It did not remain at the top: GitHub’s 2025 report says TypeScript overtook Python and JavaScript by contributor counts in August 2025. The two reports use different descriptions of their measures, so the rankings are best read with their dates and metrics attached.
What did GitHub mean by “most popular” in 2024?
GitHub’s 2024 Octoverse report ranked Python ahead of JavaScript when it considered activity across multiple contribution types. Those included commits, issues, pull requests, comments on issues and pull requests, discussions, pushed code, and reviewed pull requests. GitHub did not publish a complete formula or weighting scheme for the aggregate ranking, so the result should not be treated as a simple count of all actions.
The metric matters: JavaScript still ranked first for code pushes alone. Python’s 2024 lead applied to GitHub’s broader activity measure, not every way of measuring language use. GitHub’s 2024 Octoverse report explains the ranking and its scope.
Why did Python become GitHub’s most popular language?
GitHub connected Python’s rise with its substantial use in machine learning, data science, scientific computing, hobbyist projects, and home automation. It also reported that Jupyter Notebook usage on GitHub increased 92% in 2024. GitHub suggested the notebook growth could reflect more participation by people working in data science, AI, machine learning, and academia; it did not establish any one factor as the cause of Python’s ranking change.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The ranking also reflected competition within the JavaScript ecosystem. GitHub said Python’s contributor counts grew faster than JavaScript’s in both code-push activity and other activity, but not faster than JavaScript and TypeScript combined. It characterized this as a shift toward TypeScript, rather than a decline in the JavaScript community.
Deb Nicholson, executive director of the Python Software Foundation, welcomed the 2024 result and the increased use of Jupyter Notebooks, data analysis, AI, and open-source technology. Her statement is the response of a Python community stakeholder, not an independent account of what caused the ranking to change.

Is Python still the most popular language on GitHub?
No—not in GitHub’s latest ranking described here. GitHub’s 2025 Octoverse report says TypeScript became its most-used language for the first time in August 2025, overtaking Python and JavaScript by contributor counts. GitHub reported that TypeScript had approximately 42,000 more contributors than Python. Python remained especially prominent in AI and data science, which GitHub describes as areas where it is dominant.
The 2025 report describes its ranking in terms of contributor counts. Its year-over-year growth comparisons use August 2025 versus August 2024 to control for seasonal variation in monthly contributor counts. That is not the same measure as the broader activity ranking GitHub described for 2024, so the two results should not be read as one unchanged time series.

How to interpret the Python, JavaScript, and TypeScript rankings
- Check the date: Python led GitHub’s broader activity measure in the 2024 report; TypeScript led its contributor-count ranking in August 2025.
- Check what is counted: Code pushes alone produced a different 2024 leader than GitHub’s wider activity measure.
- Keep application context in view: GitHub highlights Python’s role in AI and data science, while its reports describe growth in TypeScript alongside the JavaScript ecosystem.
- Do not generalize beyond GitHub: These rankings do not establish which language is most popular across all developers, workplaces, or measures of programming activity.
GitHub’s reports support a platform-specific account of changing activity and contributor counts. They do not provide a universal head-to-head measure of programming work or an independent survey that would verify a worldwide popularity ranking.
