A redirect alone does not explain broken images in a Puppeteer screenshot. page.goto() follows server redirects and returns the main-document response for the final destination, but that response does not tell you whether the page’s image requests succeeded. Log the final URL and status, inspect failed image requests, verify the destination page, and wait for the specific images or application state your screenshot needs.
What a redirect tells you—and what it does not
Puppeteer’s Page.goto() follows redirects. When navigation includes multiple redirects, its result is the response for the last redirect in the chain; check page.url() to see where the browser ended up. That response is for the main document, not a report on every image loaded by the page. Puppeteer’s Page.goto() documentation also notes that headless shell does not throw solely because the server returned an HTTP error such as 404 or 500, so inspect the response status.
After navigation commits, the browser parses and renders the document, runs scripts, and requests subresources such as images. An early lifecycle event such as DOMContentLoaded can happen before those resources finish. Therefore, a successful main-document response or a completed navigation does not prove the screenshot will contain every image. Chromium’s navigation documentation describes these as distinct stages.
Diagnose the destination and image requests
- Record the final navigation result. Save the response status and
page.url()afterpage.goto(). Confirm that the URL is the destination you intended, not a login page, challenge, error page, or other redirect target. - Check the page itself. Validate an expected title, selector, or other application-specific content. A successful HTTP status by itself does not establish that the intended page rendered.
- Inspect image traffic separately. Record failed requests and image response statuses. For each broken image, compare the requested URL with the intended image URL and check whether it redirects. Blocked requests, expired or host-restricted image URLs, mixed HTTP/HTTPS behavior, and access controls are possibilities to investigate—not causes that can be assumed without a trace.
- Wait for the state the capture needs. Choose a navigation condition, then check the specific image elements or page-ready state required for the screenshot. Lazy-loaded images and images inserted by application code may need a scroll or a site-specific wait.
- Validate before capture. If a required image is not usable, report that state or fail the capture rather than treating a completed main-document navigation as proof that the screenshot is ready.
Use a wait condition that matches the page
The Puppeteer screenshot guide demonstrates navigating with waitUntil: 'networkidle2' before calling page.screenshot(). It is an example, not a guarantee that every image is present: pages can lazy-load images, fetch them after application logic runs, or maintain network activity that makes a generic idle condition unsuitable.

domcontentloadedindicates the document was parsed; it may be too early for images.loadwaits for the load event, but does not establish that lazy-loaded or later application-driven images have appeared.networkidle2is the guide’s example for screenshots; use it as a navigation condition, then verify important image readiness when correctness matters.- A selector or application-specific ready signal can be more appropriate when the page exposes a reliable indication that the content you need is ready.
Log the navigation and failed requests
This diagnostic pattern records request failures and image response statuses before navigation, then reports the final destination and main-document status. Replace the URL and expected selector with values for your site.
const failedRequests = [];
const imageResponses = [];
page.on('requestfailed', request => {
failedRequests.push({
url: request.url(),
resourceType: request.resourceType(),
error: request.failure()?.errorText,
});
});
page.on('response', response => {
if (response.request().resourceType() === 'image') {
imageResponses.push({
url: response.url(),
status: response.status(),
});
}
});
const response = await page.goto('https://example.com/start', {
waitUntil: 'networkidle2',
timeout: 30_000,
});
console.log({
finalUrl: page.url(),
mainStatus: response?.status(),
failedRequests,
imageResponses,
});
// Replace this with a selector that proves the intended page rendered.
await page.waitForSelector('[data-page-ready="true"]', { timeout: 10_000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
The event logs help distinguish a failed image request from a missing or not-yet-loaded image element. If the application signals readiness before image loading completes, add a page-specific check for the images you need; there is no universal wait that guarantees all sites’ image behavior.

Troubleshoot common symptoms
- The final URL is unexpected: inspect the redirect destination and verify that it is the page your script should capture. Check expected page content rather than relying on the starting URL.
- The main response is 404 or 500, but navigation did not throw: inspect
response.status()and handle HTTP error statuses explicitly; Puppeteer documents that headless shell does not throw just because a remote server returned a valid HTTP error status. - An image request fails: use its URL, resource type, failure text, and any response status to investigate access, redirects, protocol, or request-blocking issues. These traces narrow the issue; they do not establish a cause without examining the particular site.
- Images are absent despite a quiet network: check whether they are lazy-loaded or created after application code runs. Wait for the actual target image or page-specific ready state, and use the page’s own loading behavior to determine whether scrolling or another action is needed.
- Navigation to an HTTP destination reports
net::ERR_BLOCKED_BY_CLIENT: Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide describes a Chrome for Testing behavior that can depend on version and environment, involving an HTTPS-first warning. Treat it as a branch to investigate when the redirect chain targets HTTP, not as a general explanation for broken images. See Puppeteer troubleshooting.

If you need a screenshot without maintaining Puppeteer navigation and image checks, ScreenshotNeo returns an image or PDF from a single request. Its capture flow accepts cookie/consent banners and removes known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Frequently Asked Questions
Does Puppeteer follow redirects when calling page.goto()?
Yes. It returns the main-resource response for the final redirect in the chain; use page.url() to inspect the destination.
Does networkidle2 guarantee every image is ready?
No. It is a documented screenshot-guide example, but lazy-loaded and application-driven images may require checks tailored to the page.
