Choose Puppeteer if your screenshot tests already run in Node.js and Chrome or Firefox meets your needs. Choose Selenium if your team needs multiple language bindings, an existing WebDriver test stack, or Selenium Grid. Both can capture page and element screenshots; neither capture API by itself provides a complete visual-regression workflow.

What each tool does for screenshot tests

Puppeteer is a Node.js library with documented page-level and element-level screenshot methods. Selenium exposes screenshot capture through WebDriver, with examples in its language-specific documentation. In either case, taking an image is only one part of testing: you still need to save reference images, compare new captures with them, review differences, and decide when an approved change should update a baseline.

The choice is therefore less about whether either tool can take a screenshot and more about the browser, language, execution infrastructure, and comparison process your team needs.

Puppeteer vs Selenium at a glance

Decision Puppeteer Selenium
Screenshot capture Official documentation shows page and element screenshots. Exact behavior and options depend on browser and protocol. WebDriver documentation shows page and element screenshots through language bindings.
Languages Node.js library. Multiple language bindings, including options for teams working in established Selenium frameworks.
Browser considerations Chrome and Firefox support is available from Puppeteer v23.0.0 onward. Chrome and Firefox use different default protocols, which can affect feature support. Official browser documentation covers Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Safari. Browser-specific behavior and capabilities differ.
Distributed execution Puppeteer’s FAQ says large-scale orchestration such as Grid is beyond its scope. Selenium Grid is an option when distributed WebDriver execution is central to the team’s setup.
Visual-regression workflow Capture API; choose and operate a separate baseline, comparison, review, and update process. WebDriver capture; choose and operate a separate baseline, comparison, review, and update process.

Selenium’s supported-browser documentation puts the practical caveat plainly: “Each browser has custom capabilities and unique features.” Treat a browser list as an indication of documented coverage, not proof that every screenshot option behaves identically across browsers.

When Puppeteer is the better fit

  • Your automation is already written in JavaScript or TypeScript and you want a direct screenshot API within that workflow.
  • Your required browser coverage is Chrome and/or Firefox, and the particular screenshot options you need are supported by the browser and protocol you will use.
  • You are comfortable managing capture and visual comparison as separate parts of the test system.

Puppeteer’s FAQ says support for both Chrome and Firefox begins with v23.0.0. Pin Puppeteer and the browser versions used for baseline creation and CI runs; the FAQ also notes that Puppeteer versions are tied to specific browser versions.

Protocol details matter

Puppeteer defaults to Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) for Chrome and WebDriver BiDi for Firefox. Chrome can also use BiDi. The BiDi documentation lists unsupported features and limits screenshot support to specified parameters, including clip, encoding, and fullPage. Do not assume an option documented for one protocol works the same way on another; check the protocol guide for the browser and mode you actually run.

When Selenium is the better fit

  • Your test suite is in a language other than Node.js, or the team needs to share browser tests across multiple language bindings.
  • Your organization already uses WebDriver infrastructure and wants screenshot capture inside that existing suite.
  • You need browser-specific execution or have Selenium Grid capacity for distributed runs.

Selenium’s browser documentation covers Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Safari, but the available capabilities and behavior are browser-specific. Verify that your target browser supports the exact capture behavior your test depends on, then run the same test configuration when generating and checking reference images.

Build the visual-testing process around the capture

A screenshot is an artifact, not a pass/fail decision. For meaningful visual tests, define the image being captured, how it will be compared, and who can approve a changed reference.

  1. Define capture scope. Decide whether each test needs the current viewport, a full-page capture, or a particular element. Confirm that the selected browser and protocol support the required options.
  2. Make page state repeatable. Use the same route, data, authentication state, viewport, browser settings, and waits for every run. Dynamic content, animation, timestamps, and delayed assets can create differences unrelated to a code regression.
  3. Pin the rendering environment. Keep the host OS, browser version, browser settings, hardware or CI image, and headless mode consistent between baseline generation and comparison. These can all affect rendered pixels.
  4. Choose a comparison policy. Decide whether to require exact matches or allow a documented tolerance, and identify how the test reports changed regions. The comparison strategy is separate from Puppeteer’s and Selenium’s screenshot capture APIs.
  5. Review before replacing baselines. Route differences for inspection and update reference images only when the change is intentional. Avoid automatically accepting every new screenshot as the baseline.

Reproducibility, performance, and cost

Reproducibility

For Puppeteer, pin the library, browser, protocol, and environment. For Selenium, pin the browser, driver, platform, and environment used by the WebDriver session. For both, generate baselines and CI comparisons in the same controlled image where possible. If you change browser versions or rendering infrastructure, expect that image output may change and assess the baseline impact deliberately.

Performance and reliability

The available documentation establishes capture capabilities, not a performance winner between the two tools. Actual runtime and reliability depend on the browser, page, capture scope, waits, test infrastructure, and how many sessions run concurrently. Measure in your own CI setup with the browsers and pages you intend to test rather than inferring speed from the screenshot API alone.

For reliable captures, wait for the application state you need instead of relying on a fixed delay alone, and make failure artifacts available to the person diagnosing a test. A timeout or failed navigation should be distinguished from a screenshot that completed but differs visually.

Cost

The cited project documentation does not establish a comparative price for Puppeteer and Selenium. For a self-managed setup, budget engineering and infrastructure for browser installation, CI capacity, artifact storage, and the baseline review process. If you use hosted browser or visual-comparison services, evaluate their current pricing and supported integrations separately; no particular vendor integration is established here.

Common problems and what to check

  • A screenshot option is unavailable or behaves differently in Firefox. Check whether the run uses WebDriver BiDi and whether that feature is listed as supported in Puppeteer’s BiDi guide. Compare against the protocol and browser combination in use.
  • Tests pass locally but produce different images in CI. Compare OS or CI image, browser version, browser settings, headless mode, viewport, and available rendering hardware. Align baseline generation and CI as closely as possible.
  • Images differ on every run. Look for changing page data, animation, rotating content, timestamps, fonts or images that have not loaded, and inconsistent waits. Stabilize page state before loosening comparison tolerances.
  • A full-page image is incomplete. Check the selected capture mode and browser/protocol support. Ensure the page has finished loading the content that appears only after scrolling or other interaction.
  • The screenshot exists but the test gives no meaningful regression result. Add or configure the missing baseline storage, image comparison, reporting, and approval process. Capture alone does not define whether a visual change is acceptable.
  • Browser coverage looks broader on paper than in practice. Validate the exact browser and feature combination in your suite. Selenium documents browser-specific capabilities; Puppeteer’s support and protocol behavior also vary by browser.

Try ScreenshotNeo as a no-browser-setup alternative

If you want a screenshot service rather than running Puppeteer or Selenium browsers yourself, try ScreenshotNeo first. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server; it removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits cost nothing. Its MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools, and the free plan includes 1,000 shots a month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

One GET request can return an image or PDF. This cURL example captures Stripe to WebP; replace the target URL as needed. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for available options.
