A blurry Puppeteer screenshot on a high-DPI screen does not, by itself, point to a Puppeteer bug. First compare the browser viewport in CSS pixels with the saved image’s actual pixel dimensions. Then verify the effective deviceScaleFactor, capture options, image format, and the Puppeteer and Chrome versions used to make the file.
1. Compare the viewport with the saved image dimensions
A viewport width and height describe CSS pixels; the screenshot file has raster dimensions measured in image pixels. They are related, but should not be assumed to match. Inspect the saved PNG’s width and height, then compare those values with the viewport you requested and the effective device scale factor. Puppeteer documents deviceScaleFactor as the device scale factor and gives it a default of 1 (Puppeteer Viewport interface).
If the image contains fewer pixels than you expected, check whether the scale factor was explicitly set and whether the output is being resized or displayed at a larger size elsewhere in your workflow. If the raster dimensions are adequate but edges still look soft, test the image format and any later resizing or display step before changing the viewport.
2. Make the viewport and scale factor explicit
Do not rely on an implicit default while diagnosing a high-DPI capture. Set the viewport before taking the screenshot, and record its width, height, and deviceScaleFactor. The value in your code is only useful if it is the value in effect for the page at capture time.

Check the dimensions of the resulting file rather than inferring them from the viewport alone. See Puppeteer’s screenshots guide and Page.screenshot() reference.
3. Check what region and options the screenshot captures
Record the options passed to Page.screenshot(), especially fullPage, clip, and captureBeyondViewport. They affect the captured region and can affect resulting dimensions, so compare like-for-like captures before attributing a difference to high-DPI rendering. fullPage: note whether the capture includes the full page or only the visible viewport.clip: record the clip rectangle and its dimensions if you use one.captureBeyondViewport: record whether it is enabled; do not assume its interaction with scaling without checking the output.
4. Separate resolution from image encoding
Save a PNG as a baseline and inspect its dimensions. Then, if your production output is JPEG and appears soft, compare the same capture as PNG and JPEG. Puppeteer’s screenshot quality option does not apply to PNG; it is relevant when using a supported lossy format. A format comparison can help isolate compression softness from insufficient raster resolution (ScreenshotOptions interface).

Also check whether an image-processing step, web page, or image viewer resizes the file after capture. A screenshot with adequate source dimensions can still look blurred when scaled to fit a display area.

5. Reduce the issue to a reproducible capture
- Record the installed Puppeteer package version and the Chrome or Chromium version it launches.
- Use one page and one URL. Set the viewport explicitly, including
deviceScaleFactor. - Make one
Page.screenshot()call, saving a PNG without unrelated processing. - Record the screenshot options, including whether
fullPage,clip, orcaptureBeyondViewportis used. - Inspect and report the output image’s width and height in pixels.
- If PNG is sharp but JPEG is soft, investigate encoding settings. If both look soft despite adequate dimensions, check how the image is being resized or displayed.
This gives you a useful basis for diagnosing the particular setup. A report about a specific issue involving captureBeyondViewport and deviceScaleFactor exists in Puppeteer issue #11514, but that report is not evidence of a general defect in current Puppeteer. Include your exact versions, options, and output dimensions when raising a bug.
