Choose Puppeteer when screenshots are part of a browser-automation script or service; choose Cypress when they belong inside Cypress tests and you want its test-run failure screenshots and capture settings. The practical difference is workflow and control, not proven image quality or speed: the official documentation considered here provides no head-to-head benchmark. If neither browser setup fits, ScreenshotNeo is a hosted screenshot API alternative.

How Puppeteer and Cypress differ for screenshots

Both capture screenshots in software; neither is a physical capture device. The useful question is where you want capture to happen and who should manage the surrounding workflow.

Decision point Puppeteer Cypress
Best fit A script or service that drives a browser and saves page or element images. Screenshots that belong to a Cypress test workflow.
Capture scope Page screenshot and selected-element screenshot; page options include full-page and clipped capture. Page API · Element API Application, element, and runner captures; options include viewport, full-page, and runner modes. Screenshot command
Failure screenshots You build the surrounding failure-capture and artifact workflow. Can capture failures automatically in cypress run; automatic failure captures are not documented for cypress open. Screenshot configuration
Where files go Set an output path, or handle returned screenshot data in your script. Saved to the configured screenshots folder, which defaults to cypress/screenshots. Screenshot command
Capture consistency Control the browser and script around capture; the cited screenshot API pages do not establish a built-in test-failure workflow. Configure options such as timers, animations, scaling, blackout selectors, and callbacks.

These are workflow-based recommendations from documented APIs, not results of hands-on comparative testing. There is no supported basis here to call either tool universally faster, more reliable, or more accurate.

Choose Puppeteer for script-level capture

Puppeteer’s Page.screenshot() returns a promise. Its options cover full-page capture, clipping, capture beyond the viewport, transparent background, output format and quality, encoding, and an optional output path. For an element, ElementHandle.screenshot() scrolls it into view if needed; capture throws if that element has been detached from the DOM. See the ScreenshotOptions API and the screenshots guide.

Minimal page screenshot

For a script that controls browser launch, navigation, and output, the capture call can be as small as this:

const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });

That snippet assumes browser is an already-launched Puppeteer browser. A complete CommonJS example, including cleanup, is:

const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');

(async () => {
  const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
  try {
    const page = await browser.newPage();
    await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle0' });
    await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
  } finally {
    await browser.close();
  }
})();

Install Puppeteer in the project using your package manager, save the script as a JavaScript file, and run it with Node.js. The navigation wait is a choice, not a guarantee that every application has finished rendering; pages with ongoing network traffic may not reach network idle. For a dynamic page, wait for the application state or selector your capture actually needs.

Element or clipped-region capture

For a particular element, locate it and capture the handle rather than capturing the whole page:

  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
const element = await page.waitForSelector('.report-card');
if (!element) throw new Error('Report card not found');
await element.screenshot({ path: 'report-card.png' });

The element is scrolled into view as needed, but it must still belong to the DOM when capture happens. If the page replaces it during loading, wait for the final element or take a fresh handle. Use the page screenshot’s clipping option when the target is a coordinate-based rectangle rather than a DOM element; consult the option reference for the exact accepted shape and format-specific controls.

When Puppeteer is the better fit

  • Your output is an image produced by a custom script, job, or service rather than primarily a test-run artifact.
  • You need explicit page or element capture calls and control over output path, format, clipping, or full-page behavior.
  • You are willing to implement your own failure handling, storage, and team access around those image files.

Choose Cypress when screenshots belong to tests

Cypress’s cy.screenshot() supports application, element, and runner capture. Its command options include viewport, fullPage, and runner modes, as well as clipping, element padding, blackout selectors, and before/after callbacks. Manual screenshots work in both cypress open and cypress run. The command reference describes the options and default screenshots folder.

Capture from a test

In a Cypress test, visit the page, wait for the state you intend to document, and then call the screenshot command:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
describe('report page', () => {
  it('captures the full report', () => {
    cy.visit('https://example.com/report');
    cy.get('.report-ready').should('be.visible');
    cy.screenshot('report-page', { capture: 'fullPage' });
  });
});

This is a Cypress test-body example; it assumes Cypress is already installed and configured in the project. Use a selector or assertion that represents the application being ready rather than assuming navigation alone means the page is visually complete. Cypress documents that screenshot capture is asynchronous: the application may change before the image is actually taken, so the resulting screenshot may not exactly represent the state at the instant the command was issued. The command documentation explains this timing caveat.

