Choose PyCharm for Python-first application development, Spyder for interactive scientific computing and data exploration, or VS Code for a flexible editor that spans Python, other languages, and remote or container-based work. There is no universal winner: the right choice depends on what you build and how you work.
The difference in one minute
- PyCharm is a dedicated Python IDE: project navigation, code analysis, debugging, testing, and refactoring are part of an integrated workflow.
- Spyder is a scientific Python environment built around an editor, an IPython Console, plots, and a Variable Explorer for inspecting live data.
- VS Code is a general-purpose editor. Python and Jupyter features come mainly from extensions, which you can combine with tools for other languages and remote development.
That distinction explains why a feature checklist alone can mislead. PyCharm emphasizes a cohesive Python project experience; Spyder emphasizes interactive scientific work; VS Code emphasizes flexibility.
Quick comparison
| Need | PyCharm | Spyder | VS Code |
|---|---|---|---|

This is a comparison of documented capabilities, not an independent performance test.
Choose PyCharm for Python-first software development
Where it stands out
PyCharm brings code completion, navigation, project analysis, refactoring, debugging, testing, Git, terminal access, dependency management, and Docker support into one Python-focused application. That integration is useful when a project has multiple modules, tests, dependencies, and contributors, and you want the IDE to understand the project as a whole. See PyCharm integrations.

For web development, PyCharm Pro adds a more integrated experience for frameworks such as Django and Flask, along with JavaScript and TypeScript framework support, database tools, and advanced remote and Jupyter capabilities. These are workflow advantages, not proof that other editors cannot build the same applications. The current product has free core features and a Pro tier; avoid relying on older Community-versus-Professional comparisons. Check the current PyCharm installation and edition information and feature comparison before choosing Pro.
PyCharm documents debugpy as its default debugger for Python 3.9 or later with local and WSL interpreters. Its integrated run, test, and debug configurations suit projects where repeatedly tracing behavior across files is part of everyday work. See PyCharm debugging documentation.
Trade-offs
PyCharm is a larger, more integrated application than a minimal editor. Its project analysis and indexing can be valuable, but may be unnecessary for a short script or a user who wants to assemble a custom toolchain. Exclude generated or irrelevant folders from project analysis and avoid indexing targets you do not use. Advanced Pro features require a subscription after the trial; the free core may be enough for many Python projects.
Choose Spyder for interactive scientific Python
Why its workflow suits analysis
Spyder keeps the editor, IPython Console, plots, and Variable Explorer close together. Run code and inspect resulting objects without repeatedly adding print statements or switching to another application. The Variable Explorer can display, edit, filter, plot, and save many objects, including arrays and pandas DataFrames. See the Variable Explorer guide and IPython Console guide.

For scripts you want to run piece by piece, mark cells with # %% and execute them with Shift+Enter in the IPython Console. This makes Spyder a natural choice for exploratory analysis, engineering calculations, and learning through visible variables and plots. Its strength is interactive examination of live state, rather than managing the full lifecycle of a large production application.
What it is not
Spyder is not limited to beginners, and it is not simply a text editor; its current environment includes debugging, code analysis, plugins, and external kernels. But for full-stack web development, large multi-language repositories, or extensive remote and container workflows, PyCharm or VS Code is usually a better fit.
Spyder is free and open source and does not require an Anaconda license. Spyder itself and the distribution used to install Python packages are separate matters: licensing restrictions may apply to Anaconda or its default channels for some larger for-profit organizations. Spyder’s FAQ discusses standalone installation, environment setup, and alternatives including Miniforge and conda-forge.
Choose VS Code for flexibility and a broad development stack
Python through extensions
VS Code itself is a general-purpose editor. Install Microsoft’s Python extension for features such as IntelliSense, interpreter selection, linting, debugging, and test discovery; add the Jupyter extension for notebooks and interactive execution. Python must be installed separately. The VS Code Python documentation explains the available features and setup.

