A Python cheat sheet is best used as a fast reminder, not as a substitute for learning the language or checking exact behavior. For current syntax and library details, start with the Python Software Foundation’s Python 3.14.7 documentation (last updated September 28, 2026); use a condensed sheet to find the topic, then follow its links into the tutorial or reference.
Which Python cheat sheet should you use?
For a quick, beginner-oriented overview, Real Python’s Python Cheat Sheet covers setup, syntax, data types, variables, strings, control flow, functions, classes, errors, and input/output, and offers a printable version. It is a third-party learning aid, not the language’s official definition.
For the authoritative answer to a question, go to the Python documentation. Its landing page separates the tutorial, built-in functions, library reference, language reference, setup guidance, FAQs, and HOWTOs. That division is useful: the tutorial explains concepts in sequence, while references help answer narrower questions. The documentation page currently identifies itself as Python 3.14.7.
Choose based on the job at hand:
- Recall syntax while coding: use a compact cheat sheet that is clearly labeled with its Python version.
- Learn a concept: use the official tutorial or an explanatory guide with examples.
- Confirm exact behavior: check the matching built-in, library, or language reference entry.
- Study offline or print: use Python.org’s downloadable documentation formats or a printable sheet.
These resources have different purposes. A short sheet trades explanation and edge cases for scanability; documentation and tutorials provide the detail needed to understand conditions and exceptions.

Quick Python reference: core syntax and common tasks
The examples below are compact reminders for common Python tasks. They are not exhaustive specifications; follow the official documentation linked above when version-sensitive behavior or less common cases matter.
Start the interpreter and run a script
At a terminal, start the interactive interpreter with python or, on systems where the Python 3 command is named separately, python3. Enter expressions at the >>> prompt to see results immediately. To run a saved file, pass its path to the interpreter, for example:
python3 hello.py
The exact command available depends on how Python is installed and configured on your operating system. The official documentation landing page links to setup and use guidance for details.
Indentation, statements, and comments
Indentation marks blocks in Python. Use consistent indentation for the statements belonging to a function, conditional, loop, or class. A hash sign begins a comment that continues to the end of the line.
# A short comment
name = "Ada"
if name:
print(name)
Unlike languages that use braces to delimit these blocks, Python relies on indentation; inconsistent indentation can prevent a program from parsing.
Variables, common types, and conversions
Assign a value with =. A variable refers to an object; the value’s type determines which operations make sense.
count = 3
price = 4.5
name = "Ada"
is_ready = True
Common built-in types include integers, floating-point numbers, strings, booleans, lists, tuples, dictionaries, and sets. Convert values when a task needs a different type:
text = str(count)
number = int("12")
fraction = float("2.5")

Conversions can fail when the input cannot be represented as the requested type, so validate or handle errors when data comes from users or external sources. Consult the built-ins reference for exact behavior.
Strings and collections
Strings are text. f-strings are a readable way to insert values into a string:
user = "Ada"
message = f"Hello, {user}!"
Lists are ordered and mutable; tuples are ordered and immutable. Dictionaries associate keys with values; sets hold unique elements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsitems = ["pen", "book"]
point = (3, 4)
profile = {"name": "Ada", "active": True}
unique_ids = {10, 20, 10}
Use indexing and slicing to select portions of sequences: items[0] selects the first list element, while items[:1] selects a slice. An index outside the sequence raises an error. For a dictionary, retrieve a value by key with profile["name"]; if a key may be absent, consider profile.get("role").
Conditionals and loops
Use if, elif, and else to choose among branches. A for loop visits items in an iterable; a while loop continues while its condition is true.
for item in items:
if item == "book":
print("Found a book")

Be sure a while loop changes something that can make its condition false, or it may never finish. Use break to leave a loop early and continue to move to its next iteration.