Configure capture and failure behavior

Cypress.Screenshot.defaults() configures project-level screenshot behavior, including timer and animation handling, scaling, blackout selectors, and whether test failures trigger automatic screenshots. Cypress’s screenshot documentation says JavaScript timers and CSS animations are disabled by default during capture. Verify the defaults and settings for your project rather than assuming a manually invoked screenshot and an automatic failure screenshot are configured identically. Screenshot configuration

Automatic failure screenshots are documented for cypress run, not cypress open. That distinction matters when a developer can reproduce a problem interactively but the team expects artifacts from a CI test run. Cypress screenshots and videos

Artifacts, browsers, and team access

Cypress writes screenshots to the configured screenshots folder; its default is cypress/screenshots. Decide how your CI job retains and exposes that folder if teammates need the files after a run. Cypress Cloud is described as a companion enterprise service for viewing and sharing run artifacts; it is a separate artifact-management choice, not a prerequisite for taking screenshots. Cypress starts and controls its own browser instance. Its browser-launch documentation lists Chrome-family browsers and Firefox, and describes WebKit as experimental. This does not establish a complete cross-tool compatibility ranking: the Puppeteer references discussed here cover screenshot APIs rather than a directly comparable browser-support matrix. Check the browser and version requirements of the project you actually need to run. Cypress browser launch documentation

Make screenshot comparisons repeatable

Neither a successful capture call nor a saved file makes two images meaningfully comparable by itself. Before treating a pixel difference as a regression, control the page state and run environment.

  • Wait for the relevant UI: assert that the content or selector is present and ready, not just that the URL loaded.
  • Control changing content: clocks, rotating data, personalized text, and network-fed content can change between runs. Use stable test data or exclude known dynamic regions where appropriate.
  • Account for motion: Cypress documents timer and animation controls. In either workflow, know whether the page’s animations and scheduled updates can change the capture.
  • Keep browser conditions consistent: viewport and browser configuration affect layout. Use the same conditions in the runs you compare.
  • Know when capture occurs: Cypress warns that a screenshot is asynchronous. In Puppeteer, likewise make the capture after your script has reached the intended state, rather than assuming the command itself freezes the app.

These are practical controls, not a promise that a particular tool will eliminate visual-test flakiness. The documentation considered here provides no comparative flakiness or rendering measurements.

Common screenshot problems and fixes

Puppeteer saves an incomplete or unexpectedly small page

Likely cause: the capture was viewport-only or the page had not reached the content state you expected. Fix: request full-page capture when appropriate, and wait for a meaningful page condition before taking the image. Full-page behavior and related controls are documented in the screenshot options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Puppeteer cannot capture the selected element

Likely cause: the selector did not resolve, or the handle became detached when the page rerendered. Fix: wait for the target selector, check that it exists, and reacquire it after DOM replacement. Element capture throws if the handle is detached. ElementHandle screenshot API

Cypress’s image does not match the instant the command ran

Likely cause: screenshot capture is asynchronous and the application changed before the image was taken. Fix: wait for the desired state, make the state stable during capture, and avoid assuming the command creates a synchronous snapshot. Cypress screenshot command

No failure screenshot appears in an interactive Cypress session

Likely cause: automatic failure capture is documented for cypress run, not cypress open. Fix: use an explicit cy.screenshot() call when you need a manual capture in either mode, or inspect artifacts from a run. Screenshots and videos guide

The screenshot exists locally but not for the team

Likely cause: the output file or Cypress screenshot folder was not retained or published by the surrounding CI workflow. Fix: configure your CI system to preserve the files your team needs. Cypress Cloud is one documented companion option for viewing and sharing run artifacts, but is not required for capture. Cypress artifact guide

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot endpoint rather than a browser test workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its capture options include full-page and element capture, device and viewport settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, waiting controls, and PDF settings. Consent-banner cleanup, popup and chat-widget removal can each be turned off; billing applies only to clean shots, while bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing. Responses identify page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents.

Use the API key from your account and make a request like this (replace the target URL as needed): ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

There is a free allowance of 1,000 shots per month with no card required. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is on every plan. If you want an API instead of managing a browser and capture artifacts yourself, sign up for ScreenshotNeo.

Which should you use?

Use Puppeteer for a browser-driving script that needs direct page or element capture and explicit output controls. Use Cypress when screenshots are part of tests and its configured capture and cypress run failure workflow suit your team. For either one, validate the actual page and CI browser conditions you intend to use; the available documentation does not establish a universal quality or speed winner.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Cypress require Cypress Cloud to take screenshots?

No. Cloud is described as a separate companion service for viewing and sharing run artifacts; screenshot capture itself does not require it.

Does the Puppeteer documentation version label mean my installed package is version 25.12.0?

No. The cited API reference displays that label, but it does not establish the version installed in your project. Check your package installation.
