In Puppeteer, timeout values are milliseconds. To change one wait, pass its timeout option; to change defaults across a page, use page.setDefaultTimeout() or page.setDefaultNavigationTimeout(), depending on the kind of operation. In the current Puppeteer v25.12.0 documentation, waitForSelector and waitForNavigation each default to 30,000 ms. Check your installed Puppeteer version because older releases or project-specific settings may differ.
Choose the timeout by its scope
Use the narrowest setting that solves the problem. A per-call option affects one operation; page defaults affect subsequent operations in their documented scope.

Durations are in milliseconds: 1,000 ms is one second. A timeout sets the maximum wait; it is not a delay that makes a successful operation wait out the full duration.
Set a timeout for one selector wait
The current v25.12.0 API reference documents a 30,000 ms default for waitForSelector. Pass a different value in the options object to override it for one call:

Use 0 to disable the timeout for this API, as documented for WaitForSelectorOptions. Disabling a timeout can leave the operation waiting indefinitely if the condition never occurs.
The selector wait can also target visibility state. With visible: true, Puppeteer waits for the element to be present and visible. With hidden: true, it waits for the element to be hidden or absent; if the selector is not found, it resolves to null. These options change what condition is being awaited, not how long the wait may run. See the Puppeteer waitForSelector API.
Change the general page timeout
Call page.setDefaultTimeout(milliseconds) when multiple general waits should share a different default. The argument is milliseconds. A local timeout passed to a particular method remains the clearer choice when only one operation needs a longer or shorter limit.

page.setDefaultTimeout(15_000);Do not assume this is the navigation default. Puppeteer provides a separate setter for navigation-related methods.

page.setDefaultNavigationTimeout(milliseconds) sets the default timeout for the documented methods goBack, goForward, goto, reload, setContent, and waitForNavigation. It does not replace the general timeout for operations such as selector waits.

Keep navigation conditions separate from duration
For waitForNavigation, timeout caps how long Puppeteer waits, while waitUntil specifies which lifecycle event or events must occur. The documented default timeout is 30,000 ms. If waitUntil is an array, the wait succeeds after all listed events have fired.

});Choose the lifecycle condition based on what the next step needs. A page can have changed URL or rendered some content without reaching the particular lifecycle event your wait requires. Changing the timeout alone does not change that condition. Refer to the waitForNavigation API for supported options.

Puppeteer’s current guide recommends Locators for typical element interactions. A locator inherits the page timeout by default, and setTimeout() can give that locator a local limit:

await page.locator('button').setTimeout(5_000).click();The locator timeout is still a maximum, not a pause. The current guide documents 0 as disabling the locator timeout. See the Puppeteer page interactions guide.
Complete example: different limits for different waits
This example uses a general timeout for ordinary waits, a longer navigation default, and local options where a particular operation needs an explicit condition or limit:

})();The example demonstrates documented option shapes; it is not a guarantee that a particular site, selector, or navigation sequence will succeed. Avoid waiting for navigation after an action unless that action is expected to trigger navigation.

Troubleshoot timeout errors
The selector never appears
- Check that the selector matches the page’s DOM and that the relevant content is actually loaded.
- If the element is added asynchronously, use a bounded timeout that reflects the expected wait rather than disabling the limit by default.
- If you are waiting for visibility or disappearance, confirm that
visibleorhiddenmatches the intended condition.
The page changed, but waitForNavigation timed out
- Review the configured
waitUntilevent or events. The page may not reach the requested lifecycle condition even if some visible content changes. - Check whether the action triggers a full navigation at all. Client-side route changes may not behave like a conventional document navigation.
- Set the navigation timeout for the required duration, but do not use a longer limit to conceal an incorrect wait condition.
A default setting did not affect the wait
- Check which scope applies. Selector waits use the general timeout default; navigation methods in the documented set use the navigation timeout default.
- Check whether the method call supplies its own
timeoutoption. - Confirm the installed Puppeteer version and consult the matching API reference if its types or behavior differ from the current documentation.
A wait hangs after setting timeout to zero
For APIs that document 0 as disabling the timeout, no timeout error will interrupt a condition that never becomes true. Restore a finite value or add an application-level deadline and cleanup path.
