OneSignal’s guide requires Capacitor 7 or later and covers native iOS and Android push. The core flow is to configure platform credentials, install and sync the plugin, initialize it with your OneSignal App ID, request permission at an appropriate time, and test a device subscription.
Choose the setup that matches your app
This guide is for an Ionic app that uses Capacitor to build native iOS or Android apps. Follow OneSignal’s Capacitor SDK setup; it lists Capacitor 7 or later as a requirement. If your app uses Cordova rather than Capacitor, use OneSignal’s separate Ionic/Cordova instructions instead.
Native push and browser Web Push are different integrations. The Capacitor plugin is for installed iOS and Android apps. Web Push uses the web SDK and browser-specific setup; Ionic’s 2021 Ionic React article describes that browser route, not the current native Capacitor flow.
Check prerequisites and configure OneSignal
OneSignal’s current guide lists the following environment requirements. Toolchain requirements can change, so check the live guide before beginning a new project.

Create or open the OneSignal app for your project, then configure the platforms you plan to support. OneSignal lists Apple APNs, Google FCM, Huawei HMS, and Amazon ADM as platform options. For typical iOS and Android builds, configure the relevant Apple and Firebase credentials in OneSignal:
- iOS: add an APNs authentication token (p8), which the guide recommends, or an APNs certificate (p12).
- Android: add Firebase Cloud Messaging credentials.
Copy the OneSignal App ID from your OneSignal app. You will use it when initializing the SDK.

Install and initialize the Capacitor plugin
From your Ionic project directory, install the package and sync the native projects:
npm install @onesignal/capacitor-plugin
npx cap sync
Initialize OneSignal with your App ID when the app starts. OneSignal’s current guide provides framework examples for Angular, React, and Vue; use the example that matches your Ionic app rather than copying an older web SDK snippet. In React, put initialization in the app-level startup lifecycle and prevent it from running more than once.

The guide includes a direct permission request as part of its setup example. That is useful for testing, but an app should not necessarily show a system permission prompt immediately on launch. Ask when users understand the value of notifications; OneSignal recommends removing the immediate prompt after testing and using in-app messages to invite users to enable notifications.
Configure native iOS capabilities
Open the iOS workspace in Xcode and configure the app target. Add the Push Notifications capability. If your app needs background wake behavior, also add Background Modes and enable Remote notifications.

Some enhanced notification features require extra native configuration. OneSignal documents an App Group and a Notification Service Extension (NSE) for capabilities such as confirmed receipt, badges, and rich notifications. Configure the group for the relevant targets and add the OneSignal SDK to the extension target when using those features. These additions are not presented as prerequisites for every basic push notification; follow OneSignal’s current extension instructions for your project before adding target-specific settings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Request permission and verify the subscription
Notification permission is controlled by the operating system. After the user accepts the prompt, check the subscription in OneSignal rather than assuming that calling the permission method alone means delivery is ready.

- Run the app on a supported test device or emulator and trigger the permission request at the point you want to evaluate.
- In the OneSignal dashboard, open Audience > Users & subscriptions > Subscriptions. Before permission is accepted, the device may show as Never Subscribed.
- After accepting permission, refresh the subscriptions view and confirm that the device shows Subscribed.
- Add the subscription to Test Users, create a Test Users segment, and send a test notification to that segment from the dashboard or through the documented OneSignal API flow.
Keep OneSignal API keys on a server or in a secure environment; never embed an API key in client-side app code. The guide’s example API request is for a controlled command-line test, not a pattern for shipping a secret inside the app. When confirmed receipt is configured, check the message statistics in the dashboard for the corresponding receipt information.
Choose an Android test environment
A physical Android phone is not mandatory for the documented test path: OneSignal lists either an Android 7.0 or later device or an emulator with Google Play services. An emulator is convenient for initial verification; a physical device can additionally validate behavior on real hardware.
Keep older Ionic instructions separate
OneSignal’s Ionic and Capacitor Android tutorial, published September 2, 2021, uses the older onesignal-cordova-plugin workflow. Treat it as historical context, not as a replacement for the current Capacitor SDK guide. Likewise, do not mix browser Web Push service-worker steps with the native iOS and Android Capacitor integration.