Functions
Define reusable behavior with def. Parameters receive values from the caller; return sends a result back.
def greet(name):
return f"Hello, {name}!"
message = greet("Ada")
Default parameter values and keyword arguments can make calls clearer:

return f"Welcome, {name}{punctuation}"
welcome(name="Ada", punctuation=".")
For subtleties such as mutable default values, scope, and annotations, consult the tutorial and language reference rather than relying on a one-line reminder.
Classes and objects
A class defines a kind of object and its behavior. The __init__ method initializes an instance; self refers to that instance.
class Dog:
def __init__(self, name):
self.name = name
def speak(self):
return f"{self.name} says woof"
pet = Dog("Milo")
print(pet.speak())
Classes are useful when a program needs its own data types and associated behavior. For many simple tasks, functions and built-in collections are enough.
Exceptions and errors
Python reports runtime problems as exceptions. Use try and except to handle specific failures you can recover from; avoid catching every exception without a reason.

A traceback points to where an exception occurred and shows the call path. Read the final exception type and message first, then inspect the relevant line and the earlier calls that led to it.
Read and write files
Use a context manager to open a file so it is closed when the block ends. Specify an encoding for text files when appropriate.
with open("notes.txt", "r", encoding="utf-8") as file:
contents = file.read()
with open("output.txt", "w", encoding="utf-8") as file:
file.write("Savedn")
Mode "r" reads an existing file; "w" writes and replaces its contents; "a" appends. A missing input file or an unwritable destination can raise an exception.
How to use a cheat sheet without learning the wrong lesson
- Check its version and date. A sheet that does not say which Python version it covers may omit newer behavior or describe older conventions.
- Look up the concept, not just the token. A syntax reminder can show how to write a loop; a tutorial explains when to use it and what it does.
- Follow the official reference for exact behavior. Check built-ins, the standard library, or the language reference when correctness depends on details.
- Check version notes when updating code. The official documentation includes “What’s New” and deprecation information alongside its reference material.
- Practice by changing examples. Run a short example, alter an input, and observe the result; a printed sheet is a lookup aid, not an interactive explanation.
Beware of search results that look official but describe a different era. The Python.org-hosted A Python Quick Reference explicitly covers Python 1.3 and is dated October 30, 1995. It is a historical document, not a current Python 3 cheat sheet.

Python.org’s Our Documentation page points to learning resources, Python books, and downloadable documentation formats, including typeset versions suitable for printing. Real Python’s cheat sheet also offers a printable option. Use a printable sheet when you want quick access away from a screen; for deeper study, download the fuller documentation or work through the tutorial.
A book can provide extended explanations and exercises if you want a more guided path, but no particular current title or edition is established here. Check that any book you choose is explicitly about modern Python 3 and has a suitable edition date.

ScreenshotNeo: an unrelated tool for website screenshots
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers, not a Python learning reference. If a Python project also needs to capture web pages, it offers a one-request alternative to setting up browser automation. See ScreenshotNeo for product details.
Or skip the browser setup
Call the ScreenshotNeo API with a URL to request an image or PDF. This cURL example saves a WebP response:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for the free plan.

Where to look next in the official documentation
The Python 3.14.7 documentation landing page is a practical index, rather than a single all-purpose manual. Use its sections according to the question:
- New to Python: begin with the tutorial, which introduces syntax and features.
- Need a built-in function: use the built-ins reference for functions such as
int(),str(), andenumerate(). - Need a module or file operation: consult the library reference.
- Need precise language behavior: use the language reference.
- Updating or checking compatibility: read the “What’s New” and deprecation information for the relevant version.
The landing page’s own orientation is apt: “Start here: a tour of Python’s syntax and features”. Treat a cheat sheet as the map, and open the detailed page when the answer depends on context.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there an official Python cheat sheet?
The Python documentation is the official reference, organized into a tutorial, built-ins, library reference, language reference, and other sections. Python.org also links to learning and printable documentation formats; a condensed sheet such as Real Python’s is a third-party aid.
Can I learn Python from a cheat sheet alone?
A cheat sheet helps recall syntax, but its brevity leaves out explanation and edge cases. Pair it with the official tutorial and practice, then use reference pages to verify details.
How can I tell whether an old Python cheat sheet is still useful?
Check the version and date it names, then compare version-sensitive details with the official documentation. A Python 1.3 reference from 1995 is historical, not a reliable current Python 3 guide.
