatedly changing a model in pursuit of a higher score.

Day 7: Write up what you learned and choose what comes next
Summarize the work in a short note or notebook with the following points:
- The prediction question and target.
- The data used and the features supplied.
- The baseline model you fitted.
- How you evaluated it and what the metric means in context.
- Limitations, errors, or uncertainties you noticed.
- The next concept or skill you need to study.
This write-up makes it easier to distinguish what you actually demonstrated from what remains unknown. It also gives you a practical starting point for continued study.

| Resource | Best fit | Practice format | Starting guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Machine Learning Crash Course | Build conceptual breadth, from model and data fundamentals to broader real-world ML topics. | Programming exercises using Python and Keras, launchable in Colaboratory from a modern browser without local installation. | Recommends Python and math comfort; suggests NumPy and pandas prework for learners new to those libraries. |
| Inria scikit-learn course | Learn predictive modeling with scikit-learn, including preprocessing, model choice, failure modes, and interpretation. | Executable notebooks, a static site, and an interactive Binder option. | Expects basic Python; NumPy, pandas, and Matplotlib experience is recommended, not required. The latest MOOC version is described as self-paced and continuously updated to work with the latest scikit-learn. |
If you need more conceptual context, start with Google. If your next goal is to practise a scikit-learn predictive-modeling workflow, choose Inria. You can use both; there is no need to treat them as competing versions of the same course.
Once you are ready to use the library directly, the scikit-learn Getting Started documentation is the official reference for its basic workflow. The Python Tutorial remains useful for language questions, but it is not an ML curriculum.
What seven days can—and cannot—do
This plan aims to help you complete and explain one small evaluated modeling workflow. It does not establish mastery, prove that a model will work in a different setting, or substitute for sustained practice. Keep the task small, make the evaluation understandable, and use the limitations you identify to choose what to learn next.
