In PXI, “single-” and “double-Eurocard” usually describe module height: 3U and 6U, respectively. That mechanical distinction does not by itself determine whether a module is electrically compatible with a chassis; you also need to check the PXI or PXI Express family, slot type, power, cooling, and bandwidth.

What do single- and double-Eurocard mean in PXI?

PXI combines PCI or PCI Express electrical technology with CompactPCI-derived Eurocard mechanics, plus timing and triggering features for measurement and automation. National Instruments describes PXI as a rugged, PC-based platform for those systems.

In common PXI usage, a single-height Eurocard is 3U and a double-height Eurocard is 6U. The U designation describes module height; it does not indicate the card’s bus type or performance.

Format Common description Approximate module size
3U Single-height Eurocard 10 × 16 cm (National Instruments, 2025)
6U Double-height Eurocard 23.335 × 16 cm (National Instruments, 2025)

Will a 3U PXI card fit in a 6U chassis?

It can be used in a 6U system if the chassis and installation provide the required adapter. Do not assume that a 3U card will fill or attach correctly to a 6U front-panel opening without one. Confirm the chassis documentation and the module’s mechanical requirements before ordering.

  • Ideal for combining high-end 6U RF modules with commercially available 3U PXI modules.
  • Designed for applications requiring custom module integration in a single PXI chassis.

Are PXI and PXI Express modules interchangeable?

No—not as a general rule. A traditional PXI chassis does not accept PXI Express (PXIe) modules. Some chassis have hybrid slots that support more than one module class, but compatibility depends on the exact chassis and slot design. Check the chassis manual for each intended module rather than relying only on the PXI or PXIe label.

Check the slot role as well as the bus family

PXI systems distinguish peripheral slots from the system-controller slot and may include specialized timing slots. The controller goes in the designated system slot, normally slot 1; instrumentation modules occupy peripheral slots. A module’s fit and function therefore depend on both its electrical family and the particular slot.

How much power and cooling does a PXI chassis need?

Use the chassis specification for the actual slot type and configuration. National Instruments states that PXI Express chassis provide at least 38.25 W of power and cooling per peripheral slot; some chassis provide 58 W or 82 W per slot (National Instruments, 2026). Those are per-slot figures, not a guarantee that every populated chassis can supply the maximum to every module simultaneously.

Build the power and thermal budget for the complete configuration. Check the requirements of each module, the chassis’s slot limits and aggregate capacity, and the controller’s requirements. If the chassis documentation does not establish that the planned combination is supported, confirm it with the manufacturer before committing to the system.

  • 2 x front access USB 3.0 (compatible with USB2.0)

How much bandwidth does a PXI system need?

Match the chassis backplane capability—including link generation, lane width, and segment arrangement—to the modules’ data-transfer needs. NI’s representative rates illustrate how widely requirements can vary; they are examples by instrument type, not a promise of throughput for every module or chassis.

Instrument type Representative data rate Source and qualification
Digital multimeters (DMMs) Below 0.1 MB/s National Instruments, 2026; representative rate
Waveform generators and oscilloscopes Can reach 5 GB/s National Instruments, 2026; representative rate
RF modules 5–20 GB/s National Instruments, 2026; representative range

For a specific build, use the module’s documented transfer requirements and the chassis’s supported backplane configuration. A category-level rate cannot establish the performance of a particular model, slot, or multi-module arrangement.

What makes up a complete PXI system?

A typical system has four parts. The chassis provides the mechanical structure, backplane, power, cooling, slot timing, and synchronization. A controller runs the system, either as an embedded PXI controller or through a supported external-PC connection. Peripheral modules provide instrumentation such as data acquisition, digitizing, or RF functions. Software and drivers configure the instruments and run the application.

Choose the controller and software together

Verify that the controller or PC link supports the required operating system, drivers, timing functions, and application. PXI systems commonly use LabVIEW, C/C++, .NET, Python, and test-management software such as TestStand. Confirm support for the specific instruments and software versions in the system you intend to build.

A practical PXI chassis selection checklist

  1. Confirm the module height. Identify each card as 3U or 6U and determine whether the chassis accepts it directly or requires an adapter.
  2. Confirm electrical compatibility. Check whether each module is PXI or PXIe and verify the exact capabilities of its intended slot, including any hybrid-slot restrictions.
  3. Check the slot assignment. Reserve the designated system slot, normally slot 1, for the controller; verify that instruments are assigned to suitable peripheral or specialized slots.
  4. Budget power and cooling. Compare every module’s requirements with per-slot and chassis-wide limits for the planned population.
  5. Match backplane bandwidth. Compare module data needs with chassis link generation, lane width, and segment arrangement.
  6. Validate the control stack. Confirm controller or PC-link support, operating system, drivers, timing, and application software for the complete configuration.
