Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If a Puppeteer screenshot workflow times out, first identify the call that actually failed. Increase the timeout for navigation or the readiness wait if that is what failed; current Puppeteer screenshot documentation does not describe a timeout option for page.screenshot(). A longer navigation timeout will not, by itself, give the screenshot call a documented longer time limit.
Find which operation timed out
“Screenshot timeout” can describe several different failures. Check the error message and stack trace to see whether the rejected call was page.goto(), a wait such as page.waitForSelector(), page.screenshot(), or an outer test runner or job. The fix depends on that boundary.
page.goto()or another navigation method: adjust that navigation’s timeout or the page’s navigation default.page.waitForSelector()or another explicit wait: adjust that wait’s timeout or the relevant page default.page.screenshot()itself: the current Puppeteer screenshot API and ScreenshotOptions reference do not document a screenshot-specific timeout option.- A test, wrapper, or job limit: inspect that tool’s configuration; a Page API timeout may not control the outer limit.
The exact diagnosis can depend on your installed Puppeteer version and any wrapper in use. The current API references do not establish behavior for every older release or third-party runner.
Increase the timeout for the operation that needs it
For a slow navigation
Pass timeout to the specific navigation when only that page load needs more time. This makes the timeout’s scope clear and avoids lengthening unrelated waits.

await page.goto(url, {
waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded',
timeout: 60_000,
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });
60_000 means 60 seconds. The example uses domcontentloaded as one possible readiness condition, not a universal choice: select a waitUntil condition that matches what the capture needs. Puppeteer’s navigation timeout controls apply to methods including page.goto(), page.reload(), page.setContent(), and page.waitForNavigation(), not to page.screenshot() as documented in the current references. See setDefaultNavigationTimeout.
For a page-wide navigation default
If several navigation operations in the same page legitimately need the same budget, set a shared navigation default:

page.setDefaultNavigationTimeout(60_000);
Use this instead of repeating a per-call value when the shared scope is intentional. It changes the default for navigations, so it can also make other navigation failures take longer to surface.
For an element or readiness wait
If capture must wait for a page element, give that wait its own timeout. For example:

await page.waitForSelector('[data-ready="true"]', {
timeout: 60_000,
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });
waitForSelector() throws if the selector does not appear before its timeout. Use a selector or application-specific readiness signal that means the content you need is ready, rather than assuming that a navigation event guarantees it. The Puppeteer screenshot guide demonstrates navigation before a page screenshot and a selector wait before an element screenshot.
For a default used by waits
For waits that should share a page-level budget, Puppeteer provides page.setDefaultTimeout(milliseconds). Alternatively, set timeout on an individual wait, as above. The current wait-option documentation gives a default maximum wait of 30,000 ms; passing 0 disables that wait timeout. Disabling it can leave a wait pending indefinitely if the condition never occurs, so do so only when another reliable cancellation or job limit exists. See WaitForOptions and waitForSelector.

Choose per-call or default settings
| Setting | Scope | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
Per-operation timeout |
One navigation or wait | A single known-slow step | Requires specifying the budget at each operation that needs it. |
setDefaultNavigationTimeout() |
Navigation methods on the page | Several navigations share a timing need | Unrelated navigation failures can take longer to report. |
setDefaultTimeout() |
Page operations that use the default wait timeout | Multiple waits need the same budget | Broadens the wait budget beyond a single target operation. |
timeout: 0 |
The individual documented wait option | Only when an unbounded wait is deliberately intended and separately cancellable | The wait has no timeout of its own. |
If the screenshot call itself stalls
Do not assume that changing setDefaultTimeout() or setDefaultNavigationTimeout() changes how long page.screenshot() can run: the reviewed screenshot method and options references do not document such a control. First confirm that the stack trace points to the screenshot call rather than a preceding wait or an outer runner. Then check the installed Puppeteer version, browser and process health, page dimensions, capture settings, and any wrapper or test-runner timeout. The current official references do not establish one universal fix for a screenshot promise that itself hangs.
The screenshot options reference documents capture and output choices such as full-page capture, clipping, encoding, output path, quality, and image type; it does not document a timeout field. Review the options for your installed version before relying on a field not listed there: ScreenshotOptions.

Troubleshoot the common failure patterns
- The error names
goto: increase that call’s navigationtimeout, or usesetDefaultNavigationTimeout()if multiple navigations need a common default. Confirm that the chosenwaitUntilcondition matches the page. - The error names
waitForSelector: verify the selector exists in the rendered page and that the page can reach the expected state. Adjust the wait’stimeoutif the condition is valid but slower than the current budget. - The page loads, but the capture misses dynamic content: navigation completion may not mean the specific content is ready. Wait for an application-specific selector or readiness signal before taking the screenshot.
- The stack points to
screenshot(): do not keep increasing navigation or wait defaults as if they were screenshot limits. Inspect capture dimensions and options, browser/process health, and outer execution limits. - The timeout changes seem ineffective: verify which API call timed out and whether a wrapper or test runner owns the limit. Check the installed Puppeteer version’s documentation for its applicable options.
- You are considering
timeout: 0: for documented waits this disables the wait timeout; use it only if cancellation or a separate job limit prevents a permanently stuck workflow.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot without managing Puppeteer and a browser process, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return an image or PDF; its clean-shot workflow accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, with each step configurable.
For example, save a WebP screenshot of Stripe with cURL (replace the example URL with your target):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API parameters and setup. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
