How you should start learning Python depends on whether you have programmed before. If you are completely new to programming, begin with a guided beginner lesson that explains basic programming ideas as well as Python. If you already know another language, the official Python tutorial is a good way to learn Python’s syntax and distinctive features.

Choose a learning path that matches your experience

If you have never programmed

Start with an interactive lesson in your browser or a beginner-first book or course. The official Python tutorial is useful, but it is not designed as a first programming course: the Python documentation for version 3.14.7 says, “This tutorial is designed for programmers that are new to the Python language, not beginners who are new to programming.” It expects you to understand basic programming ideas already.

For a first hands-on step, open the LearnPython.org interactive tutorial and run its “Hello, World!” example. Change the text and run it again. Then work through small examples that introduce variables, printing and input, arithmetic, and strings. Once those feel familiar, move on to conditions and loops, followed by lists and functions.

This is a practical progression, not a mandatory syllabus. Focus on being able to explain what a short program does, then change it and see what happens. Small exercises are more useful at this stage than trying to memorize every Python feature.

If you already know another programming language

Work through The Python Tutorial with an interpreter available so you can run and modify its examples. It introduces core language concepts, while the broader Python documentation provides the language and library references to consult as your questions become more specific. The tutorial says it is not comprehensive, so treat it as an introduction rather than a complete reference to every feature or library.

Start in a browser or install Python

Use a browser lesson for the quickest start

LearnPython.org provides interactive lessons in the browser, beginning with “Hello, World!” and continuing through variables, lists, conditions, loops, functions, dictionaries, modules and packages, and input/output. This route lets you try code without first setting up a local editor.

Install Python when you want to save local programs

When you are ready to save and run files on your computer, install the Python interpreter using the platform-specific guidance linked from Python.org’s getting-started page. Choose a text editor or an integrated development environment (IDE) to write your files. Python.org describes installation as generally straightforward and points beginners to installation notes and editor options.

You do not need a special computer, paid editor, or accessory to begin. The Python Wiki’s Beginner’s Guide names IDLE, which is bundled with Python, and Thonny as editor options, but the page carries an archival notice; check current platform instructions and software details before relying on its third-party recommendations.

Practice the fundamentals in small steps

Build each new idea into a tiny program. For example, after learning input and variables, write a program that asks for a name and prints a greeting. Then alter it: ask for a number, do a simple calculation, or use a condition to choose between two messages. The aim is to connect each new concept to something you can run and inspect.

  • Input, output, and variables: display a result, ask the user for information, and store a value so the program can use it again.
  • Numbers and strings: try arithmetic with numbers and join or display pieces of text.
  • Conditions: make a program choose what to do based on a value or answer.
  • Loops: repeat an action instead of writing the same instruction over and over.
  • Lists: keep several related values together and work with them as a group.
  • Functions: give a reusable piece of work a name so a program can call it when needed.

When a program does not work, read the error message and check the line it identifies. An error is a clue about what Python could not interpret or do; fixing mistakes is part of learning, not evidence that you are unsuited to programming. OpenStax’s introductory Python chapter also introduces beginners to error messages and treats mistakes as a normal part of the process.

Choose resources by what they expect and how they teach

Resource Best fit Format and practice
LearnPython.org People who want an accessible, browser-based start Interactive lessons covering beginner topics from “Hello, World!” onward
Official Python Tutorial People who already understand basic programming Online tutorial; keep an interpreter handy to run its examples
Python Wiki introductory books list Readers who prefer a linear book and exercises Community index of introductory titles; check edition and availability with a bookseller

For a book aimed at programming beginners, the Python Wiki’s list describes Python from Scratch by Nilo Ney Coutinho Menezes as including examples and exercises. It lists paperback ISBN 978-85-7522-949-1; confirm the edition and whether it is available before buying. The same index lists The Quick Python Book, 4th Edition, by Naomi Ceder, as a book for readers who already know how to program and want to learn Python, so it is a better fit for that audience than for a complete beginner.

Whichever format you choose, look for opportunities to run code, change examples, and solve exercises. A first guide should help you understand the fundamentals and make a small program, not promise mastery of every Python library or programming approach.
