First, separate JPEG softness from a smaller capture
Capture a PNG control and a JPEG using the same viewport, device scale factor, clip, and full-page setting. Compare the files at their native pixel dimensions—not after a viewer, content system, or messaging app has resized them.
If the PNG is crisp and the JPEG is soft at matching dimensions, JPEG encoding or its quality setting is the likely difference. If the JPEG has fewer pixels, investigate the capture dimensions or downstream resizing before tuning quality. Puppeteer documents PNG, JPEG, and WebP as screenshot formats, and its quality option applies to JPEG rather than PNG: ScreenshotOptions and ImageFormat.
Make a controlled PNG-versus-JPEG comparison
Use one page and one set of capture options. Set the type explicitly so the filename extension cannot obscure which format you requested. The example below assumes Puppeteer is already installed and page is an open Puppeteer Page.

Puppeteer documents the JPEG quality range as 0–100; choose a value deliberately and compare the resulting image. Quality has no effect on PNG output. The screenshot method returns image data as a Uint8Array by default, as shown in the Page.screenshot() API.
- Record the dimensions. Check each saved image’s actual pixel width and height with your image viewer or image-processing tool.
- Keep capture settings fixed. Do not change viewport, device scale factor, clip, or full-page behavior between captures.
- Inspect at native size. Compare matching regions without zooming one image differently or using a resized preview.
- Check the saved file. Confirm the file is actually JPEG or PNG, rather than relying on its extension alone.
Interpret what the comparison shows
PNG is sharp; JPEG is soft at the same dimensions
JPEG encoding is the likely difference. Increase the JPEG quality value and compare the result at native size. This may reduce visible compression artifacts, but it can also change the file size; Puppeteer’s documentation does not promise a particular size or visual result for a given quality number. If fine text or crisp edges matter more than compact output, keep the PNG. PNG is a useful lossless control, not a guarantee of a smaller file.

JPEG has fewer pixels than PNG
Quality is not the first thing to change. Check whether the viewport or device scale factor differs, whether a clip changed, or whether the image was resized after Puppeteer saved it. A lower pixel count can make an image appear soft when displayed at the same on-screen size.
Both images look soft
Look beyond the output encoding. The source page may itself contain low-resolution assets, or the capture may have insufficient pixel dimensions for the way it is displayed. Check the configured viewport and device scale factor, then verify that no downstream step scales or recompresses either file.

Check viewport and output-format behavior
Puppeteer’s Page.viewport() reports the viewport configured through Page.setViewport() or the connection’s default viewport; it does not inspect the actual rendered viewport. Use it to inspect configured settings, but do not treat its return value as proof of the final image’s pixel dimensions. See the Page.viewport() API.
Puppeteer defaults screenshot type to PNG. When you provide a path, it can infer the type from the filename extension. Explicitly setting type makes your intended encoding unambiguous. The supported format names are png, jpeg, and webp; WebP is another option to evaluate, but the cited API pages do not provide comparative quality or file-size benchmarks.

Troubleshoot common causes
- Quality changes do nothing: Confirm that the image is being encoded as JPEG and that you set
qualityon that capture. The option does not apply to PNG. If the image has too few pixels, fix capture dimensions instead. - The file extension and image format disagree: Set
typeexplicitly, then inspect the saved file rather than trusting its name. A path extension can influence Puppeteer’s inferred screenshot type. - The viewport check looks correct, but output still differs:
Page.viewport()reports configured settings, not the actual rendered viewport. Compare saved image dimensions and review the capture options. - The image looks different only after upload or sharing: Compare the original saved files. A later tool may resize or recompress an image; the title alone does not establish that this happened.
- Only a specific part is blurred: Compare that region in both native-size files. If it is soft in PNG too, investigate the page’s source assets or layout rather than JPEG quality alone.

What information would confirm the cause?
To narrow down a particular case, gather the Puppeteer and browser versions, the screenshot call and options, the JPEG quality value, the configured viewport and device scale factor, both files’ pixel dimensions, and whether another tool processes the images after capture. Puppeteer’s current documentation search result identifies API reference version 25.12.0; documentation and system requirements can change, so check the current system requirements for the version you use.
