Use enumerate() to get an item and its position in the same Python loop: for index, item in enumerate(items):. It starts counting at 0; pass start=1 when you want to label the first item 1. That changes the counter, not which item iteration begins with.
Get each item and its index with enumerate()
Python’s enumerate(iterable, start=0) produces pairs containing a count and each value from the iterable. Unpack those two values directly in the loop:
names = ["Ada", "Grace", "Linus"]
for index, name in enumerate(names):
print(index, name)
# 0 Ada
# 1 Grace
# 2 LinusThe first loop variable receives the count; the second receives the item. Choose descriptive names such as row, item, or name for the value. The Python tutorial describes this as retrieving a sequence’s position and corresponding value together with enumerate() (Python tutorial: Looping Techniques).
Start numbering at 1 when you need a human-facing label
Pass start=1 to make the first yielded count 1:
for number, name in enumerate(names, start=1):
print(number, name)
# 1 Ada
# 2 Grace
# 3 LinusThis is useful for displayed item numbers or line numbers. If the number is for presentation rather than a zero-based position, naming it number or line_number can make that distinction clear.

What start changes—and what it does not
The start argument initializes the counter. It does not skip elements or tell Python to begin at an item offset. With enumerate(items, start=1), iteration still visits the first item; that item is simply paired with the count 1. The built-in reference gives the equivalent logic as initializing a counter to start and then iterating over every value from the iterable (Python built-in functions documentation).
If you need to begin at a later element, use a suitable slice or iterator operation to select the portion to iterate over. Treat choosing the starting count and choosing which elements to visit as separate decisions.

Choose the loop that matches what you need
- You only need the values: Use
for item in items:. There is no need to retrieve a position you will not use. - You need each value and its position: Use
for index, item in enumerate(items):. - You need a one-based display label: Use
enumerate(items, start=1)and name the counter to reflect its role. - You need to skip initial elements: Select the portion to iterate over separately; changing
startalone does not skip anything.
Avoid common enumerate() mistakes
Unpacking the wrong number of values
Each value produced by enumerate() is a pair: the count and the item. Unpack it into two variables, or bind the pair to one variable if you intend to use it as a pair. Trying to unpack it into a different number of variables does not match that shape.
Maintaining a manual counter unnecessarily
A separate counter requires you to initialize and update state yourself. When every iteration needs both a count and a value, enumerate() expresses that pairing directly.

Calling a one-based label an index
With start=1, the counter is a one-based label, not the item’s usual zero-based sequence position. Use a name such as number when that is what the value represents, so later code does not mistake a display label for a position.
Assuming enumerate() snapshots a collection
enumerate() pairs counts with values as they are obtained from the iterable; do not assume it takes a snapshot of the input. The effect of changing a collection during traversal depends on the iterable and the operations performed, so avoid relying on general mutation behavior without checking the specific case.
