For a small, local contact-book app, use Python’s standard-library sqlite3 module and connect it to a named database file. That gives the app durable storage without a separate database server. A key design choice is the file path: connect to a predictable location so the app finds the same contacts on every run.

Choose a persistence method that fits the contact book

Python offers several standard-library persistence options, including pickle, shelve, DBM variants, and sqlite3. The Python documentation lists these approaches but does not provide a performance comparison. For a contact book whose records may need individual searches, edits, and deletions, SQLite is a natural fit because it stores structured data in a database and supports querying specific records.

SQLite is disk-based and does not require a separate server process, according to the Python 3.13.16 sqlite3 reference. This makes it a reasonable default for a single-user learning project, not a claim that it is always superior to other storage choices. The Python 3.14.8 data persistence documentation provides an overview of the standard-library alternatives.

Connect to a stable database file

The app should choose and document a consistent location for its database. A relative filename is simple, but its location depends on the directory from which the user launches the program. An explicit path, such as one under the user’s application-data directory, can be more predictable. The exact path is a project decision; there is no single path required by Python or SQLite.

Python’s sqlite3.connect() accepts a database path and can create a database file when one does not already exist. Passing :memory: instead creates an in-memory database, which is useful for temporary work but does not retain data after the connection ends. Keep the database path in one configuration point rather than scattering filenames throughout the code.

Do not confuse Python’s SQLite library with the separate SQLite command-line shell. The shell’s behavior depends on how it is launched: opening it with a filename uses that database file, while launching it without a filename uses a transient in-memory database. The SQLite command-line shell documentation explains this distinction. An app intended to retain contacts should connect explicitly to its chosen file.

Decide what a contact record contains

The title does not prescribe a contact schema. A modest starting design might include a required name and optional phone number, email address, organization, and notes. Add only fields the app needs; optional information should be allowed to remain blank. Before implementing the schema, decide how the app will handle duplicate contacts, blank names, and whether searching should match part of a name or require an exact match.

Keep the schema and the user-facing commands aligned. If the app supports editing an email address, for example, that field must be represented in storage and validated during updates. These are product choices, not requirements imposed by SQLite.

Define the CLI operations and separate responsibilities

A useful initial command set could include adding a contact, listing contacts, searching, updating a record, and deleting one. Treat these as a proposed scope rather than built-in features: Python and SQLite do not provide a contact-book interface automatically.

Organize the program so terminal interaction, input validation, and database operations are distinct responsibilities. The CLI layer can interpret a command and collect values; validation can check required fields and acceptable input; storage functions can read or change records. This separation makes it easier to test each part and to change the interface without rewriting database logic.

Use SQLite’s parameterized query interface for values supplied by the user rather than building SQL statements by concatenating input. Choose transaction and connection behavior appropriate to the Python version targeted by the project; the sqlite3 reference documents those API details.

Plan for backups, portability, and privacy

Tell users where the database file is stored so they can find it, copy it before experiments or schema changes, and restore a copy if needed. SQLite’s command-line shell documentation notes that its .save command overwrites an existing database file without prompting. That warning concerns the shell, not Python’s application save behavior, but it is a good reason to be explicit about file paths and backup steps.

A local database file is not, by itself, a promise of encryption, access control, synchronization, or any other privacy protection. Contact information is personal data, so explain what the app stores and where it stores it. The assignment does not establish that any particular privacy safeguard is implemented; include such a claim only if the code actually provides it.
