Install Bengali-capable fonts in the same Ubuntu machine, VM, or container where Puppeteer launches Chromium. Start with fonts-beng, Ubuntu’s Bengali and Assamese font metapackage, then capture the page with Puppeteer’s Page.screenshot(). Installing fonts on a separate developer computer does not make them available to a browser running elsewhere.
Install Bengali fonts in the Ubuntu browser runtime
On the Ubuntu host or inside the container that runs Puppeteer, update the package index and install the Bengali font metapackage:

sudo apt-get install -y fonts-bengUbuntu’s Jammy package listing describes fonts-beng as a metapackage for Bengali and Assamese fonts and lists fonts-lohit-beng-bengali, the Lohit TrueType Bengali font, as a dependency. Package contents and versions can vary by Ubuntu release; see the Jammy package details.
When to add the extra Bengali collection
If the base fonts do not meet the page’s needs, or you want the additional collection in the image, install fonts-beng-extra too:

sudo apt-get install -y fonts-beng-extraUbuntu describes this package as TrueType fonts for Bengali. Its Noble 24.04 LTS package page recommends the Lohit Bengali package. That description does not establish that the extra collection will improve the appearance of every site or provide a particular site’s preferred typeface.
For Docker deployments
Install the packages in the image build, not just on the host that builds or deploys the image. For example, add this to an Ubuntu-based Dockerfile:

&& rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/*Add fonts-beng-extra to the install command if you need it. Rebuild the image and restart the Puppeteer runtime so the browser starts with the installed fonts.

Capture the Bengali page with Puppeteer
Once fonts are available in the browser runtime, use Puppeteer’s normal screenshot flow: navigate, wait for an appropriate page state, capture, and close the browser. This example uses a URL supplied on the command line and saves a full-page PNG:

The Puppeteer screenshot API documents Page.screenshot(); its screenshots guide shows a navigation-and-capture flow. Waiting for networkidle2 is a starting point, not a guarantee that every site-specific font or dynamic element has finished loading. Use a page-specific readiness condition when necessary.
Verify fonts and troubleshoot missing Bengali text
If the screenshot still shows tofu (empty boxes), blank characters, or unexpected fallback, check the browser environment and page before installing more packages:

- Confirm the package is in the actual runtime. A host installation will not automatically reach a container or remote browser. Check the image or machine that launches Chromium.
- Inspect the page’s CSS font request. A site may name a particular family; installing Bengali-capable fonts does not guarantee that requested family is present.
- Check whether the site’s webfont loaded. A failed or delayed webfont request can leave Chromium using a fallback even when system fonts are installed.
- Try the supplemental package only when appropriate.
fonts-beng-extraadds a Bengali TrueType collection, but Ubuntu’s package descriptions do not promise a visual result for a particular site. - Capture after the page is ready. If the page loads fonts or content asynchronously, wait for an appropriate selector or other site-specific signal before calling
screenshot(). - Check Chromium’s Linux dependencies separately. Puppeteer lists
libfontconfig1among common Debian/Ubuntu browser dependencies and notes that certain scripts may need extra font files. Its Bengali font setup is not specified there; consult Puppeteer’s Linux troubleshooting guidance.
A successful screenshot call only means a capture was produced; it does not install missing fonts or prove the page used the intended Bengali typeface or shaping.
