Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBoth Puppeteer and Playwright can capture full-page and element screenshots from Node.js. For a straightforward script, either can work; choose the one that fits your existing project and required browsers. If you are building visual regression tests in Playwright Test, its built-in screenshot assertion workflow is a useful reason to choose Playwright. Whichever you use, keep the rendering environment consistent so environment changes are less likely to appear as application changes.
At a glance: which should you choose?
| Need | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A small Node.js script to save a page image | Either | Both expose a page screenshot API and support full-page capture. |
| Capture a particular element | Either | Puppeteer offers element-handle screenshots; Playwright offers locator screenshots. |
| Visual regression tests in Playwright Test | Playwright | expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() integrates screenshot baselines and comparisons into the test workflow. |
| Browser coverage beyond Chromium | Check the exact project requirements | Playwright documents Chromium, Firefox and WebKit support. Chrome for Developers describes Puppeteer automation for Chrome and Firefox. Confirm supported engines and versions in your deployed setup. |
| Choose based on speed or price | No evidence-based winner here | The official documentation cited below does not provide a comparative benchmark or cost figure. |
These are workflow distinctions, not a claim that one library is universally better. For browser automation generally, Chrome for Developers describes Puppeteer; compare the browser targets and APIs needed by your own setup.
Capture a website screenshot with Puppeteer
Install Puppeteer in your Node.js project, then save a full-page image with page.screenshot(). This example waits for the page’s network activity to become idle before capture, as in Puppeteer’s guide:
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Use fullPage: true when you need the full scrollable page. Without it, the screenshot is the current viewport. See Puppeteer’s Screenshots guide for capture examples.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Capture one element
Wait for the target selector, obtain its element handle, and call the element’s screenshot method:
const element = await page.waitForSelector('.header');
if (!element) throw new Error('Could not find .header');
await element.screenshot({ path: 'header.png' });
For options such as clipping, transparent backgrounds, output path, quality and format, consult the Puppeteer ScreenshotOptions reference. Check the option names and defaults for the Puppeteer version installed in your project.
Capture a website screenshot with Playwright
Playwright’s Node.js page API also supports full-page capture. This example uses Chromium:
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
try {
const context = await browser.newContext();
const page = await context.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
For another browser engine, use the corresponding Playwright browser configuration supported by your installation. Playwright’s Page API documents page capture options.

Capture one element
Use a locator to target and save an element screenshot:
await page.locator('.header').screenshot({ path: 'header.png' });
Playwright can also return screenshot bytes for further processing or comparison. The Playwright Screenshots guide covers page and locator captures, along with controls such as clipping and masking.
Use Playwright Test for visual regression
If you already use Playwright Test, expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() provides an integrated way to establish and compare visual baselines. The first run creates a reference screenshot; later runs compare the current capture with that reference.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('home page matches its visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot();
});
Review the initial baseline before treating it as expected output. When a visual change is intentional, update the baseline through your project’s normal review process. See Playwright’s visual comparisons guide for the assertion workflow and snapshot behavior. Puppeteer’s screenshot API can be combined with a separate test or image-diff tool; the Puppeteer documentation cited here does not establish an integrated visual assertion runner.

Make screenshot results reproducible
A visual diff does not automatically mean the page code changed. Playwright notes that rendered output can vary with the operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source and headless mode. Generate and compare baselines in the same controlled environment.
- Pin or otherwise keep the browser build consistent between baseline creation and comparison.
- Keep the operating system, viewport and device scale factor consistent.
- Use the same fonts and browser settings; these practical controls follow from the documented sources of rendering variation, but do not guarantee identical output across every setup.
- Keep the page state deterministic where possible, including data and time-sensitive content.
- For unstable content such as timestamps or rotating ads, consider masking or hiding it only when that content is outside the behavior your test intends to validate. Playwright documents screenshot styling for hiding volatile elements.
Full-page captures can differ from viewport-only captures, so use the same capture mode in both baseline and comparison runs. Verify the exact screenshot options available in your installed browser automation version.
Choose based on your screenshot workflow
Choose either library for direct capture
For a one-off screenshot or a simple capture script, both have the core page and element capture APIs. Prefer the package already used by your project unless the target browser engines or specific screenshot controls point elsewhere.
Choose Playwright when its test workflow fits
Playwright Test’s screenshot assertion is a practical advantage when you want capture and visual comparison in the same test framework. This is a workflow fit, not proof that Puppeteer cannot be used for visual testing with other tools.

Check the browser matrix and options you actually need
Browser support and behavior should be confirmed for the exact versions and engines you deploy. Compare the required capabilities—full page, element capture, clipping, transparency, masking and output behavior—against the relevant API documentation rather than assuming similarly named options have identical defaults.

The screenshot shows only the visible viewport
Set fullPage: true in the screenshot call. The default capture is not a full-page image.
The screenshot is blank or incomplete
Check that navigation completed and the relevant content has loaded before capture. A fixed delay may not suit every page; wait for a meaningful selector or an appropriate readiness condition when content loads asynchronously.
An element screenshot fails or captures the wrong area
Confirm that the selector matches the intended element and that it exists before capture. In Puppeteer, wait for the selector and check the returned handle; in Playwright, use a locator that identifies the intended element.

Visual tests fail after an environment change
Compare the baseline and test environment: OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source and headless mode can affect pixels. Restore a consistent environment before deciding the application has regressed.
Only dynamic regions create noisy diffs
Stabilize test data where possible. Mask or hide unstable regions if they are not part of what the test should verify; avoid masking content whose appearance is the subject of the test.
Or skip the browser setup
If you want an HTTP request instead of managing a browser in your Node.js script, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its API accepts a URL and returns an image or PDF. The code below uses the documented Node.js request shape; replace the example target URL with the page you need. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API parameters and response details.
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
- It accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off.
- Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.
