Hackers earned a reported $718,250 through the first two days of Pwn2Own Automotive 2025, demonstrating exploits against automotive infotainment systems and EV chargers, including a Tesla Wall Connector. That is the contest’s running two-day total—not a verified final event total. The contest ran January 22–24, 2025, in Tokyo; the final day’s awards and overall winner are not established by the results cited here.
How much did hackers win at Pwn2Own Automotive 2025?
Zero Day Initiative (ZDI), the contest organizer, reported $382,750 in awards on day one and $335,500 on day two, bringing the running total to $718,250 through day two. SecurityWeek independently reported the same cumulative figure. The day-specific ZDI results posts are dated January 21 and 22, while the official contest rules give the event dates as January 22–24; those post dates should not be confused with the contest period. The $718,250 figure is not a verified final total for the event. The cited results establish the running amount through day two, but not the final day’s awards or the overall Master of Pwn winner.

The event covered several automotive target classes, not just cars. The official rules included Tesla systems, in-vehicle infotainment (IVI), EV chargers, and automotive operating systems. Named targets included a Tesla Model 3/Y Ryzen-based vehicle or equivalent bench-top unit; infotainment units from Sony, Alpine, Pioneer and Kenwood; and chargers from ChargePoint, Phoenix Contact, WOLFBOX, EMPORIA, Tesla, Autel and Ubiquiti. ZDI’s event announcement explains that infotainment systems can provide navigation, in-car internet and Wi-Fi, and may connect with other vehicle systems through CAN bus. That is the organizer’s rationale for including the category; it does not establish that every listed model has those same connections or is vulnerable in the same way. ZDI’s event announcement.
What were the reported exploit demonstrations?
Day one: infotainment and charger findings
ZDI reported $382,750 awarded for 16 unique zero-days on day one. Examples included a stack-based buffer overflow against Alpine infotainment, OS command injection against Kenwood, an integer overflow against a Sony receiver, and a hard-coded cryptographic key issue involving a Ubiquiti charger. Day two: Tesla, WOLFBOX, Autel and infotainment
On day two, ZDI reported $335,500 in awards for 23 unique zero-days. Demonstrations included a logic bug in a Tesla Wall Connector chain reached through the charging connector, a two-bug chain against WOLFBOX, a multi-bug Autel charger exploit, and chains involving infotainment targets. Was the Tesla Wall Connector hacked?
A contest team demonstrated a logic bug in an exploit chain involving the Tesla Wall Connector, with the attempt reaching the charger through its charging connector, according to ZDI’s day-two results. This is evidence of a successful demonstration against a contest target under contest conditions; it is not proof that all production Wall Connectors are vulnerable, or that a particular owner’s charger can be exploited remotely.
The results described here do not establish whether a vendor patch or public advisory has since addressed any particular finding. Contest demonstration, disclosure, and patch availability are separate facts.

What did the contest rules require?
The official rules set the event in Tokyo, Japan, for January 22–24, 2025. They defined acceptable attempts around exposed services, protocols and interfaces accessible to a typical user, with category-specific exceptions and add-ons. Findings were expected to be unknown, unpublished and/or not previously reported, though the sponsor could accept known-bug cases at reduced awards. Successful contestants had to provide a functioning exploit and a whitepaper describing the vulnerabilities and sequence of techniques. Official Pwn2Own Automotive 2025 rules.
The rules state: “Vulnerabilities and exploit techniques revealed by contest winners will be disclosed to the affected vendors and the exploits and whitepapers will become the property of the Sponsor in accordance with the ZDI researcher agreement.” This clause describes disclosure to affected vendors and the researcher agreement; it does not say that patches were released or establish their status. What the results do—and do not—show
Pwn2Own results document demonstrations against specified contest targets. They are useful for seeing the kinds of attack surfaces researchers tested—such as infotainment interfaces, charger connections and exposed services—but should not be read as a blanket security assessment of every vehicle or charger from a named manufacturer.