This approach works well if your work crosses Python, JavaScript or TypeScript, C++, notebooks, infrastructure files, and other technologies. VS Code also supports Python files with # %% cells, a Python Interactive window, plots, variable inspection, Data Viewer, and remote Jupyter servers; see Jupyter support in VS Code.
Remote work and customization
VS Code offers documented workflows for SSH, WSL, and development containers. With Remote – SSH, a VS Code Server runs on the remote machine while you work from the local editor; Dev Containers can define a repeatable environment with devcontainer.json. See Remote – SSH and Dev Containers.
Its flexibility has a cost: you choose, configure, and maintain extensions. Beginners may need to learn workspaces, interpreters, extensions, and settings before the setup feels coherent. Use profiles for different technology stacks, keep extensions limited to what you need, and prefer workspace-specific settings where project behavior should be reproducible. See VS Code extensions and profiles.
Pick by the work you expect to do
- Learning Python for application development: Start with PyCharm if you want an integrated project workflow. It is not necessary to switch editors later just to become a capable Python programmer.
- Learning through data analysis or engineering math: Start with Spyder if seeing variables, arrays, and plots beside the editor will help you understand each step.
- Learning Python alongside web development or other languages: Choose VS Code if you are comfortable installing extensions and configuring an interpreter.
- Data analysis or scientific computing: Choose Spyder for convenient interactive inspection; choose VS Code for notebook-centered repositories, remote Jupyter, or a broader engineering toolchain. PyCharm is also capable, with advanced notebook and scientific features in Pro.
- Backend or web development: PyCharm Pro is a strong choice when you want framework, database, and Python project tools integrated. Choose VS Code when the wider JavaScript, Docker, cloud, or infrastructure stack is equally important.
- Automation and short scripts: Any of the three works. Prefer VS Code if you want one editor for many languages; Spyder if you want an interactive console; PyCharm if scripts belong to a larger Python project.
- Remote, cloud, or container development: VS Code is a strong default for its broad documented SSH, WSL, and container workflow. PyCharm is a serious alternative through JetBrains Gateway and remote backends. Spyder can connect to external kernels, but that is more specialized.
- Low-powered computer: VS Code or Spyder may suit you, but do not assume one will always be faster. Project indexing, extensions, notebooks, language servers, and active workloads change resource use.
Jupyter and interactive execution
| If you need… | A good fit |
|---|---|
| Notebook-first analysis with visible variables | Spyder or VS Code |
| Notebooks alongside a large Python or web project | PyCharm Pro or VS Code |
| Python scripts divided into executable cells | Spyder or VS Code |
| A remote Jupyter server | VS Code or PyCharm Pro |
| Exploratory execution with a scientific console close at hand | Spyder |
PyCharm has basic notebook support in its free core; Pro adds more advanced local and remote notebook, dataset, table, dashboard, and Conda capabilities. If most of your work is notebook-first, consider whether JupyterLab is a better comparison point than any one of these desktop tools.

Set up Python environments so packages import correctly
Many apparent editor problems are interpreter problems: a package was installed into one Python environment while the editor is running another. Create a virtual environment or Conda environment for each project where practical, install packages there, and configure the editor to use that same interpreter. Avoid blindly installing project dependencies into system Python or a shared Conda base environment.
VS Code
- Install Python separately, then install Microsoft’s Python extension.
- Open the project and run Python: Select Interpreter from the Command Palette.
- Choose the environment for that project. If it is not listed, specify the interpreter path manually.
These steps are covered in the VS Code Python documentation.
Spyder
Spyder recommends its standalone installation as a straightforward way to get started. If you want Spyder to run code in a separate Conda or virtual environment, that environment needs a compatible spyder-kernels package. Select its Python interpreter in Spyder’s interpreter settings; if needed, obtain the executable path by running the diagnostic below inside the target environment. When a kernel fails to start, check the version compatibility and install the spyder-kernels version requested by Spyder. See the Spyder FAQ.
PyCharm
Configure the project interpreter to point to the environment in which you installed the project’s dependencies. PyCharm’s dependency and interpreter integrations are described in its integration guide.

python -c "import sys; print(sys.executable)"
python -m pip show PACKAGE_NAME
The first command prints the active Python executable; the second checks whether a named package is installed for the Python invoked as python. If the IDE uses a different executable, select the correct interpreter, then restart the language server or kernel.
Performance, operating systems, and hardware
Vendor requirements are useful for checking compatibility, but they are not equivalent independent speed benchmarks. VS Code describes a download below 200 MB and a disk footprint below 500 MB; extensions, language servers, indexing, and notebooks add overhead. See the VS Code overview.
JetBrains lists PyCharm requirements of a four-core x86_64 or ARM64 CPU, 8 GB total RAM, 3 GB available for IDE processes, and 10 GB disk space. Spyder’s documentation estimates about 0.5–1 GB of RAM for the application depending on use, recommends 8 GB system RAM for comfortable use alongside other applications, and lists dual-core hardware as a baseline. See the PyCharm requirements and Spyder FAQ. Actual performance depends on project size, indexing, extensions, notebooks, language servers, and running workloads.
All three support Windows, macOS, and Linux, though exact supported operating-system releases and Python versions differ and change over time. Check the vendors’ current installation documentation for your system before installing: PyCharm requirements, VS Code platform information, and the Spyder FAQ.
Cost, licensing, and organizational policy
VS Code is free and open source, and Spyder is free and open source. PyCharm’s current unified product has free core functionality, with advanced features available in Pro after a 30-day trial. Check current terms for paid features rather than relying on a fixed price stated elsewhere; details can change. See the VS Code overview, Spyder FAQ, and PyCharm editions.
In organizations, review extension and plugin approval, telemetry and AI rules, licensing, procurement, and remote source-code handling. A tool being free does not automatically mean every extension or connected service meets company policy. For example, VS Code’s documentation notes telemetry is enabled for the free Copilot experience unless changed in settings; review the current Copilot documentation and organizational requirements before using AI features with proprietary code.
Final recommendation
- Python-first software development: PyCharm.
- Interactive scientific Python and data inspection: Spyder.
- Multi-language flexibility, extensions, and remote or container work: VS Code.
You can also use more than one: for example, Spyder for exploratory analysis and VS Code or PyCharm for maintainable application code. Choose the environment that reduces friction for the work you do most.
